Fukushima update: No chance cooling fuel can breach vessels

Thomas 4
Boffin

I wouldn't mind getting this clarified myself

I've been looking through a few wikipedia articles on nuclear power and radiation and I must have seen at least half a dozen units for measuring radition intensity. Would someone be kind enough to enlighten me as to the current estimated level and how much is need for significant health problems or (God forbid) a fatal amount?

Fukushima reactor core battle continues

Thomas 4

Same here

Had a read of that article yesterday myself. Being honest I found a lot of it hard to follow but from what I've been able to understand the Fukushima reactor and the Chernobyl reactors are very different beasties.

As for the whole nuclear debate, is *now* really the right time, when people are risking their lives trying to bring the reactors under control?

One worrying thought occurs

If this is in fact tied to the earthquake last week, would it herald further eruptions from other Japansese volcanoes?

Threat to third Fukushima nuke reactor

Thomas 4

Something I only just found out

I had a look on Google maps for the location of Fukushima - people do know these things were built on the coastline right? I'd like to see any building survive a 9.0 megaquake *and* a 33ft tsunami and escape without massive damage. It's also worth remembering that these reactors were of a much older design than some of the ones we have in the UK and that retooling a full installed and functioning reactor with the latest safety features is not an undertaking to be done quickly.

Oh do lighten up, please. It's friday o'clock, I have a really long clinic ahead of me and anything that is good for a brief smile or a laugh helps time travel more quickly.

Now if I could just find a memory erasing device that can erase the last 2 minutes I've wasted reading and replying to your post, that'd be swell.

Sony to sell PSN content over the counter

Thomas 4
Coat

Wait, what?

When did PSN have content on it instead of piles of meaningless crap? As a UK based PSP owner, I get about a tenth of the content that the American PSN store enjoys. Given that a large number of game stores in the UK have axed their PSP section entirely, I can't see them falling over themselves to sign up for this.

Mines the one with the content bereft PSP in the pocket.

HP to put a WebOS in every PC

Thomas 4

Sounds interesting

My IT skills are a little fuzzy when it comes to embedded platforms, etc - does this mean a HP lappy could dual boot between Windows and WebOS? That could be really fun for trying it out with the questionable safety net of Win 7 as back up.

Solution found for climate change: Nuclear war

Thomas 4

What's really terrifying?

The fact that someone managed to build and detonate a 50MT nuclear weapon - that stuff at the bottom of the article along with wikipedia details on the Tsar Bomba? That's nightmare fuel, especially when you think that it only had half of its intended yield of 100MT.

Ten... fantasy swords you wish you owned

Thomas 4

Two more from me

I actually own a replica of Sting from Lord of The Rings, made by the same guys that do the others. It's beautifully engraved and I'm told it glows when goblins approach. As I live in a goblin free area though I haven't had a chance to see it in action yet.

Would also give someone's right arm for a Soul Reaver from the Legacy of Kain series.

iPhone to whup Sony PSP 2

Thomas 4

He may have a point

Speaking as a current PSP owner, I've noticed it's becoming harder to find shops that still sell PSP titles. My local Game and Gamestation have axed their sections and the UK version of Sony's PlayStation Online store reduces me to rage at it's pathetic range of titles, compared to the US or Japan.

It's also worth reminding ourselves that Sony tried to compete head on with the iPhone and iPod Touch in the form of the PSPGo, which due to the abysmal store, as mentioned above, tanked massively.

Will the NGP have more success? Maybe initially but with the iOS devices, not to mention the 3DS, Sony really can't afford to fuck this up.

Portsmouth redefines the Olympic-sized swimming pool

Thomas 4

Vulcanistic Pachydermic Calculations

1000m3 = 217 Elephants * 180 = 180,000 m3 or 39060 Elephants

That's the easy stuff out of the way, now comes the crunch:

2 inches = 5.08 cm or 0.058m

50 - 0.058 = 49.942m x 25m x 2.88m = 3595.824 m3

Now, drawing on info from the first pachyderm conversion article = 100 m3 = 21 elephants, meaning each elephant has a volume of 4.76 m3.

This shocking info reveals that by shaving a mere 2 inches off an Olympic swimming pool, Portsmouth are depriving their swimmers of almost an entire elephant. Disgusting.

Seconding the first use of the verb "to assange"

* Braid

* Shadow of the Colossus

* Minecraft

Wanna puff the Old Republic? Only if you do it for free

Thomas 4

Agreed

Warhammer had so much potential as a rock solid PVP MMO. Where they went wrong, aside from hiring Mark "63 Servers" Jacobs, was refusing to listen to the fanbase and being very slow to patch. Problems remained problems for an extremely long time and with the players spread over so many servers, finding regular PVP proved impossible for many people.

We'll see whether SW:TOR does things differently but I'm going to take anything EA/Bioware say with a very large pinch of salt.

A film huh.....

I liked the climactic finale where the birds launched themselves at the big evil parrot. I was less impressed when they missed and the sequence was repeated 64 times until they hit.

PlayStation Phone spied in China

Thomas 4

Hmmm, dunno about this.

Sony has a spotty record when it comes to online content. I doubt these things will be able to run PSOne games and PSP titles and it's doubtful they could persuade enough developers to code specifically to take advantage of the Experia's unique controls. Don't get me wrong, a decent game-playing control system on a phone is a great idea - I'm just pessimistic about Sony's ability to deliver decent content. After all, look at the PSP Go and how badly that tanked. I'm still waiting for them to cough up PSOne games that are available in the US to their UK store.

Amazon: 'iPad LCD tablets no threat to Kindle'

Thomas 4

Agreed

I received a Kindle for Christmas like a few other people but it's not my first encounter with ebooks. A few years back I had a Tungsten T5 floating around and found an ebook program for it and a few ebooks. I found that due to the screen I found it hard to concentrate on what I was reading due to the small screen size and the backlight seemed to wear on my eyes after a while. It's only been a little while but I've worked my way through The Picture of Dorian Gray and Dracula and found them to be a lot more "comfortable" to read than on my Palm.
