If you have a Mac then you can drag an MP3 into Garageband, set a small loop from within the MP3 and then select export to ringtones. It'll send it to iTunes and you can SYNC next time you plug the phone in. It won't work with DRM'd stuff though, obviously. I imagine there's something that'll do the same job in Windows too.

As for keeping the iPhone in your pocket you guys are talking rubbish. I keep mine in my pocket fine even when I'm cycling and it's not broken or uncomfortable. The reason people get it out and put it on the table is to show off!
All mobile phone companies are as bad as each other. Vodafone seem to be permanently performing maintenance on their website, 3 will call you up and pretend to be your current provider offering an upgrade to trick you into switching to them and they're all just out to rip you off any chance they get.
