I'll wait for the PC version

Every complaint I've heard against this game is along the lines of "the console controls are crap", as is almost always the case with strategy/God games, so I'll wait for the PC version and use a mouse.

You'd better cut yours off then. Wouldn't want you having any offensive children.

It's official: IE users are dumb as a bag of hammers

Greg J Preece

Oh God..

Opera users don't need more incentive to act like smug bell-ends, surely?

Tried using it again this week after I did something stupid to my Firefox profile and couldn't be arsed rebuilding it for a few days. It's never been a shit browser, but in the end I missed the Awesome Bar and my plugins too much and rebuilt my FF profile. Muuuch better.

Nintendo set to make a loss on every 3DS

Greg J Preece

Don't tell me people are wising up...

...to NIntendo's bullshit? Re-releasing decade-old games and tacking on additional 3D gimmicks, remaking the same games over and over and over, not giving a shit about the quality of their online service, etc, etc?

Perhaps with their next console they'll get back to actually maki-oh, wait....Wii U.

No it's not

Can't agree. I ran XP x64 for years until Windows 7 came out on my desktop at home. I don't think it ever crashed, not once.

Apple kills MacBook, soups up MacBook Air

Greg J Preece

Interesting...

Greg J Preece

No MacBook?

Wasn't that the only model available in black? Slap an Android sticker over the Apple logo and no-one ever spots it's an Apple machine.

Adobe resuscitates 64-bit Flash for Linux

Greg J Preece

Been running this for ages

Flash-Aid has been installing 64-bit Flash for ages. They were the 10.x betas from Adobe Labs, and they were pretty damned stable. Wonder how good this one is.

Microsoft kills Windows Vista SP1 support

Greg J Preece

Double dipping

I know people were very reluctant to upgrade to Vista on the whole, but I'd be interested to see whether MS has made that deficit up by double-dipping its Vista customers for copies of the working version, Win7.

And if it turns out they actually made more money that way, who's betting 8 will be crap, and 9 will fix all its flaws?

Linux

Not faster, but not slower either

My machine used to run XP x64, now runs Win7 x64 and Linux Mint dual boot. I can't detect any noticeable difference in speed between the two Windows versions. Linux is, naturally, faster than both of them. ;-)

Sony pains pre-owned game punters with PSN Pass

Greg J Preece

I prefer this, TBH

Paying a nominal fee to get online with a 2nd hand copy is better than the alternative, where the code is permanently registered to you, and you then can't ever sell your game. See almost all modern PC games.

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E420s 14in Core i5 laptop

Greg J Preece

I love these things

We have a number of the earlier Edge machines in the office, with the same casing and keyboard layout, and they're great. They feel solid and well built, look understated and classy in matte black (unlike their predecessors, the N300/N500 range with their tacky silver lids), and as business machines are reliable, quick little machines. The keyboards are nice too, with my only criticism being the arrow key/paging arrangement being a bit fiddly. They also run Mint perfectly out of the box. ;-)

Greg J Preece

I hope they don't

Facebook have all the crap you post on Facebook. Google also have your e-mail, searches, browsing history if you're a Chrome user, and possibly purchase history too. And mobile phone usage, if you're an Android user.

And you trust Facebook less?

Apple orders millions of iPhone 5s for September release

Oh cynical me

"Apple makes things really easy to upgrade handsets and not lose a single thing."

I suspect this is more Apple making it really easy to *restore* handsets, given the number of times ours have needed it doing after a good ol' bricking.

Sony quietly tests PlayStation Network revamp

Greg J Preece

Good call!

An excellent point.

Greg J Preece

I haven't missed it, old bean

I know the icon you mean, but most of the time it just doesn't put in an appearance. And tagging on to what I originally wrote, being able to exclude previously bought items from the search results would be nice.

Greg J Preece

Desires as a long time user

1. Force developers to have game previews. There are tons of games on the PSN that you cannot see before purchase, in any form. No screens, no vids, just a (very) short bit of text, the Sony licencing blah-blah, and a buy button. Get stuffed.

2. Reduce the size of the half-screen featured game window and increase the size of the search results list. Add some more detail to it.

3. Get rid of the fecking wallet. It is so completely pointless it makes me angry. Sony are nice enough to list their games in actual money, rather than con-artist bullpoints like MS and Nintendo, but then they introduce this bloody thing. Buy anything over £5 and the store lets you add exactly the price of whatever it is you're buying anyway, so what's the point of the chuffing wallet??

4. Make it blindingly obvious which games are full games, which are demos, which are expansions, etc, without having to click in and wait for a separate page to load. In fact, group all the entries for a game or series together. I know you do it for some, so do it for all of them!

5. Make it blindingly obvious which games, expansions and sets I already own.

6. Find out where the latest expansion for Super Stardust HD has disappeared to so I can buy it.

Aussie retailer accuses UK shops of HDMI 'scam'

Greg J Preece

You're an idiot

"when it comes to digital cables, i suggest anyone to compare cheap hdmi and hdmi from audioquest for example. if you can't see the difference then you probably don't need that hd telly you're buying cable for"

A lot of audio cables are not digital. HDMI is. You don't get a different string of 1s and 0s at the TV if you buy a more expensive cable. The picture will be identical. Exactly the same. Indistinguishable.

If you believe otherwise, I suggest you do some research yourself. You probably don't need that overpriced cable you're buying for that HD telly you don't understand.

Greg J Preece

YES!

I've been saying this for years! Dixons will happily charge you £60+ for a 2m "insulated, gold plated, interference-free" HDMI cable, and their sales droids will upsell them to the best of their ability.

I remember buying my TV from Currys, and the droid there was trying to sell me all sorts of power adaptors, along with a £75 HDMI cable "for best quality". When I pointed out that those cables were pointless, and only complete mugs would buy them, he looked particularly abashed. Turned out he'd bought several himself for his own setup. Whoops!

The HDMI cables into my PS3 and Freesat box cost £1.20 each, and work perfectly. God bless eBay.

The freakonomics of smut: Does it actually cause rape?

Greg J Preece

Everything?

"Here's an idea - why don't we execute paedophiles instead? I'm quite certain the statistics will show that this reduces the rate of re-offence, and therefore results in an overall reduction in child abuse. What's wrong with my conclusion?"

Has the execution of murderers in America done anything to the murder rate? Personally, I find anyone calling for the murder of another human being as the simple solution to a problem far more tasteless, offensive and disturbing than a calmly written article asking questions.

I don't agree with everything in the article, and I dislike its implication that people who watch porn objectify women, not least because it assumes everyone watching porn is male, but your comment is simply vile.

Sega celebrates two decades of Sonic the Hedgehog

Greg J Preece

Are you referring to Sonic 4?

Also known as Exactly The Same Game As Sonic 2?

Greg J Preece

While I don't entirely agree

While I don't entirely agree - part of the rush of Sonic was the sheer speed and testing your reactions - I did feel sorry for the artists working on Sonic Adventure 1. All that effort put into making their 3D levels pretty to look at, all that detail, and you scream past it at 300mph.

Greg J Preece

20 years since he started

And 10 since his games were any good.

Apple will 'own games industry'

Greg J Preece

Other reasons?

"Console and games sales have been down over the past few years. Mobile gaming is the only growth area."

Is this down to mobile gaming being the future, though, or is it down to people not having as much cash in recent years, so £40 a game is a bit steep, whereas mobile games are hardly expensive? Also, those recent years have seen the explosion of the dumbphone fad, which doubtless will have helped as mesmerised plebs all discovered this amazing new "touchscreen" stuff.

The Wii was supposed to be the amazing gaming future, remember? Millions upon millions of sales, take over the planet, never be the same again. Then everyone realised that most of the games on it were shit, as was the hardware, the online experience, and the support.

Fashion and fad only affect things in the short term. Console gaming has been around a long time.

Greg J Preece

Eh?

"FPSs and MMOGS may be part of the future of gaming -- but they're not mainstream, at least from what I can see."

Point to any male aged between 14 and 25 who hasn't played a Call of Duty game. Seriously.

Greg J Preece

You didn't just...

...hold up Halo as an example of good game narrative, did you?

Greg J Preece

I hope so

Steam is an absolute miracle, in that it's a piece of DRM I don't mind having. Because it's multi-platform *and* multi-publisher, there's competition in the market, meaning that unlike other online markets, prices do come down over time, promotions are worth the user's time, etc.

EA/Ubisoft/your mum might be working on their own delivery platforms, but because of their control freakery and tendency to shaft the customer, they'll fail, and end up back on Steam.

Apple? Phhhhht. Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja might be mindless commuter distractions, but given that the PSP already does this kind of digital distribution, and the next one will be 3G capable, who gives a shit about iPad gaming? Yes, very nice, keep playing with Baby's First Console, I'll be over here playing Uncharted.

I tell you what...

...that "gears" level doesn't half look like the "fear" level from the end of Rez.

Man, I have been waiting years for this game. I loved Rez with a disturbing passion. Imported the soundtrack CD and it's other slightly *ahem* interesting peripheral. And being a PS3 gamer, I have to wait a little while longer...

Greg J Preece

Yes, it's a Move game

But according to my yet-again-delayed Play.com pre-order, the PS3 version isn't out until September. Don't ask me why - the dates for the two consoles were identical right up until about 6 weeks ago.

Re: Appropriate Name

I seem to remember reading in a deGrasse Tyson book that all the planets were named this way - the planet itself after the Roman god, and the moons after the children of their equivalent in the Greek pantheon. Or something like that...

"I'm sure 99% of users will never want to do that."

What, multitask, use flash, and chat to people? Or are you just focusing on one thing I use it for? In either event, saying it's now too advanced for most people kinda contradicts it being "lacklustre".

Sure, it's a nerdy phone - you act like there's a problem with that. Non-nerds have the N8 and the upcoming Windows stuff, but I like that Nokia still make a range proper smartphones, with an emphasis on the smart over the stylish.

Google bypasses admin controls with latest Chrome IE

Greg J Preece

Just like Chrome!

"Google has released a new version of Chrome Frame – the Internet Explorer plug-in that turns Microsoft's browser into a Google browser – letting users install the plug-in even when they don't have administrator privileges on their machines."

Just like their main Chrome browser has been doing since it was released. Turn off install privileges for your user, and Chrome just installs itself in their user directory. I figured out the best way to stop it was to create the Chrome install folder on the machines in advance, then revoke any and all write permissions to it. Boom! No Chrome.

I don't know why they think this kind of thing is acceptable. Trying to up your market share at the cost of security on the few machines I have still running Windows == your product gets banned from the network.

Screenshot query

Bottom of page 2 - isn't that one of the early missions from the first game? When you're still being introduced to climb+shoot they have you get that food drop down, and then you can choose whether or not to slaughter the crowd that comes looking. That square is definitely Empire City.

Mozilla pushes out final Firefox 5 test build

Greg J Preece

Wow...

...just when you thought the Opera fanboys couldn't get any more stupid. Version numbers aren't a dick measuring contest. Windows is still on 6.1.

Also, another way of looking at Firefox vs Opera is that it didn't take Firefox as many versions to be the better browser.
