They seem to be confused.
Do they want to be Apple or Oracle?
On one hand you have Window 8 with it's Lego interface and Angry Birds apps, Windows Phone with it's Facebook/twiter people hub, Xbox...
On the other you have server/exchange/lync...
Maybe MS should split it's self in two?
Sky is an ISP right? An internet thing. Skydrive is also an internet thing. You think Joe average is going to think they are not related?
If they were going after sky toilet paper (soft as clouds) I could see a problem, it's clear there is no relation.

We don't want a "modern computing experience" we want a desktop computing experience. We don't like "not-metro", and all the app crap that comes with it. Stop trying to be Apple. I don't what a 3" phone interface on my computer (and I'm not much interested in that phone for that mater).
"Modern" is not a name, it's a description that doesn't fit. It beats "the new iPad" on the stupid scale for a product name.
Give us an option to turn it off (all of it, not another lame pretend fix), if it's so great no one will turn it off right?
Maybe your partners can hit you with a clue-by-four, your not listing to us despite what you say.
Some of the stuff they add in 8.1 might be of use some day, but adding a start button to replace one of the invisible spots and pretending that's all everyone wanted is just pissing people off.

I don't know what your talking about, but it's not Windows 8. As soon as you need to do something that's not included in Metro (like the control panel) your back in Windows 7 and it's clear Metro is tacked on after the fact, not designed from the beginning.
I've more then once plugged a mouse into my crappy surface (glad they included that full size USB port) because touch was hopeless for what I was trying to do.
So they are not getting any money from my anyway.

Yes people need salt, but you get more then enough even if you try to avoid it. Adding salt to stuff is just a mater of what you are used to, I know people who put salt on everything, I add salt to almost nothing (I do add some to the water when cooking some things). I don't like a lot of processed foods because they taste too salty to me.
I like natural peanut butter, the type where the ingredient list is Peanuts.
A while ago the local shop added organic peanut butter. I checked the ingredients and after peanuts was organic palm oil, and organic dehydrated cane juice (sugar), organic salt (wtf)
It might be organic, but it's still shit.
No I think a lot of what they are doing is illegal. But as soon as there is any danger of anyone getting in trouble they get a "get out of jail free card" like all the telcos that got immunity when people started lining up to sue them.
Any "Problems" that come up will be fixed retroactively so no need to worry about stuff like laws or rules.

Who gives a crap what apple want? They can charge $12.99 if they want, no problem. And everyone else can charge what they want too.

I don't think Apple really disagree with that statement, they just don't see it as a problem, but as a good thing.

No they didn't. Not-Metro is still there, they just put some more lipstick on the pig. More colours, animated backgrounds, a start button - that takes you to not-metro.
I expect this xbox story, once you get the fine print will just be another "start button".
I would not count on that...
Once they have everyone they can switched over to rent by the month, they don't need to sell upgrades. If they don't need to sell upgrades*, they don't need upgrades. If they don't need upgrades... fire most of the developers and give the execs a bonus. More value for the stake holders.
*To some extent that is good, they no longer have a need to add crap like Flash support in a PDF just so they have something to put on the list of new features to sell an upgrade.
The flip side is, why develop an amazing new feature if your not going to get any more money for it?
MS want to be Apple.
They want to sell phones and tablets.
They think they can use desktops / laptops to make people want an MS phone / tablet.
They think not-metro is the way to do it.
People say they don't like it. Not going to buy it. Not-Metro sucks.
MS: We have to fix this... but can't remove not-metro.

So it's OK for them to lock you to IE, Skydrive, and other MS services. But Google is evil for including Google services but letting you use what you want. I have Firefox on my phone, I use dropbox too.

If they don't change the law, they can say anything they want, and no one can trust what they say. Get caught? No problem, here is your pardon and "can't touch me" pass.
The only way anyone could trust anything would be to change the law, and make the "get out of jail free" passes and pardons invalid for anyone caught breaking the law.
It's not even great for media consumption. It's ok for web surfing, but the media player apps are crap.
The only thing it can do better then my Nexus 7 is handle Office files (and I've still had it crash on some of my work excel 2010 files) where I need to do more then just take a quick look at something. I'm not 100% sure I'm actually allowed to look at my work files on it, maybe my licensed copy of Office at work covers me...
