"I'm just wondering if they've considered what will be slightly higher in orbit at the planned time - they're sure to miss (they are Americans) and those missiles will keep going until they hit something!" - anonymous coward.

We be dumb americuns, buts our guns is really gooder than y'alls.

Forth Bridge painters to down brushes in 2012

Shrink wrap, I tell ya!

Just wrap the whole damn thing in plastic and apply heat. Turns it into a nice water proof tunnel plus the tension of the plastic will strengthen the bridge and keep any pieces from falling off.

Hey! At least let me get my coat before you rush me out the door!

New Jersey bans sex offenders from the web

Casting such a wide net

Always catches innocent people. It is unenforcible and no matter how heinous some of these people are, painting them all with the same brush is not justice. If a 19 year old meets a 17 year old on my space, they meet and get nasty, the 19 year old is guilty of statutory rape. He should be banned for life?

Draconian?

I suspect this will not survive court challenge. The internet touches too many aspects of our lives. Not allowing any use except for a few exceptions essentially bars a person from participation in the culture at large. They will have to find another way to deal with this problem.

Good times

What's all the ruckus for? I'm just glad to see Balmer's ass getting chapped. I hoped his office staff bolted down all the chairs before he heard about this.

Blame the yanks.

I'm sure it's George Bush's fault.

Self-respect?

Perhaps no self-respecting man would drink Budweiser or Carlsberg, but I'm sure the plan is drink the Guinness first, then you'll be sloshed enough that self-respect doesn't matter. On to the Bud ...

I'm not qualified ...

Unless surfing counts. Maybe some day I'll see this guy in the water. But I know just enough math and have just enough knowledge of cosmology to find this fascinating. The politics of science too often gets in the way of new ideas. So it's also fascinating to watch that play out.

Drink rats' milk, suggests battling Heather Mills

Violate the laws of physics. Save the planet.

What the concept of switching to rat or dog milk fails to address is that a unit volume of ANY milk takes more energy to produce than is gained. So instead of giant farms of cow grain, with huge ponds of manure, a dog milk economy will require huge kibble factories and create mountains of dog poop. And at least cow poop can be recycled as fertilizer. Dog poop is, well, shall we say, a significant materials handling problem.

Dell's dance with Ubuntu: True love or farce?

Harry Home Owner ...

It sounds like Ubuntu works well enough until something out of the ordinary happens. Then you have to look under the hood and get your hands dirty with OS level stuff. At first blush, it would seem this fact would push our friend Harry into the waiting arms of Microsoft. But anybody that works in IT realized long ago that if a they can't print, the typical user calls for help FIRST. They don't read the documentation, they don't try to diagnose the problem. They want somebody else to fix it. Even if the fix is plugging it back into the wall socket. So what difference does it make if they guy they call to fix the printing issue is a Linux Penguin or Microsoft fanboi. They don't care. When the computer geek leaves, the printer works. When somebody has a computer problem, they call ME. Even when I'm not at work. I'm a systems integrator, not a PC Tech. But they think "Hey! Bob knows computers. He can fix it" and they ring me up. If Dell can get a system that runs out of the box and does what people expect and sell it for less money than a Windows system, people will buy it. And when it doesn't work, they will call me.
