I believe we also need linux to automatically collect and send telemetry data to Microsoft. Strictly for troubleshooting purposes. :)

Microsoft Edge goes homomorphic: Nobody will see your credentials... but you'll need to sign in to use it

Tomislav

On the plus side, it will work on macOS.

I am sure those two Edge on MacOS users will appreciate the feature. :)

Apple's M1: the fastest and bestest ever silicon = revolution? Nah, there's far more interesting stuff happening in tech that matters to everyone

Re: I fear that too much shiny is taking a toll on some people's attention span.

He is not talking about moving data to the GPU. Moving data is meant between computers and/or data storage. For example having the fastest CPU in the world will not give you faster Netflix streaming, network DB access, better looking TikTok videos etc. It might reduce your wait to render said video, but uploading it will still take the same time as it would on a 10 year old Core Duo.

Good news: Boffins have finally built room-temperature superconductors. Bad news: You'll need a laser, a diamond anvil, and a lot of pressure

Hydrogen-powered train tested on Britain's railway tracks as diesel alternative

Re: Not as green as 25kv overhead

Maybe, but you can produce hydrogen using green energy (wind and solar) whenever available, while for a 25kV line you need something more reliable and available 24/7.

How do you solve a problem like Privacy Shield? US and EU policymakers kick off discussions

Tomislav

Re: Store data in the EU

Exactly, we only know what Microsoft (and others) have released publicly. We cannot know what happened behind the scenes and how many requests they decided to silently comply with.

Tomislav

Re: Store data in the EU

No, it does not, because CLOUD act (mentioned in the article) gives US TLAs access to all the data held by US companies anywhere in the world, including EU.

Pay ransomware crooks, or restore the network? Guess which way this city chose after weighing up the costs

Tomislav

Re: Ah IT 'managers'

Remember the recent attack against Garmin. A group called Evil Corp encrypted their infrastructure, demanding $10m. The problem with this group is that it was illegal for Garmin to pay up, so they paid a third party to "deal with the issue", and that company paid the crims. Making these payments illegal will result in similar deals.

Vodafone CEO: We will elbow Chinese firm Huawei from our European core networks

5 years?

So they will simply wait until the equipment has reached it's usual EOL and then replace it with something not made by Huawei. Sounds sensible, but I fail to see where is the 200m cost since this is something they would do anyway...

Boffins blow hot and cold over li-ion battery that can cut leccy car recharging to '10 mins'

Tomislav

Not much left then...

Don't expect to see this in mobiles because they don't have the required cooling. Unless you are willing to let your mobile phone preheat itself to 60 degrees C and then wait a couple of hours for it to cool to room temperature this will have no impact in your daily life.

Recharging a car in 10 minutes will have enormous power requirements, the infrastructure and production to support this on a mass scale is just not there yet and might not be within the next 10 to 20 years. Remember, electricity needs to be produced somehow and then brought to the recharging station. Recharging a Tesla to 80% in 10 minutes will require about half a megawatt of power, now imagine a recharging station in the middle of the desert with a dozen cars recharging at the same time...

WD's Purple reign continues: 12TB helium disks for vid spy tech

Tomislav

Re: Helium

Unfortunately using vacuum is not an alternative because that would require a much stronger (read: thicker) casing, which in turn would reduce the available space for platters. Remember, you are limited by the 3.5" HDD case size. Filling the interior with helium helps keep the pressure difference to a minimum.

Apple takes $9m kick down under after bricking iPhones

Tomislav

Perhaps, but Apple could have just warned people that the replacement screen is a potential security risk. Outright disabling phones with 3rd party replacement screens is going too far. People should have the right to do the wrong thing, it is their security after all, not Apples.

Huawei Honor 8 Pro: Makes iPhone 7 Plus look a bit crap

Tomislav

Re: Only the imminent OnePlus flagship is likely to give it any competition?

I was being sarcastic. This Huawei model has just about matched the performance of the old 3T model (apart from the higher resolution screen and a bit stronger battery).

Tomislav

Only the imminent OnePlus flagship is likely to give it any competition?

Imminent here means last years' 3T model? Since that model had 6GB of RAM and 128GB of flash at a lower price point I can only see Huawei trying to catch up...

I doubt this has anything to do with code audit. This looks like a standard vulnerability, probably found by a customer who used some sort of network vulnerability scanner or some other piece of software which used the all zero MAC address causing his switch to crash.
