NHS supplier that holds 40 million UK patient records: AWS is our new cloud-based platform

Dan 55 Silver badge

Having trouble reconciling the headline for this story with this other one:

Foreign hackers have tried to access the genetic blueprints of thousands of NHS patients, say officials

Dan 55 Silver badge

Re: Shifting patient records to the cloud requires approval from NHS Digital

NHS Digital have no say over trusts at all, they definitely have no say of GP practices, the majority of which are private businesses. As it stands it is always best to check facts before you go off on a rant.

So what are they there for then?

Dan 55 Silver badge

Re: You're stuff is going in the cloud regardless of this.

Of course. If it's not because 1) the IT dept can't make basic services work so employees have to work around the problems created by the IT dept, it's because 2) the IT dept themselves willingly outsource everything to Office 354 or 3) someone starts and has to make their mark.

The UI is actually worse than Skype for Business's, and it's everything's written in corporate matey-bollocks speak.

The voice codec is marginally better so there is that.

YouTube fight gets dirty: Kids urged to pester parents over Article 13

Dan 55 Silver badge

Youtube is nowhere near as bad as the rest of the internet, if anything it one of the tamer places.

Mexican drug cartels, ISIS beheadings, and sketchy cartoons are tame? Parents, if they do let their kids see YouTube, have to constantly fight YouTube's suggestions?

Other video platforms are available, there's nothing intrinsically special about YouTube that warrants the current free-for-all and there's a lot to get bothered about. If YouTube were closed down tomorrow, the good parts would find somewhere else.

Dan 55 Silver badge

The useful stuff is a mere drop in the ocean of shit. Just look at YouTube's front page.

Re: The "right" thing?

"We've only had one message for those who seek to push hate, division and violence," He said. "You have no place on our platforms. You have no home here."

We're living in strange times if a) this is news in the first place, b) he said it in the first place, and c) there responses calling for "anything that is not specifically illegal should be publishable".

Not every publisher should be obliged to publish Mein Kampf if they don't want to. The majority of people wouldn't even want to read it. And we wouldn't be in a good place as a society if they did.

Everyone can and should exercise discretion using common sense because extremes aren't a good thing. We seem to have forgotten that.

Microsoft: New icons, new drivers, AI! Everything is awesome!

Dan 55 Silver badge

Re: FUCK YOU MICROSOFT!!!!!!!

Apple just had the kext signing thing making hardware obsolete but even so there's a workaround.

Lately MS just can't leave drivers alone. There have been nearly as many updates to drivers since Windows 10 was launched than in the whole history of Windows since before Windows 10 (6 vs 8).

Which developer is going to keep on top of that? MS needlessly makes hardware obsolete, which is irresponsible given what we know about the environment.

AI or document search?

Microsoft continued the policy of continually updating its bread-and-butter productivity suite, Office 365, by whacking it repeatedly with an AI stick for collaboration purposes. [...] If you write to-do items (by, say, writing TODO: finish this), the word processor will automatically track them and allow writers to navigate back to the correct spot.

Has AI learnt how to jump the shark yet?

Re: I'm certain now

Of course it can. Imagine the number of hours, meetings, and so on which went into the new Office icons (there's even a damn video for them) and multiply that by everything Microsoft do.

You'd think so, but the Home Office have found the time to be the modern-day inquisition. Finding people who everyone, including the people themselves, thought they were British for decades, aren't really British, and removing them.

Shame they didn't test LibreSSL. Seems an odd one to miss out.

Off the top of my head non-C derived languages are SQL, Haskell, Python, and R. I really doubt they can cure all of IT's ills.

Or maybe you mean ADA, COBOL, FORTRAN, LISP, Smalltalk, Pascal or other legacy language which on which to build the future of IT? Sinclair BASIC?

Re: BullMerde

2. [...] There's normally no air gap between the display and outer screen, so highly unlikely this would be the cause.

Yet it's a known problem (read the thread to the end) and here is the solution (replace the display). At least with the pre-2012 iMacs you could pull the outer pane off with suckers and give both the outer pane and the display a clean, 2012+ iMac screens can't be cleaned.

4. Even with today's unrepairable laptops, it doesn't take much to take the back off and give the fans a quick blast with a can of compressed air.

Look at the video above, Louis Rossmann needed an ultrasonic cleaner to bring a MacBook board back to life. If you reply saying "yeah but corrosion", watch again - he repaired the corrosion, plugged it in at 2:56 and it was still dead, put it in the cleaner, then afterwards it powered up.

Re: @ Dabbsy

The Netherlands huffs and puffs about dual nationality, but I don't think any country would (or even could) make you renounce a nationality which is yours at birth... the only thing is you just took a while to get it officially recognised.

Dan 55 Silver badge

Re: @ Dabbsy

I think Germany want to see actual proof you've renounced your previous non-EU nationality before giving you German nationality.

So before Brexit you can have them both, after Brexit, Germany will want to see the letter from your caring sharing Home Office saying fuckity bye. However even so you can then go back to Home Office later and pay a lot of money and (hopefully) get it back again.

Meanwhile, e.g. Spain wants you to solemnly pinky promise you will renounce your previous nationality at the ceremony where you get your Spanish nationality, but doesn't do much more than that.

As for permanent residency, most EU countries allow the foreign partner to stay with their family whatever his of her income. The exception is, of course, the UK where high income threshold test is individual instead of per household and it doesn't matter if the partner is forced to leave as Skype apparently ticks the "right to family life" box.

Re: Drivers?

I've got a NUC and I knew right from the start that I wanted to put Windows 7 on it, and if not that then Windows 8.1. A Windows 7 install is not as easy as it could be as you need to get the USB 3 and SSD drivers on to the install image, but worth it because it's not a coin toss every six months as to whether the device keeps working or not.

Reverse Ferret! Forget what we told you – the iPad isn't really for work

Dan 55 Silver badge

USB support as good as Bluetooth support

I do, however, need occasionally to attach external storage over USB, something the iPad can't do

For some reason, when Apple finally does implement a connection standard for an iDevice, they nobble it in software so it probably won't do what all other devices do anyway.

And it's not as if it's difficult for iOS since they have the drivers for macOS. They just want to lock you in a bit more.
