4K-ing excellent TV is on its way ... in its own sweet time, natch

Re: On being slowly boiled alive with video standards

Digital Terrestrial depended on

Your TV & decoder

Where you live

When

I have seen DTTV which was as good as a good DVD, I have seen DTTV as good as a video CD.

Where you live, my digital reception was better than my analogue - same aerial

TV Anamorphic widescreen is prefereable to letterboxing, RGB usually bypasses artificial sharpening. My last TV had pretty shocking sharpening that I actually considered physically disabling it. It was disabled in movie mode so I used that for video tapes, everything else used carefully set up personal. BUT RGB sources were DVD, PS2, DTTV PVRs, and the TV tuner was internally RGB, so I just never bothered.

The decoder in my TV was also very good, but the TV basically wore out and was also not 8K compliant, sold due to wanting HD.

Early bitrates were higher than today.

eBay promises to refund seller fees after latest MASSIVE OUTAGE

Re: @MJI I would move like a shot

I up costs to cover paypal as well, but I prefer of all things a crispy tenner.

But then I have managed to wangle a paypal business account with debit card.

Ebay once decided it needed a card as well as paypal just in case paypal was empty. I set up Ebay to use my paypal card.

Unfortunately I could not set up paypal to accept the paypal card!

MJI Silver badge

I would move like a shot

For a site with

1) Not so steep fees.

2) Does not put fees on postage rates (I add 20% to cover these!)

3) Does not down mark sellers for stupid buyers (had 5 in a couple of months could not read advert, title, nor the big imformation box in the middle)

4) Has a better search.

5) Does not make it unaffordable for the small seller of cheap items, (no profit on a 99p sale)

6) If there is a feedback system allow you to leave negative feedback for buyers.

I used to sell lots of crud on Ebay (old burger toys ect) for small amounts of money, now it is cheaper to charity bag the lot.

I still do a service on Ebay but not sold one in a week or two despite good feedback, market saturated by big sellers.

Re: As a Borderlands fan I have some questions about the loot system

Loot is per player. One fix over Borderlands.

MJI Silver badge

Enjoying it

Still only on the Earth and Moon, trying to level up, keep doing random missions for XP and Valour points.

Quite a lot of my friends list are on it.

The ability to save random players is good, as are the special events.

The maps are pretty big and complex, I still get lost in the Russia map.

A pop up map would be nice, one you earn like in Borderlands 2.

Now as to its single player longevity, hmm better than quite a few games, but less than a good RPG eg Fallout 3/NV, and it still is not as good as Borderlands for fun. 3 classes, 3 species, 2 sexes.

Co-op is good if they do not run off while you are looting.

Writing is OK but nowhere as good as say Naughty Dog.

Solid 7/10 game.

Enemy AI is not great, Most places you can hide behind cover, they respawn quickly for farming.

Inspirations I have found are looting and fire teams, Borderlands. Drop in co-op Journey, general feel Starwars.

Re: It's unlikely to improve - AceRimmer

Well it is cheaper to add Linux to a Windows PC than Windows to a Linux PC.

What was interesting was that a P4 booted into XP struggled to run 1 game, rebooted into Mint 15 and it ran fine.

Linux is the ONE platform you can add for free!

MJI Silver badge

Re: It's unlikely to improve

Porting from the PS3 version of a game would be even worse than porting from the PC version.

I was not on about porting from PS3 (although that seemed to be quite common in the last few years) but about the fact if there is a PS version there is already non DX code there. So if you have code already written for other platforms adding yet another would not be a show stopper.

As I mentioned only 3 platforms currently supported use Direct X, Windows (XP to 8), And the two most recent DirectXBoxs 360 and 1. One of those platforms is HUGE, but it is only one platform.

MJI Silver badge

Re: It's unlikely to improve

I think otherwise.

People are starting to get pissed off with Windows, they want alternatves. As to coding, in the console world they are already handing different APIs and OSes.

How much work to move from a version on BSD (Most well known gaming versions being CellOS and Orbis OS, as well as Vita OS and Apples OS.) using an API influenced by OpenGL, to Linux with OpenGL?

So if there is a Playstation version as well as a Windows version, it will not be a huge job to go Linux.

The gaming engines are almost all multi platform (excluding the first party engines from the likes of Naughty Dog & co) So when the engine you use goes Linux most of the work is done.

To be honest Direct X and the Windows platform is a minority among the amount of platforms, just that a lot of people own one of the three.

I have filmed gigs previously, so understand her issues.

Many years ago.

A single tripod mounted decent video camera near the back can do a surprisingly good job.

Well over one hour single shot, some panning and zooming, but it is watchable, now the only material existing of that band. I shot over the top of the audience.

I am so glad there was no such thing as phone cameras then, that would have ruined the gig..

People who had portable video recorders generally knew how to use them.

Wobbles and stupid aspect ratios should not be tolerated.

As to watching, I would not remember it half as well as if I had not videoed it, even if most of the time I was watching directly and just glancing at the view finder.

Of all the concerts I remember well, they are the ones I videoed, the one I did the lighting, the one I photoed for them. Two bands both seen too many times.

Even the low fi linear mono sound track is liked, it was not THAT bad, but was useable.

There are many good reasons for rectangled tabs, there are many good reasons for title bars and fielk Edit menus.

I do want the internal fixes but I don't want a ghastly GUI.

MJI Silver badge

Why is FF trying to become Chrome?

Look Mozilla, if we wanted our browser to look like Chrome we would install it.

Currently on 28 at work as I got Australised at home and I cannot stand it. Even with the removal tool it still looks shoddy.
