The perils of building a career on YouTube: Guitar teacher's channel nearly deleted after music publisher complains
Why should the UK pensions watchdog be able to spy on your internet activities? Same reason as the Environment Agency and many more
Google, Microsoft & Facebook etc is ok but the Govmt isn't?
Windows 10 has a keylogger etc built in as standard, Google knows where everyone is and who they are with and what their emails contain, Facebook, well goodness only knows what data they slurp from mobile phones, including all phone contacts. Same with a lot of other online companies. Most people don't realise this, or don't care or don't know enough to stop the data gathering. Yet when the Government wants a little bit of info for national security reasons, everyone is up in arms about it?
No, I don't support the government doing this but then unlike most people I'll never have any social media apps etc on MY phone (which has a custom ROM). And I'll never infect MY computer with Windows 10 either !
GIMP open source image editor forked to fix 'problematic' name
Re: Eh?
Ahh, thanks. I'm in the UK and have never heard of GIMP being used as an insult. Mind you I do lead a sheltered life. Also this is the first time I've heard of the phrase "Abelist Insult". One learns something new every day, but I didn't expect to learn so much before my first coffee of the day!
Can't bear to part with that well-worn copy of Windows 7? Microsoft might let you keep it updated an extra year
Re: Good. Another year for people to move away from Windows
I'm sorry but this is a load of rubbish. My Win XP PC is connected to the outside world and is still running as fast as ever and the applications are all working fine thank you. (I need to use some very old hardware & software that will not run on anything newer than XP). My Network, of course, is properly firewalled, as everyone's should be.
My Windows 7 connected PC is, and will continue to, work perfectly well next year, next decade. Hashtag Never10
Microsoft: New icons, new drivers, AI! Everything is awesome!

"I teach physics, and one common GCSE question is "What is the mains voltage?" The "correct" answer is 230V, if you write 240V you'll lose the mark."
Tell that to Northern Powergen. When they retired our original 1954 single phase 25kVa pole mounted 400v to 250v step-down transformer back in 2014 they replaced it with a 100kVa three phase (only 2 phases in use) step down transformer and used the normal tap (250v). So for me up here in Northumberland, the correct answer is 250v (presently reading 242v as it's 6pm and all the neighbours are making tea.
Scrapheap challenge: How Amazon and Google are dumbing down the gogglebox
Re: Now you need a TV license, a SKY sub, Amazon Prime, Netflix, BT, etc ad-bleedin-nauseum
It's not often an el Reg article goes totally over the top of my head, but this one has. I had to Google Roku, Fire Tv, Chromecast etc. I've never had a smart Tv, heck I've not had a Tv for many years. As for streaming services such as Netflix or Amazon, forget it, I live in a not spot. I've got a 27 inch Dell monitor hooked up my computer with a 10m DVI cable. When I hear about a Tv series or film that may interest me (not often), I download the torrent and watch at my leisure. But then I live on my own, it makes life a lot easier.
Apple Pay's Brit biz bashed by banks planning to Zapp it out
Re: Cash..... and cheque!
I pay the Coal man by cheque (he won't accept anything else), the firewood is also paid by cheque, and the pub only takes cash. The local shop takes credit and debit cards but you have to pay 50p extra for the privilege due to the banks charging them.
I suspect when I get my new debit card at the end of this year it will sadly be NFC enabled, and I'll investigate where to drill a hole in it to disable the aerial.
Not everyone lives in London, not everyone uses Public Transport (there isn't any where I live, and yes, I do live in the UK), and not everyone buys those disgusting overpriced 'Barista' coffees tasting of mud. As for my phone, I'm likely to forget to take it with me when I go out. Unlike most people these days, I don't see the need to be plugged in 24/7. Not that I would be if I took it with me, around here we're lucky if we get a 2G signal let alone mobile data.

"So I went to palemoon which is more or less firefox without the UI changes for Australis, and everything works fine."
I'd recommend Pale Moon to any Firefox user who is fed up with it. Pale Moon totally disagrees with the UI changes that Firefox have made, and it also doesn't have a manic release cycle which breaks add-ons.

Lack of knowledge is no excuse.
You don't have to know anything about car mechanics to realise that when it starts making a strange noise, something is wrong, so you go get advice, go to a garage etc. And anyway, any car owner who doesn't know how to check the fluid levels, tyre pressures or change a tyre or bulbs SHOULDN'T be driving.
Same with computers. Knowing nothing about how they work isn't an excuse. Anyone with even a fraction of a brain between their ears knows to be suspicious of emails especially from someone you've never heard of who asks you to click on a link! And people who don't keep their software upto date, don't use anti-virus/anti-malware/browser security plug-ins and don't scan downloads before opening them SHOULDN'T be using a computer.
eBay revenue shrivel hits nine month mark
Considering the present economic climate . .
. . . where people are cutting back on buying new and second hand / thrift shops are recording bumper profits, Ebay should be raking it in. To make a loss in this climate from such a business just shows how spectacularly incompetent the management are, and how many of their customers have left in droves.
Very sad.
Microsoft to bomb Europe with IE-free Windows 7
Crazy . . .
. . . and stupid. MS only need one version, and three questions in the setup:
1. Are you a business or home user?
2. Do you want to install Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer and all the other crap we bundle for free in our OS?
3. If you answered no to question2, please choose which of the following you wish to install:
[Insert list of browsers, media players and other cool non MS stuff]
Now what's so difficult with that?
