You are absolutely right; USB's spec ties performance to the CPU and system, thus making it depend on a lot of things other than itself. I'll stick with Firewire, where applicable.

New analysis points to ancient Martian ocean, river valleys

Richard 102

Martian Atmosphere

My understanding (which may darn well be wrong) is that Mars' atmosphere got thin because 1) Mars has less gravitation pull than Earth or Venus, so it didn't have as much to begin with; 2) therefore, it loses its atmosphere more quickly that Earth or Venus do; 3) when the core solidified, the volcanic/tectonic activity, which releases a lot of gas into the atmosphere, stopped replenishing the atmosphere; 4) the magnetic field got much less intense as well when the core solidified, so the solar wind blasted the atmosphere more; 5) western civilization polluted the air with poisonous CO2 from the Military-Industrial Complex (C) to keep women and minorities suppressed.

Richard 102

One thing bothers me

There are areas of Mars that are heavily cratered, in the southern hemisphere. In fact, the first three Mariner missions to Mars were all fly-bys of the southern hemisphere. When Mariner 9 started transmitting images, as the dust storm subsided, scientists were shocked by four huge volcanos, Mariner Valley, etc.

Now, if those rains and oceans occured long enough in the past to case the erosion seen, would the cratered areas have remained so? Yes, they might have been deserts, but wind and weather patterns can change, and there might have been SOME rain there to go with 4.5 billion years of wind/dust erosion.

I'm sure they'll work it out, but it does make me skeptical.

We lost that here in the states after the 1916 election. My great-grandfather, a third-generation American, was pulled from dinner with his family nearly beaten to death on his front lawn in front of his wife and kids for commiting the crime of having a German last name. This was a certain organization that a certain US President re-elected around that time encouraged via law, money, and executive order. All to help the Limeys beat the Hun.

iPhone conquers half the (smartphone) world

Richard 102

Blackberry

I used to carry one for work. I was unable to put any unauthorized app on it, so these numbers might reflect that. Still, if you're writing apps, that's useful to know. Even if there are three times as many Blackberries as iPhones, that means little if the Blackberry users can't/won't/don't put an app on there.

PC sales bounce up (and down)

Richard 102

Doesn't surprise me

The PC business, in general, is a race to the bottom, as all commodity markets are. It's why Japan beat the US on cheap cars, then Korea started overtaking Japan, and now Korea is being threatened by others (China, Malaysia, India, etc).

Queen promises to make poverty and budget deficits illegal

Richard 102
Grenade

Outlaw poverty?

Isn't that a moving target? I remember reading that, in 1990, you could make more money than 97% of the rest of the world and still qualify for poverty benefits.

The real cause of poverty is people making poor personal choices. Stephen Moore of the Cato Institute (a libertarian think tank in DC) had a book called "Getting Better All the Time" where he talked about trends in the US through the 20th century and how life has improved. One thing I remember vividly. In the US, if you:

1) graduate high school at the age of 19 or younger,

2) have your first child at the age of 20 or older, and

3) are married to the other parent when that child is born (not conceived, but born)

then you are 98% likely to never need government poverty benefits. Now, to make poverty "illegal", we will need to have the government meddling EVEN DEEPER in our lives, and really, that isn't going to solve anything except the problem of how to get more totalitarian government bureaucracy ... and ask people in eastern Germany how well that worked 20 years ago.

Jobs Halo

@Jess

I think you might be missing a point. If you want to buy a copy of OS X and try to hack it to run on some hardware, Apple probably wouldn't object. For one thing, you weren't going to buy their hardware anyway. They made a sale of OS X. And they won't do any support for you, obviously.

Now, Psystar was doing this, but not for personal use, but reselling the boxes. This is directly in violation of the EULA and about five or six laws. Why Psystar thought this would go unchallenged and thought they would have a legal leg to stand on is beyond me.

Washington State University

... is called The Cougars.

There are some very odd team names here in the colonies. There are the usual things you'd suspect: big scary animals like Lions, Bears, Tigers, etc. You get names like Spartans, Warriors, Giants, etc. Bulldogs is common, given that they are tenacious strong dogs, and Blue Devils/Red Devils/Blue Demons/etc are more common than you'd think. Indian names used to be common but those have, sadly, largely gone away. Oddly enough, Florida State University is known as the Seminoles, and the Seminole nation is happy that they continue with the name. It's good publicity for them, the university works with them to keep things inoffensive, and there are financial benefits to the tribe as well. The irony is that the NCAA, which is the organization that regulate intercollegiate athletics, is trying to get rid of all Indian names, but they are based in Indianapolis, Indiana. Then again, there have been years when the entire Boston Celtics NBA team is black, and no one says anything about the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, so whatever.

But there are some that make you laugh or scratch your head. A high school in Illinois is known as The Wooden Shoes. (Dutch settlement, I'd guess.) Purdue University is known as the Boilermakers because the city of Lafayette, IN, once had the largest boiler factory in the US and you had to be strong to work there. My graduate school, Colorado, was the Buffaloes ... which is not only a euphamism, but also strikes fear into opponents by suggesting an image of a large herbivore pooping on the prairie dogs. My favorite has to be the University of California at Santa Cruz, known as The Banana Slugs.
