Continued lack of women in tech bemoaned by ex-techie lady MP

Re: All women short lists - Craigness

Where I live the opposition party has gone down this route, she seems a bit useless, council manager, being really hyped up by her party.

Currently got a chap whose father was the MP in the 70s and is also the only political person to door to door in the last 5 years.

Re: Till operators

I would not say menial, possibly boring, but a good source of income for students and without insulting them people whose partner is the major wage earner (eg part time mums on tills.)

My wife always gets chatting with them, till staff appreciate it.

And they hate the till messages more than us!

MJI Silver badge

All women short lists

Stupid idea - you just get the worst. Look at the so called Blair babes.

Make it open to best PERSON.

Just to annoy the inadequates who like these short lists, how come a woman became Prime Minister without them, and women chosen using them have been invariably useless.

I am very in favour of EQUAL opportunities as the best person not the best man / woman / alien / teapot ect

Re: Automatic tills?

Horrible things, tried a few.

I was recommended to use one to save queueing.

Take your item and wave it, doesn't register or you have to put it in a certain spot, next item ignored because I hadn't done something else. Look stupid piece of junk I put item in front of scanner then the next, anything else I am not interested in.

I just abandoned and queued for a human - it was quicker.

Just get stuffed automatic till, much quicker to use a checkout person, their scanners just beep and let them get on with it. You can talk to them if you want.

Argos - would not let me order an item - had to go to till so why bother.

B&Q rejected my card, normal till took it.

I make a point now of NOT using them, if I want to buy something without human interaction I will buy on line

There isn't the excitement

One thing MS are missing is the excitement, with the Sony reveal there has been this under current until we saw the demo and still it is there.

We are not seeing it with the Nextbox, we should be.

Re: Exactly WHO do used game sales benefit?

Bad comparison

You buy a Ford, it needs parts, you get them from Ford, they get more money from you.

You buy a MP game, it takes up server space, the previous owner also takes up server space, this costs the game publisher.

Re: Easy to do

Your list is missing a powerful handheld with a few really good games. The Vita, I see you have the PSP.

OK I am playing PSP games on mine, but Unit13 is fun, as is UC GA.

We have a few here

Megadrive, SNES, Dreamcast, PS2, Wiiiiiiiii, PS3, Gameboy, DS x 2, PSP, Vita x 3.

Interesting that no-one is bothered about the Wiii-U

I don't mind some, as long as I have a code reader.

Re: Rev counter

Ever jumped off a bike and into a car, put it this way it wasn''t until I drove one with a rev counter I found that I was revving high mileage 1300cc Astras to 8000rpm. It was still accelerating and was not revving too hard - for a biker.

When I got to cars I had an old push rod lumped thing 6000rpm red line, but when fitted with the correct cam and springs safe to about 7000rpm (sports model was known for this red line lower than maximum power). So I would happily take my ancient 1600cc hatch to 6500rpm, jumped into the same size engine Sierra, err why was the red line so low, I would have red lined it so easily?

Rev counters are usefull when driving vehicles with substantially lower rev bands than your own vehicle.

Re: A real driver's car...

Thinking about it I think the most basic I have had of any use was pair of clocks, blue light for main beam and orange light for indicator, nothing else. Apart from a moped which had nothing but a speedo, so don't count that.

Re: A real driver's car...

Hmm bulb warning systems are nice.

I did like the gear indicator on a motorbike.

Less though is better. But rev counter essential.

As long as it is BMG staff go ahead, do what you want, just leave the rest alone, most people actually like Kaz and co.

BTW lets blame Simon Cowell, he will do.

MJI Silver badge

Re: Remind me

No it isn't it is because the idiots in the music side did it over the heads of head office. Sony music needs culling not Sony corp.

Sony Computer Entertainment is totally different to the home of Simon Cowell, it is actually respected for a start.

Perhaps people are fed up of people having a go at SCE? (? = A E or J), for the crimes of BMG and Columbia. This is where greed beat the traditional quality thing.

BTW I have no BMG music. Yet I have Naughty Dog products.

Feature removal in newer versions keeps XP going

Too many features have been removed from Vista and 7 from XP, for SOME users.

Full screen DOS support is important for SOME people (removed in Vista - WHY?), Netbios is important for SOME people. (removed in 7 - WHY?)

These are two I thought of without looking up.

Re: What piracy ?

Sales

Actually I would put a big seller way ahead on Steam than a non-blockbuster seller on a console.

The sheep who have consoles always buy CoD and Fifa, never the decent games, you dare to suggest they buy a decent game they think you are mad. I have had the argument, told them the facts, they had not played so automatically not interested, I hate this type of gamer*. The really good games do tend to sell better on Steam than console, as an example a good PS3 exclusive will sell about a quarter of a CoD or Fifa but is so much better as a game.

Sheep on PC I would say get no further than Facebook.

So in sales I would say

Sheep console games top

Steam top sellers second

Decent console games third

Non Steam PC good sellers below that.

* They mentioned the 2 games I said quite simply you NEED to try other games, and listed Uncharted for PS3 and Halo for XBox as two series they should try, otherwise there was no point what so ever buying a console.

Re: Move controllers

Have you actually tried them?

I have, I know what I can do with them, and I am only average, I know how good some other players are, in fact if there was cross platform play and the game was well enough set up, I would actually bet on on of a small number of players who are phenomemal with Move, against KBM players.

MJI Silver badge

Re: Publishers...

I have plenty of platform exclusives, a few are system sellers, got a well known racing game, possibly the best third person shooter/action adventure series, a couple of good FPS series, some platformers.
