Chevrolets to get 'Eyes Free' mode for driving with Apple Siri

Ryan 7
Thumb Down

"It will of course be only available to those with Siri-enabled phones - iPhone 4S and 5."

And of course it will never get any updates, meaning that only two of the features will ever work properly, you'll be forced to choose whether to upgrade your iOS or keep it compatible with your car, and it will never work at all with iPhone 6+.

Embedding tech in cars is incredibly short-sighted. Surely the industry would make more money (by selling far more of the option kits) by standardising on a set of steering-wheel multifunction buttons and a little 2-line display, offloading the actual functionality to any handset? Where's the Bluetooth profile for that?

Is there any Titanium up there?

I can see the Aircraft, Rolling Stock, and Automobile industries switching all construction over to Titanium given enough of a supply - which would keep prices at a decent level even with gigatonnes of the stuff.

Qwerty keyboards

Ryan 7
Boffin

I've been holding out for a Nokia WP7 with a QWERTY keyboard

There have been a few rumours that one it in the works, but my Xperia X1 is getting very poorly. The display dies if I slide its keyboard out, and the mic doesn't work so it's Bluetooth-only for calling. Not only that but the registration on the touchscreen drifts about from day-to-day.

I'm already unhappy with not being able to replace it with a resistive-screen model, c'mon Nokia, pull your finger out! I don't trust LG, or Dell to make a decent phone, nor HTC after this X1 got AIDS, and no-one else makes a Windows Phone with a keyboard!

Nanodot memory smashes RAM, sets new speed record

How are they steering the laser?

Surely using a parallel beam and a DLP chip, or similar, would bring it back to conventional speeds. If they're using a perpendicular beam, well, that sounds complex, bulky, and expensive.
