Game Group shares slide under a penny

Greg J Preece

Re: Been failing for 15 years +

"As for the second hand stores, all they do is rob money from the game developers and, in an industry where a £20 million product can be judged a flop in a handful of weeks, those of us gamers who give a sh*t about innovation and quality instead of "yet-another-FPS" (Syndicate EA, really?) should always try to buy new copies from their retailer of choice."

Bollocks, and bollocks I'm sick of hearing. If it wasn't for the 2nd hand market, I'd have never become a gamer, because the new games are too expensive for anyone under 20. If it wasn't for the 2nd hand market, I would never have played the most innovative games, because they quickly disappear under a tide of X-box shit and it takes a cult following to bring them to light. If it wasn't for the 2nd hand market, I wouldn't have gotten into half the games I have, or have a huge collection as I do.

I still give huge amounts of money to the game industry all the time, but if the publishers had it their way we'd be paying £50 a pop for ten year old games. This is the *only* industry we hear this bullshit bleating from. In every other industry, a purchase is regarded as something you own, and can do with as you please. Only in the games industry has this strange attitude grown that anyone not paying the poor, neglected largest entertainment sector on Earth the full price is some thieving scumbag. Sod off.

I *do* care about gaming, a hell of a lot, but I show support for brilliant and innovative games by spreading the word, encouraging uptake. If someone I recommend Rez to buys it 2nd hand to try it, and likes it, then they might pre-order Child of Eden at full price, and the developer makes moolah they wouldn't have otherwise. The developers can take their moaning and shove it, and stop trying to make me feel like a thief because their products are overpriced.

"where else can you get good value second hand video games on the high street?"

CeX. Waaay cheaper than Game, in almost every instance, plus the staff tend to know their stuff. CeX have been storming through a recession and opening new stores, because they price stuff a bit cheaper and get the stock shifted out. They're not too proud to slice a price if it moves stock, and Game are.

Price is Game's biggest problem. I can't count the number of times I've been in their PC section wondering how many litres of piss they're taking. The staff are alright, the store's not bad, it's just the pricing that's generally insane.

And I can't forgive them for what they did to Gamestation. That place was fantastic before Game got their teeth into it. A proper retro section stretching back to the Master System, rare or classic games kept in a cabinet, great staff, great prices, and then Game bought it. Retro was killed off immediately, the place started selling DVDs and later Blu Ray, and it just became another Game store. What a loss.

The fire sale's already started, though. Is anyone fooled by their "Spring Clean" sale? I bought 4 games at the weekend for the price of just one two weeks prior.

And as for the supermarkets, they're worse. A tiny selection of whatever games the staff have heard of, stock older then the person you're buying it for, and daft prices. ASDA are marginally better than the others, but only marginally. Sod that.

Nope, if Game goes, it'll be CeX only for me. That, and BHF. For some inexplicable reason, BHF round here always have great games in from a few years ago, at about a quid a piece!

Re: This sort of tosh happens all the time

I was looking at the specs of the Huawei Mediapad on the Orange website today. Apparently it has "dual 1.2GHz processors". Really? Not one dual-core processor, then?

Greg J Preece

Yeah, I mean for christ's sake, it's only a network/mobile maker effectively lying about their product's capabilities in order to promote it over identical offerings. Anyone would think this was a technology website or something! Let's ditch these stupid non-news stories and get back to global economics and interviews with Greenpeace.

Ah, the repressed sexual attitudes. God forbid that someone under the age of 18 ever accept their own horrible, nasty, filthy human body, or understand it. That would just corrupt their tiny, fragile minds. The mere mention of sex within 100 metres of an infants school would cause hundreds of deaths, grey matter leaking from tiny innocent noses.

Clearly, mollycoddling is the way to go.

Re: KDE FTW!!!

Couldn't agree more. KDE might not be (by default) the prettiest or slickest UI in the world, and people looking at a fresh install might just think "Windows clone", but to me it's a well established system with a great app suite, and every single corner of it just bristles with config options.

How big do you want your panel? Should it be translucent? What should it contain, and do you need more than one? What widgets do you want on which screen at what size with what options? Do you want to ditch the whole thing and just have an icon-based launcher on the desktop? Should this window be solo, part of a group, sit on top, or drop its surround altogether?

If you're the kind of person who wants things to work your way, KDE is brilliant. It doesn't take long to config, as pretty much everything is GUI controlled, and once it's kitted out, everything you need is exactly where you want it. Been using it for years, and having played with GNOME/Unity from time to time, I can't see myself going back. (That is, on a desktop. Tried Ubuntu TV at the MWC and it looks fantastic.)

Sony to strike gold with PS Vita - if it cuts the price

Greg J Preece

Judging by this thread and others I've read, the common theme is "it's a really nice system, but we're waiting until it comes down a bit". Sony had better get on with those price cuts and take an initial-loss approach if they don't want this thing to suddenly flop like the 3DS did.

Greg J Preece

It's not the console - compared to a 3DS and even the original PSP at launch it's pretty reasonable. It's the games. It should not even be possible to pay £40 or more for a portable game, unless it's bundled with the PS3 copy as well.

Death to Office or to Windows - choose wisely, Microsoft

Greg J Preece

@nexsphil

Nice anti-Linux rant there, but at what point did I make any reference to it going mainstream? I was only talking about it being supported through the use of OpenGL.

Greg J Preece

I don't think Windows will die, as you put it. I can certainly see its market share being drastically reduced, as we've seen with IE. Computing consumers these days are a bit more savvy to alternatives, and the ones that aren't are drawn in by Apple's shiny gimmickery. But I don't think it will die, simply because of what depends on it.

Games, for example, largely require DirectX, and while it's heartening to see the recent dearth of excellent indie PC games that have gone tri-platform (check out the Humble Bundles), all the big-name stuff is pretty much Windows only, with the odd one getting a Mac port a year down the line. If the death of Windows were the target, then lashings of money would need to be spent beefing up OpenGL and moving onto it. I'd love for that to happen (games on Linux woo), but I don't think it will.

Re: Weirdos

"And why the spite against a successful company that makes good, attractive hardware and software that real people like, even enjoy?"

Or worship? I mean, who doesn't say a quick prayer or two to Lord Jobs in the morning, before work? It's just a personal belief, and I'm entitled to it. Who are you to say that Apple didn't invent the wheel? Were you there? Can you prove it, or is this just another "theory"?

The ones to watch out for are the non-believers, these angry atheists. They'll distort history with lies, tell you that Apple are a litigious bunch of shitheads that gained a position through slick marketing and are now attempting to hold onto it with lawyers rather than innovation. I mean, we all know that Android is an evil communist plot. I've read the holy letters of Saint Steve, and it's right there in black and white. He said it, I believe it, that's an end of it.

Samsung Series 9 skinny laptop priced for Blighty

Greg J Preece

Re: What's the obsession with 'thinnest'?

Amen. People are always criticising my smartphone for being a "brick". Erm...what? My original mobile phone came with a belt clip and could only text in upper-case, and an N series is a brick because it has a proper keyboard and a decent camera?

I couldn't give two shits if another phone is a few mm thinner - what does that gain me anyway? A more fragile device? If it's an extra 20g heavier, will my weak, crippled hands not be able to heft it all the way to my head?

No, of course not. It's just faddish elitism.

Nice idea, and I genuinely think that a portable personal "core" that you carry and connect to shells tailored for a given task is a possible future of computing.

That said, quit pissing around and make a smartphone already! Maemo/MeeGo are dead in the water (again), and everyone and their dog's moving to dumbed-down walled-off systems that send a packet back to the manufacturer every time you pick your nose. Canonical making a phone is my last hope for a useful Linux-based device that drops the irritating hardware abstraction, lets me hack it to bits as I see fit, and is actually natively capable of performing advanced tasks and getting things done.

Modern Warfare 3 shoots onto Steam for free

Greg J Preece

This was announced last weekend, and I believe that it could be pre-loaded, so hopefully Steam anticipated that waaaay in advance.

I'm just brassed off that Killing Floor was piss cheap again this week. Every time that happens the harder servers flood with CoD/L4D playing newbies who reckon they're tough. They spawn into a game at level 0, cause a huge zombie spawn, get massacred, and rage quit, leaving the regular players on their own against a horde.

Greg J Preece

I was only interested in the single-player, so I'll wait for the next Steam sale, ta.

Ageing Mario blamed for Nintendo's woes

My first ever Wii points card came through the post today (Sin and Punishment the intended target), and I am dreading using it. For a start, it means having to use the bloody store with that bloody interface and that bloody elevator music.

Secondly, the card doesn't just come as a card, oh no. It comes with a DVD, and you just know that it'll be another patronising, repetitive for-fuckwits tutorial that you must watch to continue your task, a la Motion Plus. Five minute unskippable retard-guides, that's what my console was misssing...

Greg J Preece

Re: Analogue Mario?

Unless you had a very unusual setup, he was at least output via analogue means.

Greg J Preece

@FartingHippo

Surely you're not including Other M?

Greg J Preece

This has been the problem with Nintendo for years, but the fanboys refuse to admit or accept it. They just re-hash the same Mario and Zelda games every few years with very little in the way of actual innovation. (No, fanboys, gimmicky controllers and screens everyone stops using after they realise how much they suck do NOT count as gaming innovation.)

I have both console and handheld Nintendo platforms in my armoury, but finding decent games for them is a real challenge, wading through tides of shit and shovelware. That's why Mario games on the consoles continue to command insane prices years after release - because there's nothing else worth playing.

The Sony and MS consoles might have their own shitty "mainstream" titles that they roll out over and over, but at least the other developers are making enough of an effort that you can leave that well-trodden road and find the good stuff.

Black Ops has best videogame ending ever

Greg J Preece

Now, don't get me wrong, because I *love* Okami, but I thought the ending wasn't that good. The last boss was a bloody insult. Some really creative, fun bosses before that, with personalities no less, and the last enemy is just a cheap, beardy robot who never so much as taunts you. "In that room there is the big bad, go murder him."

Missed Deus Ex 1 from that - the branching endings were all pretty sweet.

Also, Psychonauts. Nuff said.

Hmm, anything from before 2004 in there? Looks like another survey handed out to 13 year olds.

Personally, the most memorable for me was probably HL2, when time stops and the G-man just walks out at you. That was bloody cool.

Microsoft mulls touchscreen controller for next-gen Xbox

Greg J Preece

The cockles of my heart were warmed the other day when I finally got hold of Super Stardust Delta on the Vita and found that there is an entire play mode dedicated to turning all that motion control/touchscreen bullshit off, and playing properly. Kick ass!

Greg J Preece

Amen! Shinier kit and fancier controllers do not make for better games. Even with the Wii turning into a shitpile of shovelware and the Kinect/Move largely falling flat on their arse for anything other than "party" (read: crap) games and 8-year-olds, console manufacturers have realised how much money they can make off all that peripheral goodness.

I just don't get it. Back on the PS2 it was nigh-on impossible to persuade people to buy a Guncon2, but people will queue for midnight releases for a bloody Kinect.

One thing that I think is weirdly true - the manufacturers are in danger of creating a generation of consoles that gamers don't want to play. And once the magpies get over their latest fad, there could be some interesting fallout.
