US Senate stamps the gas pedal on law to flood America's streets with self-driving cars

Re: A dangerous hands-off approach to hands-free driving

It would be quite interesting - yes. And considering those long distances are all highway, autonomous niceness. Lethalness shinkage ripeness.

Per capita is still quite important as a pointless funerals per family measure.

Re: Gigabit not needed, what a load of crap!

And while Gig may not be necessary, with our fibre to the premises over here, it's just a matter of turning the tap.

Which some ISPs are already doing.

Which is nice.

Apple's HTML5 bet against Android extermination

Mikey 1
WTF?

I don't understand

Your reference on the iPhone losing its 'pole position' goes on to suggest that more are using their phones as smartphones than Android users, Ok actually that supports your html5 contention.

Two of you references are to your own articles, humbly noted.

Your point on cost cutting is a little disingenuous. Yes, they are making use of confirmed and established manufacturing processes and continue to sell the model from last year as well as the year before, enabling these models to be sold more cheaply. Both of which can make use of the current generation of software, entirely at the discretion of the end user, not the carrier they purchased it from.

From the Christensen article you start with, I quite like Horace's response to his comparison to Sony, Apple is not afraid to deprecate, or move on. A stalled desktop refresh and taking in its stride the falling music player sales suggests they already have.

I would like to offer that the current closed architecture follows on from that. And the encouragement and support of HTML5, and webkit just quietly, supports that. It's appropriate, for now.

iOS itself and the iPhone displays this. Yes, 5 years ago the principle was web apps only. This didn't last, and the resulting growth from both sides, dev and os, is delightful.

First and foremost, they are a hardware company. And where it's appropriate, quite open as with firewire. And willing to deprecate, as with removable media, cpu architecture, or firewire. The foundations of the os and the browser are open. Perhaps more of the software will become open also as it is seen fit to do so.

Don't get me wrong, I'm as much for and against as you are, actually the only bit that really stuck in my craw was when you said "over the long haul openness generally wins."

It's proving to be quite a long haul as the behaviour of all parties involved appears to confirm each is in it for their own.

But why?

They've already got me.com. Ok, no the pun wasn't intended.

Even so, millions on a domain that is less memorable. For something that extends what mobileme is about?

The narcissism of minor differences

Thanks stackoverflow for the Freud:

"It is clearly not easy for man to give up the satisfaction of this inclination to aggression. They do not feel comfortable without it. The advantage which a comparatively small cultural group offers of allowing this instinct an outlet in the form of hostility against intruders is not to be despised. It is always possible to bind together a considerable number of people in love, so long as there are other people left over to receive the manifestations of their aggressiveness. I once discussed the phenomenon that is precisely communities with adjoining territories, and related to each other in other ways as well, who are engaged in constant feuds and in ridiculing each other — like the Spaniards and Portuguese, for instance, the North Germans and South Germans, the English and Scotch, and so on. I gave this phenomenon the name of “the narcissism of minor differences”, a name which does not do much to explain it. We can now see that it is a convenient and relatively harmless satisfaction of the inclination to aggression, by means of which cohesion between the members of the community is made easier."

Windows 7 Backup gets users' backs up

I was pleasantly surprised

Having previously always used third party backup applications myself.

I had never quite got around to sorting out my old man until Time Machine in Snow Leopard. A while after upgrading dad's wee 4 year old Macbook from 10.4 to 10.6, his hard drive failed. I reinstalled the OS on a new drive (and bigger, hey why not), and with some trepidation clicked 'Restore from Time Machine backup'.

Fancy that, he said, it looks just like the old one. Which it did.

This may of course have as much to do with the migration assistant as TimeMachine itself. My own upgrade to Snow Leopard from Leopard was a fresh install on a new hard drive with the old Tiger drive in a USB external case. Again with some caution I used the migration assistant after installation and lo and behold essentially all that changed was my wallpaper, and a few apps such as CyberDuck wouldn't work (which I was aware of).

I've not had a terribly longtime with the MacOS X, a few years, but moving to a new machine or hard drive and not having to install a dozen third party applications all over again was rather pleasant.

And yes, I'm fully aware some suffer with this Jobsian OS as much as any other OS. The early Leopard point releases were especially tiresome by all accounts.

Adobe to Jobs: 'What the Flash do you know?'

Mikey 1

Child processes

I've seen Safari play nicely like that on occaision - a nice blank space on the page and a wee message along the lines of "Flash was hurting me, so I kicked him out." - just in the latest or so version I think.

I've also seen it crash Safari so there you go.

As it is, in SnowLeopard, Flash runs as a seperate 32bit process alongside the 64bit Safari, because as with Windows 64bit - it's all a bit much for Adobe.

Meanwhile, there's ClickToFlash. :-)

count me in

It may be a little early to have started playing in the Snow for you?

The first few dots on the Leopard where also rather frustrating though by the time it got to 10.5.8 it was lovely.

Yes, I've been left a little wanting with this one, it's growing up nicely however, now it's 3 months in with the .2 fur on it.

Seems the trend continues for MacOSX - if it brings in the foldable for you, hang on until a .3 or .4 before upgrading. - oh, well unless you just bought a new machine that is.

Nah, they deferred revenue not cost. Sold a whole bunch of Win7 early to the OEMs to make for a nice release day and the profit will show up next quarter.

Either way, shucks. Big numbers.
