Windows Phone 8: Everything you need to know at a glance

EddieD

Sounds great.

I have a Lumia 800, and, yes, like the other 6, I'm feeling grumpy.

Fortunately, I don't upgrade until July next year, so I'll see if I'm going to be hit by a bait and switch again.

I do like a lot of WP7.5, and I'd like to go on, but, I don't want to be screwed over again.

Re: And this is why

Not eating offal is one of the biggest calamities to hit the western diet, the foods I was brought up on (60s and 70s) are really hard to find. Stuffed lambs' hearts... mmmm....

I remember when I was in Greece visiting some friends for Easter (it's well worth visiting any country that practices Orthodox Christianity at Easter for the incredible vibe it brings), and we had the traditional roast lamb - made by getting a lamb, and roasting it an oven. Whole. I've not been looked at by any food higher up the chain than whitebait, so I was a bit non-plussed, but when my friend's husband and his father had a bit of barny about who got to scoop out the brain, I was very chuffed.

We're far too wussy about our food these days.

Although, I don't think i'll be rushing to try these recipes...

For the record, Apple want $24 per unit from Samsung for the rounded corners

What does Apple charge?

I imagine that Apple has tech that it licenses on FRAND terms - what do they charge? A dollar?

EddieD

Bit harsh

Jumping out of steel balls at 30,000+meters need balls of steel, but not huge numbers of brain cells, and, since he's taken Red Bull's shilling, he's probably shilling for them.

He expressed an opinion, which I disagree with, but as the commentator on Voltaire said "I disagree with what you said, but will fight for your right to say it". The usual comments about opinions apply :)

And besides, Red Bull is horrible stuff - I had a can once, and decided I preferred espresso.

Ahem, HAHAHAHA!

Although it has to be said, many of my fellow commentators here predicted it - I'm surprised the judge didn't.

Dr No, Thunderball, Casino Royale? Vote now for the best Bond film

EddieD

Dr No for me...

Every series needs a start, and I particularly like this - no toys, no gimmicks, no SFX, no CGI - just Bond with his wits, and his new Walther PPK (part of the time) - and a nice line in witty ripostes ("That's a Smith and Wesson, and you've had your 6" and he then goes on to mow down a technically unarmed man...).

Facebook's stock rally may be shortlived: Small advertisers enraged

EddieD

Re: More patternising

Nipping in before the inevitable replies, I hope.

Of course, there is one way to stop spilling out my information - don't use Facebook. I would, but, like when I didn't have a mobile 12 years ago, I wouldn't get any invites to rot my liver and generally act 30 years younger than my real age, so I have to try and find an acceptable compromise

EddieD

More patternising

You'll see updates from your "liked" pages, if you add them to your interests - thus confirming your continued interest and adding a datum to your file to be flogged to the advertisers.

<shrug> Adblock, a couple of Userscripts and a hosts file that mainly points to 127.0.0.1 stops the adverts. Obviously it doesn't stop me haemorraghing information to them, so it's a pyrrhic victory.

No GPS in the iPad Mini Wi-Fi: People are right to criticise

EddieD

Re: Adding to the list...

That's one way you can look at it.

I prefer to say that it can do all that I want, and a lot more than I need, and it has offline gps and mapping.

Which both work, unlike some "finished" oses.

EddieD

Adding to the list...

My Lumia is perfectly happy navigating me around Greece, and I most certainly turn every form of data connection off when I'm abroad - with UK, Europe and ,for no other reason than "see what I can do" Texas maps loaded - I think they take up about 3 gigs of space...

Bond as a Scotsman was retconned into the canon by Fleming after he saw Connery in Dr No - before that, Bond's nationality was not mentioned.

Aye, indeed.

I've only seen OHMSS once, but it's stuck in my mind more than most (that might have been Diana Rigg though).

It's a shame Lazenby only got to reprise his rôle in "The Return of the Man from UNCLE".

The hoarder's dilemma, or 'Why can't I throw anything away?'

None left here

A few weeks ago, I took my box of assorted bits to work, added them to the pile waiting for the secure recycling van, and went to my office.

And I don't regret a thing - the only spares I have now are a few SATA drives, a few cables - usb, firewire, displayport - and that's it.

I have a large amount of space in my attic, and I'm wondering what /new/ crap I can fill it with.

Iffy image said to signify incoming 10in Google tablet

EddieD

Calibration chart, surely?

It's measured in CMY values, and if so, hardly pointless, if you're calibrating new imaging sofware, for, say, a new imaging platform with a 5MP camera.

Admittedly though, you are correct, EXIF data is somewhat easy to forge.

Microsoft sues Google directly in German Maps-on-Moto lawsuit

EddieD

Re: Google Lawyer Representing Moto

Much as I hate patent lawsuits, maybe it's better to be going after the organ grinder and leave the monkeys alone.

Google have been insulated from most of the lawsuits involving Android and IP, which is a bit wrong, imo. They have designed the underlying O/S, but their name is not on the box, so they seem to be Teflon.

Obviously, this doesn't apply to arguments involving rectangles with rounded corners, 'cos they're just pants.

Re: Stick his tweets up his butt.

http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/the-staggers/2011/11/tax-avoidance-justice-network

2 year old figures have 70bn - the figure I used was introduced by Mark Serwotka and was not challenged by anyone else - not even the tory - on any questions on Saturday.

It's still available on iPlayer.

EddieD

Re: Stick his tweets up his butt.

As was pointed out this weekend - benefit fraud costs 1bn, tax avoidance/evasion, well, doesn't cost, but there are revenues in excess of 100bn going astray, which is approximately inverse to the amount of money spent chasing them respectively
