HTML5 unfit for web TV, says Hulu

Tom 35

Wrong type of secure

"It must also secure the content - https and a certificate"

No they are control freaks (Hulu and the content providers) they are talking about securing the customers... DRM, and Flash has DRM and the are adding more DRM to the next version to keep the control freaks happy.

Water in a vacuum

You can't have water in a vacuum, it would boil. Same for a 33' column of water, it would boil.

Atmospheric pressure is an important part of the process, it keeps the liquid from boiling.

Don't forget Quicktime

I run iTunes on my older computer that I used for web stuff. An AMD 2500+ @2GHz with 2 GB RAM.

iTunes can't play a video, I get a few seconds of slide show followed by frozen video (sound keeps playing), but the same file plays fine with other players (at ~20% CPU). This is a 480x272 file, and if my iPod can play it whey can't iTunes running at 2 GHz?

Ok, who came up with the conversion... about 60,000 Kelvin, or 107,540 F?

It's ABOUT 60,000 (I expect the original said 6x10^4) you can only say something like ABOUT 100,000 as you don't know the temp to the nearest 10 degrees.

Johnson: ID cards will pay for themselves

Tom 35

charging the public for the cards...

The cards will pay for themselves? Is he daft? The public will pay for the cards, taxes, fees, or paying for a card... it's all the same thing. The money is coming out of the public's pocket, the cards don't pay anything!

The only way the cards could pay for themselves would be if they saved as much money in other areas as they cost, and there is NO chance of that.

Will IE _ever_ support VP8?

IE doesn't support Flash. You have to install a bloated buggy plug-in to use flash.

So even if IE has no built in support for VP8 that should be no more of a problem then flash support, just create a plug-in.

Apple rumored to put beefy iPad on diet

Tom 35

Not a phone

Why do people keep calling the ipad a big iphone? It's not even a phone!

It's a big ipod touch.

I use a normal dumb phone to make calls, runs for about a week on a charge.

I have a jail broken touch for media, portable computer, info store...

For me a bigger ipod that still fits in my pocket would be great, the ipad is just too big for what I use the ipod for.

Tom 35
Thumb Down

Usless bloat

If adobe didn't stuff the PDF file format with embedded crap like video we would not have this crap. But then no one would need to spend $150 on an upgrade every year if they didn't keep putting more and more crap into the format (I'm still using V6, nothing in v9 I want).

PDF should just be an electronic version of what you would put on a piece of paper. It should not be an interactive, multimedia, dog and pony show. If I wanted to do that I'd email my invoice to customers in Flash format :P

Mandy quango says Apple, Amazon are too obscure

Tom 35
FAIL

Carving up the world

"Furthermore, please _PLEASE_ sort out the cross-country licencing balls."

Why is it like that? The record labels (and movie studios) like it like that. You talk to them and they say it's because of the licence... like it's some natural law or something, well just who wrote the licence?

I live in Canada. There are no MP3s on Amazon.ca. iTunes.ca is quite limited compared to some other countries. But I can (and have) order CDs and DVDs from amazon.com, co.uk, co.jp with no problem.

What about people who live in smaller countries? Is there an iTunes or amazon mp3 store for island? How about immigrants? My co-workers looking for some music from back home don't have much luck on iTunes.ca and can't use the iTunes store from their home country... so they torrent.

So if the stupid control freak studios want people to pay for music, they should stop putting up walls and let the people who are willing to pay for music pay.

Microsoft talks up Windows 7 SP1, shy on dates

Tom 35

SP1

Should be called Marketing pack 1.

But Windows 7 is more like Vista SP2, it's nothing like the Vista RTM pile of crap.

People who bought new computers and were stuck with Vista, then had to pay for an upgrade to 7 were ripped off. If you chose to buy Vista...

Microsoft, 'open' data, and the curse of open source

Tom 35

IE9 lockin

IE 9 will work better with content built to open standards, but I expect it will still have lockin.

MS will include non-standard features, to get the best advantage you need to use MS development tools, MS Server(s), and IE 9 (and Windows Vista or better).

So all the corporate apps that were developed to only work with IE6 can be updated to only work with IE 9. But this time there is a much better chance that they will still work with IE 10.

Net downloads cause 'millions of lost jobs'

Tom 35

36%

The average album has 2 or 3 good tracks if your lucky. So if people buying from iTunes only buy 2 tracks and skip the filler crap that they would have got (and payed for) on a CD. That is going to cut the money they make. It's too bad that they can't make money by bundling crap and forcing people to buy it to get what they want anymore. I'm sure this "loss" makes up a good part of their decline in sales.

Now if we could just get cable TV companies to stop bundling so you only have to pay for the channels you want to watch. Lots of cable stations would go tits up and their staff out of work because no one actually watches them, they only get paid because they are in a bundle with something people do want to watch.

Apple's draconian developer docs revealed

Tom 35

It is a Computer

It's not a single purpose black box like a Camera or DVD player (though I did hack my DVD player). An iPod touch is not just an MP3/video player like a regular iPod. It can many things just by installing software of the owners choice.

Today I was having problems with interference with one of our wireless routers at work, I wanted to know what channels other networks in the building were using so I used WiFiFoFum and switched to a free channel, problem solved. Lucky my iPod is jail broken so I could still install it after Apple pulled it from the store, and read here that it was now available free.

'Negatively strange' antihypermatter made out of gold

negative strangeness

Not hyper-boringness as it's still strange. You would need a strange value of zero for hyper-boringness.

I'm not sure how you would produce hyper-boringness, mixing positive strange and negative strange in an attempt to produce zero strange would likely result in a big bang and that's never boring.

Where did it say it was ONLY for other countries? If it's for other countries why would it say "the Court shall order the service provider to pay the copyright owner's costs". And no laws are ever used for things it was never intended for? If terror laws can be used for dog poop what will people bend this to? How do you think a group like the Scientology nuts will use it?

I notice that you have to pay the copyright holders costs if they win, but I don't see anything about them paying if they are full of crap.
