Swarm tractors

The reason why modern tractors are so big and heavy and expensive is largely due to the economics of having a driver in the bloody thing. Without having a driver in it you can reduce it to small possibly even wind/solar powered/assisted machines - you dont need to plough weeds under if you can send out a cheap machine that costs the good side of £1k and can wander up an down the rows autonomously zapping the weeds so they can never get going and need ploughing in later.

More importantly these tools can be mass produced to an open standard so, like my old grey fergie, I dont get screwed by JD for a JD special attachment that only fits my JD and cant be lent, borrowed or shared to people with people with different brand machines.

Oh, the things Vim could teach Silicon Valley's code slingers

Re: Stone age tools

its been an age since I used a 'text' editor for anything longer than about twenty lines of code. I think it was partly down to using reasonable IDEs but more importantly 'loosing' the one editor to rule them all approach. Most of the convenient and easy to use keystrokes have been upgraded to 'macros' that work outside the editor. I barely write much code these days - other than when playing at learning something new. Once I've learnt what I need to do I tend to build the code that builds the code for me - using simple stone age techniques generally. Nothing like a flint axe for cutting through the misswired cables someone has shoved into the wrong conduit in your 747 or skyscraper. IntelliJ is just a collection of stone age tools after all.

Re: I'm not surprised most commenters against Unicode are anglophones

The last company I did any international language coding for the first thing I did was to write a DB for all the user interface text and a tool to allow whichever country was in control of their language interface to put their own translations of the english versions in. Even better they got to be in charge of their own CSS which I'd insisted on since the english master version had been working for nearly two years while the advertising department flip-flopped on colours fonts and images. Its amazing how easy coding is when you can fuck off this sort of random noise and penis waving from the design process. Give people ownership of their part of the process and the means to ensure you cant be to blame and they dont spend their lives trying to fuck you up.

That would require someone in HR who has event the faintest idea about how to do more than turn on the PC and ring the support desk, or more amusingly paying someone for about 3 years after you've fired them.

Re: Cool effects and animations

Having worked on accessibility I think I can safely say that any cool effect and animation is just a pain in the arse. Its quite surprising how effective simple vanilla no frills shit is! If you want to make your web site accessible then this is what you start with. When you have that working you find that, guess what, it is more than sufficient for everyone else. You only need cool effects and animations to keep them busy while you try and do what you should have been doing in the first place.

Why the UK is unlikely to get an adequacy determination post Brexit

Tom 7

Re: Hard cases

The reason why we have trouble deporting criminals is due to the incompetent Home Secretary we had at the time who couldn't even get dates right on documents. Some oaf call May IIRC.

And ISTR other countries went to the EU court and asked if they could deport criminals and the court said 'yeh sure'. Its only in the UK we can make something simple into someone else's problem to such a level and not invent intergalactic travel. Don't expect that to improve either way.

Could YOU survive a zombie apocalypse? Uni eggheads say you'd last just 100 days

Tom 7

Re: UK - Zombies Win. USA - Zombies LOSE

I think I should point out that your thesis requires that good people with guns kill bad people with guns (or even zombies without guns) the evidence for this is lacking to say the least.

I'd imagine within hours of the zombie warnings going out armed militias would have machine gunned anything moving and provided any zombies with so much easy to access braaaaaaaaaaaaiiiin food they would be overwhelmed.

Re: DAB+ DrXym

Its more a question of replacing 4K full colour TV with 4K full colour TV with seriously reduced reception and usability cos 'new is better even if it really isn't'

Tom 7

Re: DAB+

I think there are two major problems with DAB (possibly DAB+ too but I cant be arsed to check):

Changing channel. I only listen to one channel but when the kids come and change channel it seems to take forever - a good couple of seconds so its easy to miss a lot of a program trying to find the bastard. The display knows what's coming but the decoder is still trying to work out what the fuck to do with the KW its consuming.

Reception. Coverage is unbelievably shit down our way - Devon with lots of hills and valleys and while they may work for a tv aerial and booster its absolutely no good for an indoor reception in new houses - let alone cob walled buggers like mine.

Should they ever drop fm here I shall probably see if I can make raspberryPi zeros into internet radio reception devices to put into all my current FM devices - at least I wont have to redecorate the house to suit the 'well it looked good on a duke box in 1950' designs cluttering up the shops.
