Half of all app store revenue goes to just 25 developers

EddieD

Aye, the <insert number> of apps we have...

And how many different apps is that?

700,000 unique and different apps, or 7000 apps with 100 different skins? Or even 100 apps and 7000 skins?.

Even on the Windows Phone marketplace (yeah, okay...) which has considerably fewer (look it up for yourselves...) most apps are duplicated.

Re: Odd.

Absolutely - rock used to have dynamic range, now it's compressed to hell and back.

Shame.

EddieD

Odd.

Now, don't get me wrong, back in the tail end of the seventies, I would be found in Derby County Hall and Leicester De Montfort giving it laldy for Lemmy, Eddie and Phil - I still have the albums (and the CDs) and I loved them.

Now you see, brilliant though the boys were, the production job on the first 4 or 5 albums wasn't. These headphones are acoustically stonking - but will it show up the potholes in Keep us on the Road? Will Stay Clean sound dirty? Will they show that the engineer had No Class?

You see, the only way to feel the noise, is when it's good and loud.

Audio clarity is optional.

Help-desk hell

EddieD

Corny, unoriginal, but true

I used to work for a charity giving computer training (word processing, spreadsheets and the like) to special needs groups. We had both a wee "school" where a friend and I managed to blag a Netware3 license from the Uni and we set up a small "Office" network, but also an outreach program, where housebound individuals were given a PC, they were given worksheets, one of our Tutor/Befrienders would spend a couple of hours a week with them, and they submitted their work on 3.5 floppy disks (remember them :) which were collected by our drivers.

One day, one of the folk on the outreach program rang and said that she couldn't save anything, her PC wasn't working. I asked a few questions, but it was quite clear that she wasn't able to really help, so I asked Henry, our driver to collect it and bring to the office so I could look at it.

As soon as it arrived, I put it on the desk, and without even switching it on, I knew the problem - when I put it down, it sounded like a money box. I opened the machine, took out the floppy drive and shook it - a shower of coins fell out. I rang the lass concerned, and asked if her baby was now mobile. She said yes, it's lovely. I said, aye, it is - he thinks the floppy drive is his money box...and that's why you couldn't save anything. She asked me then how the machine was......

"Well, there's no change yet", was my reply.

Sorry.

Oi, Apple, stick to phones, forget about TV - Time Warner CEO

EddieD

Apple TV is not really necessary

TV providers have managed the transition from scheduled content delivered to the device far better than music providers - digital TV services have allowed recording, rescheduling, automatic series following and the like for a long time, services like 4OD allow you to get access to earlier stuff very easily (and freely, adverts notwithstanding...) - the Music industry took an age to do similar, and it took iTunes or Spotify - third parties - to really make it mainstream.

The TV industry already occupies the niche that Apple would want to occupy, and already has the capacity to monetise delivery to the device - they have absolutely no need to pay the Cupertino tax, and will just smile sweetly and make cutting jibes when Apple says that the iTV service will be available real soon now...just with very little content.

Re: Is this an Autobot or Decepticon Transgender

I heard a similar story about a company near hear - a worker announced that they were starting their year as the opposite gender, whereupon staff of both genders refused them access to the gender specific toilets, and they ended up having to use the disabled toilets.

I was absolutely horrified - the company involved was a tech company, entirely staffed by high achieving, highly motivated, and above all, highly educated people, who turned out to be as bigotted as the the lower aspects of the red-top press.

Nokia Lumia 820 WinPho 8 review

EddieD

Too little, too late

The future is Android - certainly on mobile.

Lumia phones are nice (I have one) - the HTCs running WP8 are nice. Their all nice.

Unfortunately, they have no market traction, and I haven't seen anything that indicates that they're likely to gain market traction.

That they still haven't announced anything to do with the promised "WP7.8" update shows their commitment to early adopters, and anyone contemplating making the switch will be looking at that.

All in all, not good.

HTC share zoom prior to Apple peace pact under investigation

EddieD

Not so good, really

As Groklaw points out, HTC are being double-teamed by a combination of Microsoft and Apple - I think the figures being quoted there are about $8+ per device to each of Microsoft and Apple. By the time this has worked its way through the supply chain, it could easily make HTC android devices uncompetetive in the open market, which is definitely not good.

Samsung turns screws on Apple, hikes A6 processor price 20%

EddieD

Re: I wonder..

In the next few years...

In that time, other markets will probably be more relevant than Apple - remember, they've shrunk to less than 20% of the smartphone market, it probably won't be too long until they're in the same place on tablets. In the meantime, Samsung are raking in the wonga, both for the chips, and the most popular smartphones (outselling Apple 2:1 this last quarter).

I think Samsung's timing could be exquisite.

And, yes, schadenfreude. I do love schadenfreude.

BBC places news chief and her deputy beyond use in Savile row

EddieD

It's a bit of a bugger.

Whilst I'm fully in favour of kicking lots of arses over some recent failings, under no circumstances must this be used as leverage to neuter the BBC, as I think the current coalition would like.

Compared to most public broadcasters, the BBC is in a league of its own, and anything at all that dims one of the few shining lights that the UK has would be a very, very grave mistake.

This government is making mistakes, as is apparent by the sheer number of U turns that Cameron has made recently (e.g. fuel pricing...). People do make mistakes. It's allowing them to make amends - visible and genuine amends - that is important, and ensuring that the failing procedures are changed.

But - as is all too common with government edicts fuelled by the baying press - we must not harass an organisation into making more and more errors, or throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Change, yes - where necessary. In a mature and reasoned environment.

The BBC is important to Britain to allow a couple of - in the great scheme of things - minor mistakes lead to its downfall.

(I'll get off my soapbox now...)

One in four don't clean their stinky old browsers - especially Firefoxers

EddieD

That's me, that is..

After firefox moved to the update every few hours or so model, it became not unusual for me to have to spend half an hour re-configuring things like my mouse (zoom buttons, forward/backward buttons, etc - I have slight impairment of my right hand function following a bike accident, so such things are important for my ease of use) - and possibly my add-ons, but I suppose it shouldn't be a surprise that they don't work if the browser engine has been updated, but it's still a hiccup. Mouse functions though, should not be affected.

Upgrading should be seamless, and if it isn't folk are going to be reluctant to move from something that is working well, to something that doesn't work well any more.

Bird of Prey: 1980s IT on on the small screen

Re: Compulsive viewing for me...

I've just spotted he's using an Apple II...now, there's a blast from the past. Same machine as my school used (okay, we had a zx81, but no-one used that) to teach us computers. Very, very badly. It was though, 1980 or so, and no-one really knew too much about how to use a micro computer (we did more work on the big machines at the local university...which still had teletypes, not monitors).

EddieD

Aye, they're crap.

Although, probably no more than the rest...

All my family are on O2, so, so am I. Reluctantly.

The app on my phone that they wrote to monitor my network usage still doesn't work, and this is after 8months of complaints, and I've yet to be able to send one of my "free" picture messages I pay for in my allowance (and that's after 5 visits to the shop. Well, one of them anyway. There are several very shiny ones on Princes Street), and the coverage in Scotland seems to be rather more restricted than the others - certainly outside the ring road round Edinburgh I get no G/E/3G or, heaven forbid, H, access, so I've had dust off my music player. Fortunately my maps work offline (that last work is partially redundant).

My friends all complain about their networks though, so I think it's a matter of choosing which set of fleas you get.
