To the Norwegian Correctional Services: I am offering, free of charge, my IT/IS and coding skills to the creation of a website to be used as a video streaming platform. For the purpose of freely allowing everyone on the internet to witness the slow death of this rotten scum during his hunger strike. I'll even throw in the webcam.

"Mobile 'killswitch' mandate"

It's just one more turn of the US gov's knife, that's in the back of every citizen. It is a mechanism designed to control communication and free speech, whenever they need to supress it. The government and law enforement should be more concerned with keeping mobile device thieves off of the street longer with stronger penalties. And, persuading more states to adopt concealed-handgun laws. Then, let the citizens and gun manufacturers come to a more sensible way of detouring this type of criminal behavior. ;-D

Microsoft unveils 'do not track' option for IE9

Re: @david wilson

In reference to 'do not spam' for email inboxes.. Most email clients already have filtering with blacklists. the reference was a silly comparison to something like a statewide 'do not call' list.

In reference to: "A 'do not track' browser setting could be designed to prevent a blacklisted (or non-whitelisted) site leaving any trace (not merely requesting that a site doesn't engage in tracking), and have its operation updated to keep up with attempts to get round it."

I invite you to read a comment left by "Paul 98" title: "Cookies aren't the real problem #". It's further down the comment list. Cheers ;)

Re: david wilson "How can it 'not work'..."

I'm sure that M$ is refering to persistant "Flash" cookies. I wrote a Linux script a year ago, which removes flash-cookies while browsing. However, there is a new type of cookie making its way across the web. The EverCookie. The following address links provides more info and definition of what an evercookie actually is: "http://samy.pl/evercookie/" . Here's one more: "http://www.boingboing.net/2010/09/22/evercookie-a-trackin.html" . The first link is the actual developer's site. I've been to the site.. (No, it doesn't leave an evercookie on your browser).

"Like 'do not call' for browsers"

That's as stupid as a "Do Not Spam" for your email inbox. Some legitamate companies might agree to it. But, there are millions that won't, globally speaking. It won't work in the virtual world of the internet.

Old PCs: When it's time to die

Daemon ZOGG

RE: Enough is enough

Linux is never too fat for old PCs. It just needs a little more thought before installing. For example:

Choose a "stable release" distribution that offers the option to initially install without a GUI. From the bash shell, install a GUI that will have a smaller memory footprint (i.e. Fluxbox, XFCE, LXDE)--(xwinman.org). You can also re-compile the kernel and weed-out any un-needed support modules/drivers to further reduce demand on hardware resources. ;D

We don't need no stinkin' Pope. . .As if we need the Vatican's permission to get into heaven or something. The people of the world could reduce the entire Vatican to a pile of dust, and it wouldn't change the fact that God will always be God, the son of God will always be the son, and the apostles will always be who they are.

The Vatican cannot copyright or trademark the holy cross, the image of the holy spirit or anything representative of the holy spirit, or the son of the holy spirit. The Vatican is simply a regional corporate representative for the church on planet Earth. We already know where "HQ" is.

We will deal with the Vatican the same way we deal with other copyright overlords... "P2P". ;p

"This is the loss of freedom we face when our privacy is taken from us. This is life in former East Germany, or life in Saddam Hussein's Iraq. And it's our future as we allow an ever-intrusive eye into our personal, private lives.

Too many wrongly characterize the debate as "security versus privacy." The real choice is liberty versus control. Tyranny, whether it arises under threat of foreign physical attack or under constant domestic authoritative scrutiny, is still tyranny. Liberty requires security without intrusion, security plus privacy. Widespread police surveillance is the very definition of a police state. And that's why we should champion privacy even when we have nothing to hide."

Early adopters bloodied by Ubuntu's Karmic Koala

Daemon ZOGG
Linux

Ubuntu And "New" Releases of Linux...

First. I have 10 years of experience in Linux and BSD Unix. I have installed, and configured all of the major Linux distributions for both server and desktop use. Including, but not limited to: RedHat, Ubuntu, SUSE, Slackware, Debian(my favorite), Mandriva, and most associated variants.

Now that is out of the way. Here is some notable advice from experience.

1. A new release of ANY software, no matter how many times it was alpha or beta tested before release, will have unexpected bugs. This includes using new kernel releases!

2. I have always been skeptical of simply "upgrading" a fully configured operating system. The best way is to always back up everything. Don't forget the config files in your "~/home" and "/etc" directories. And then perform a "clean Install". Wipe the drive, and start fresh. This will reeeeally help in reducing the number bugs you may encounter. At least you will know it wasn't a confilct from the previous version. Which can wreak a lot of havoc in some cases.

3. Early adopters of new OS releases will ALWAYS experience bugs.

If you are a newbie, go back to your previous version and wait for some of the major bugs to be resolved first.

If you are technically experienced with Linux(Ubuntu) then stop complaining to the blogs and keep sending Ubuntu those bug reports. It's important so they can be addressed in a timely manner.

Early adopting a new release is NOT for newbies or the faint-of-heart.

Eventually the bugs in "Karmic Koala" will be worked out. Be patient.

And before anyone is "quick to judge" a Linux distribution.. M$ has its own buggy history: Win3.0, Win95a, WinME, Vista. Win7 will and already has coughed up a few of its own major bugs.

Regular users of Ubuntu, be patient.

Experienced, technical Ubuntu users, Send Ubuntu Those Bug Reports.

The Vatican

The ones, historically, condemning the views of some of the greatest scientific minds.. Nikolas Capernicus, Charles Darwin, Galileo, etc.

Only now, due to public pressure, are admitting to forgiving some of their views. The ones, who long ago, made a significant contribution to innovative torture methods for those comdemned of heresy.

The ones that bury their heads in the sand whenever the possibility of the truth disagrees with their own archaic beliefs. The Vatican is a museum of the darker side of human history. I don't suppose certain parts of the Vatican that used to be old dungeons and confession torture chambers are on the main tour for visitors.

If it runs software, it probably has a default password somewhere. Mostly, in Operating Systems, Security based software(i.e. ssh, firewalls, anti-virus, content filters, etc).

The software in Network Routers (wired or wireless), DSL Modems, VPN hardware, AND YES.. Mobile Phones are just a few fine examples.

Failure to change the default password for your device/pc, or the software within it, will at some point teach you a very disturbing lesson about security.

The Irrelevance of The FRA and others like them...

While I would certainly shake the hands of those responsible for DDOS attack, It is important to remember that it doesn't matter if you own a "digital" device or not. We live in the digital age. The "freedom" in the digital world is just as important as in the analog world. We must fight for it every single day. There will always be those who would dare to pry into our personal lives. It will always be "us" and "them".

Everytime you pick up a phone, access your bank account, use your debit or credit card, use your vehicle's GPS system for directions.. someone is monitoring those actions. The more people realize this and resent it, the more they will resist the prying eyes of big-brother. The more alternatives the people will turn to.

In some respects, there are some upsides to this. The "TOR" network is already a fine example of this. In the future, and even now, more complex cryptographic schemes are being developed to keep out or at least slow down big-brother entities. The fight over how much control can be applied to human communication has become visible. At least to the Swedish government. The lines in the digital world are being drawn...

That's before they're fully fueled and armed. Right?

From experience, Florida & South Texas both have their fair share of reptiles. More than most of the other states. However, Snake encounters of this magnitude are so rare, it's usually reserved for the back page of some local newspaper. Lethal encounters are extremely rare and are usually reserved for alligators and crocodiles.

Poisonous snakes, usually shorter than your leg, in wooded areas and far out rural areas are the guilty parties in most injury or death cases. And that's only because the snake was acting out of defense.

As for the two researchers at the US Geological Survey, they should be tested again for drugs and signs of schizophrenia. Because they definately failed all of the previous tests.
