PRISM leaks: WTF, you don't spy on your friends, splutters EU

Tom 35

Re: This tells you all you need to know

For Canada I expect they get full access in exchange for a report listing all the people who say bad things about the government, big banks, and the oil sands. Saves a lot of work trying to dig that stuff on their own.

Re: This is good, but not for MS

They seem to be confused.

Do they want to be Apple or Oracle?

On one hand you have Window 8 with it's Lego interface and Angry Birds apps, Windows Phone with it's Facebook/twiter people hub, Xbox...

On the other you have server/exchange/lync...

Maybe MS should split it's self in two?

Judge nixes Microsoft SkyDrive name in BSkyB court ruling

Re: I love watching MS lose in Court

Sky is an ISP right? An internet thing. Skydrive is also an internet thing. You think Joe average is going to think they are not related?

If they were going after sky toilet paper (soft as clouds) I could see a problem, it's clear there is no relation.

You think MS would be OK with me starting up a new cloud backup service in the US called SkyBackup? Sky is just descriptive right?

Microsoft partners seriously underwhelmed by Windows 8.1

Tom 35

Am I missing something

Any use at all for Metro?

Your just using it as Win7 so why would you want to "upgrade"?

If MS did what people asked and gave you a way to kill Metro would you miss it?

Tom 35
FAIL

Re: Windows 7?

That quote is as crap as not-Metro.

It doesn't sound like Ford, looking into it people seem to agree "We have no evidence that Ford ever said those words."

It first appears in marketing crap around 2002.

Tom 35

will blend "desktop and modern computing experiences"

Will it blend? Ha Ha, maybe

We don't want a "modern computing experience" we want a desktop computing experience. We don't like "not-metro", and all the app crap that comes with it. Stop trying to be Apple. I don't what a 3" phone interface on my computer (and I'm not much interested in that phone for that mater).

"Modern" is not a name, it's a description that doesn't fit. It beats "the new iPad" on the stupid scale for a product name.

Give us an option to turn it off (all of it, not another lame pretend fix), if it's so great no one will turn it off right?

Maybe your partners can hit you with a clue-by-four, your not listing to us despite what you say.

Some of the stuff they add in 8.1 might be of use some day, but adding a start button to replace one of the invisible spots and pretending that's all everyone wanted is just pissing people off.

Windows 8.1: So it's, er, half-speed ahead for Microsoft's Plan A

Tom 35

No

"a platform designed from the beginning for touch control."

I don't know what your talking about, but it's not Windows 8. As soon as you need to do something that's not included in Metro (like the control panel) your back in Windows 7 and it's clear Metro is tacked on after the fact, not designed from the beginning.

I've more then once plugged a mouse into my crappy surface (glad they included that full size USB port) because touch was hopeless for what I was trying to do.

No Apple screws the record labels, the record labels are doing a good enough job of screwing the musicians already. I expect the musicians will be lucky to see 0.013 cents.

Re: Organic?

"You don't need much salt (processed food generally contains too much) but you do need some."

Yes people need salt, but you get more then enough even if you try to avoid it. Adding salt to stuff is just a mater of what you are used to, I know people who put salt on everything, I add salt to almost nothing (I do add some to the water when cooking some things). I don't like a lot of processed foods because they taste too salty to me.

Tom 35

Re: Organic?

I like natural peanut butter, the type where the ingredient list is Peanuts.

A while ago the local shop added organic peanut butter. I checked the ingredients and after peanuts was organic palm oil, and organic dehydrated cane juice (sugar), organic salt (wtf)

It might be organic, but it's still shit.

No I think a lot of what they are doing is illegal. But as soon as there is any danger of anyone getting in trouble they get a "get out of jail free card" like all the telcos that got immunity when people started lining up to sue them.

Any "Problems" that come up will be fixed retroactively so no need to worry about stuff like laws or rules.

Apple: If you find us guilty in ebook price-fix trial, EVERYONE suffers

Tom 35

Apple wanted to sell them for $12.99 and not be undercut by anyone.

Well boo hoo.

I'm sure Sears don't want to be undercut by Target. Should Sears be able to set the price everyone sells for?

Who gives a crap what apple want? They can charge $12.99 if they want, no problem. And everyone else can charge what they want too.

Tom 35

Re: Find them guilty

finding Apple guilty would "send shudders through the business community", according to court reporters.

"We submit a ruling against Apple on this record sets a dangerous precedent,"

Rich companies/people can't always do anything they want?

"Apple attempted to arrange the best deals possible with publishers"

Literally, make it so no one else can negotiate the best deal possible, as Apple already have an exclusive on that.

"This is an old-fashioned, straightforward price-fixing agreement."

I don't think Apple really disagree with that statement, they just don't see it as a problem, but as a good thing.

No they didn't. Not-Metro is still there, they just put some more lipstick on the pig. More colours, animated backgrounds, a start button - that takes you to not-metro.

I expect this xbox story, once you get the fine print will just be another "start button".

together with more frequent updates.

I would not count on that...

Once they have everyone they can switched over to rent by the month, they don't need to sell upgrades. If they don't need to sell upgrades*, they don't need upgrades. If they don't need upgrades... fire most of the developers and give the execs a bonus. More value for the stake holders.

*To some extent that is good, they no longer have a need to add crap like Flash support in a PDF just so they have something to put on the list of new features to sell an upgrade.

The flip side is, why develop an amazing new feature if your not going to get any more money for it?

That Microsoft-Nokia merger you've been predicting? It's no go

They think they can use desktops / laptops to make people want an MS phone / tablet.

They think not-metro is the way to do it.

People say they don't like it. Not going to buy it. Not-Metro sucks.

MS: We have to fix this... but can't remove not-metro.

Look more colours.

Look a start button to replace one of the invisible spots! That's what you asked for! All good now right!

Look animated backgrounds.. cool right?

You must say you received 37 requests that effected 42 users.

You must not say we have access to your servers/networks.

You must not say this is all a load of crap that the FISC made up.

If they don't change the law, they can say anything they want, and no one can trust what they say. Get caught? No problem, here is your pardon and "can't touch me" pass.

The only way anyone could trust anything would be to change the law, and make the "get out of jail free" passes and pardons invalid for anyone caught breaking the law.

20,000? Lucky to find 20 actually useful apps on RT.
