Major problems beset UK ISP filth filters: But it's OK, nobody uses them

Tom 35

pr0n was actually rather popular

Or maybe it's the other stuff that they block as well, things like online translators that might be used to get round the filter.

EU's top data cops to meet Google, Microsoft et al over 'right to be forgotten'

Re: Never mind that

What victims?

You want Google or Microsoft deciding what is in the public interest?

This whole thing is as dumb as a bag of hammers.

Will the next US-EU trade pact prevent Brussels acting against US tech giants?

Tom 35

I don't see what the size of the offended party has to do with it.

Because large corporations wrote this thing. It's going to be setup to work for large corporations with teams of lawyers on staff. In the same way a corner shop can't assign their trademarks to a postbox in a tax haven the way Starbucks can.

Tom 35

Drug companies?

All that testing is cutting into profits. Sure our new super addictive happy pill has killed a few people but our profits are up 47%.

EU dons gloves, pokes Google's deals with Android mobe makers

Tom 35

Blame the telco

They like android because they can install all kinds of crap if they want. But if you buy anything but the newest top of the line phone you can forget them providing any upgrades at all.

So Google wants to be able to upgrade more of the phones features from the app store.

They want to compete with Apple who don't let the phone companies control the upgrades. If Google upgrade android from 4.4.3 to 4.4.4 the phone companies don't give a crap, they just want you to buy a new phone every 2 years anyway. But now more stuff is part of the google blob so you can upgrade your camera from the google play store without needing an OS upgrade from the phone company.

The only thing they should be looking at is to make sure they are not pulling a Microsoft and using incentives to make sure all of a companies devices are google devices. If Amazon want to make a google phone, but keep selling the non-google fire that should be OK.

British cops cuff 660 suspected paedophiles

Tom 35

Re: for some definition of paedophile...

That's the same defense given against the ivory trade. "it's okay to buy it because I am not directly killing the animals"

That is a bit like the "you wouldn't steal a car" line though. Every bit of ivory is part of an elephant, and you can only sell it once. Ivory porn would be a picture of a piano. It might even be a drawing, or CGI rendering of a piano.

Tom 35

Re: for some definition of paedophile...

"The police do not spend 6 months investigating and then make an arrest for a handful of links in someones history,"

They also don't just happen to arrest 600 people at the same time unless it's a circus.

Tom 35

Re: Police declined to explain how they "snared" the suspects

Yes IF they have arrested people found with actual kiddy porn... Good Job!

If they were an IP in a log file, or a couple of thumbnail images, or a cartoon that looked like she might be under age, or credit cards again. BAD. "Kill them all and let God sort them out" is not how you should run a police force.

Price cuts, new features coming for Office 365 small biz customers

Tom 35

For people who don't buy every upgrade

Loads of people went from 2003, to 2010, and are not even thinking of 2013... how much more will Office 365 cost people like that? Of course that's the reason MS (and Adobe) are pushing the rental model.

And once they force every one onto the rental plan they will not even have to bother updating the software until the free software catches up at least.

Voteware source code review 'could lead to hacking'

Tom 35

Re: Once a trouble maker always...

"This is why only a fool would allow the source code out."

The programmers and others at the company already know the source code.

So if it's as crap as you say any one of them can pick the winner. Or maybe the owner of the company would like a change to the tax laws to go through, have his company get more contracts...

Tom 35

such a request could “leave the voting system open to hacking or manipulation"... by other people?

The source code includes variables like "Desired_Winner" and "Winning_margin" ?

"live" tiles

I thought the mail one would be useful, until I had read all my new mail and the stupid thing started distracting me by displaying old read emails. Disabled.

It took very little time for me to disable, and shrink all the live tiles on my surface. Out of the box it was like a web page full of Flash ads.

How is it going to talk to the heating system?

"In Europe, however, where thermostats either have to be mains-powered – which means a more challenging 240v install – or battery-powered, it’s more of a problem. In this respect, wireless is less life-threatening"

Sure the wireless thermostat can talk to the internet, but how is it going to talk to the heating system? Your going to have to connect something to the heating system and your right back to 240v.

The real advantage of wireless is being able to put the thermostat in a good spot instead of were it was easy to run the wires.

UK's emergency data slurp: IT giants panicked over 'legal uncertainty'

Tom 35

Re: Funny ...

You think they have been sitting on their hands since April?

I expect the new law took them 5 minutes, but they waited to sneak it in at the last second so they would not have to deal with people saying this one is just as bad as the old unlawful law. They figure someone will come up with something to distract people by the time they get back.

There is no point making a challenge to our new emergency law since it will automatically end in 2016 when we will have a new law that everyone will like...

Google de-listing of BBC article 'broke UK and Euro public interest laws' - So WHY do it?

Tom 35

Like the DMCA

Who is Google to decide if something is in the public interest? Can you even define what "in the public interest" is, or is it one of the I know it when I see it type things?

They are a company so they only care about what is in the companies interest, if they don't de-list something they could end up with court costs defending that.

If the request comes from Joe Average guy, they can ignore it. From a lawyer, or a corporation? Link is toast. Only in the most black and white cases will they not remove the link.

As I said before this will be just like Youtube and the DMCA. If Youtube get a takedown request your video is toast. Even if it perfectly legal and it's now your problem to get it put back. This is abused on purpose to get rid of stuff people don't like, or in error by automatic systems. I have personally experienced this when one division of a major record label proved me with material to promote a bands appearance and approved the final site, but a different division of the same company had the site taken down with a DMCA request a day later.

Sydney wallows in cesspit of WiFi obsolescence and ignorance

Tom 35

How did they control for free WiFi

The local Cable monopoly (Rogers) have routers* that provide two SSIDs, One secured, and a guest SSID that appears to be wide open but requires you to open an HTTPS: webpage and enter a password (so all your non SSL traffic is not encrypted).

*That only need to be rebooted a few times a week.

Tom 35

Re: Easy access? on iOS there's...

Yes both Android and IOS have controls but I think a lot of them were added after Apple got a good kicking for living off the avails of scam apps. My old iPod touch only had a small subset of the stuff you list and they made it real easy to setup an account linked to a credit card and everything wide open by default. You could setup an account without a credit card but is was a bit like setting up Windows 8 without a microsoft account.

As for Google, the playstore gift cards have been available in Canada for about half a year, and have only matched the wide availability of iTunes cards for a few months.

We need to talk about SPEAKERS: Sorry, 'audiophiles', only IT will break the sound barrier

Tom 35

Re: The ear can't hear square waves.

You might feed a square wave into a speaker, but it's not going to be very square when it comes out as sound. Even if you could move (and stop) the speaker cone fast enough the air it moves compresses.

Tom 35

Re: Improving your reproduction

And any "new" speakers will immediately have magic woo applied to them. They will be made to look like space ships by designers who are considered more important then the engineers by the marketing department.

You just going to end up "needing" a thousand dollar power cord for each speaker instead of just one for your power amp.
