HP slaps dress code on R&D geeks: Bin that T-shirt, put on this tie

HP Parking

Now I would have let rip as I cannot for the life of me safely reverse OUT of a spot, reverse in yes, but out no.

I have reversed into spots since I passed my car test.

Last time I had to reverse out I nearly crushed a little car someone had parked behind me!

Cheating

A common one I found was glitching off the map and sniping from a distance. I once got a really good kill streak along with a Medic with revive, hiding under cover from the glitchers, catching them as they attempted to glitch from their spawn.

I died once (thanks Medic) but ruined their cheating game.

I just hated losing, was more often on the winning team.

And women played, and were treated the same, and we knew they were women and good. One was playing with her husband (tell by PSN names).

I did not mind being beaten by good players, but cheaters annoyed me.

A few thoughts about this

Obsolescence

My previous CRT woul dhave been obsolete after DSO, but I sold it to a Sky user for £50, not bad for a 10 year old CRT.

This an expensive TV with superb picture quality, flat WS tube with arperure grill, and a rather good digital tuner.

The manufacturer kept it well supported for 5 years, dealing with BBC scrrew ups on service numbers, Ondodgy CAM support £3 PM for 15 channels.

Eventually HD called too hard.

But just after I sold it I found it was not DSO compliant.

Anyway the replacement was trying to be smart, runs Linux, but AFAIK not updated recently, smart was view photos via USB, but no problems there, nice easy menu, resembles the same companies games console at the time, also why I wanted HD.

So for smart features lets look at what is plugged into the TV, a games console with BluRay playback, and LOTS of streaming services, recently joined by its replacemment model.

So the semi smart TV is not updated, but the slightly older box is still updated,

Hmmmm

Now Andriod.

Not sure if I would want it on a TV. My TV riuns Linux fine, my PVR runs Linux fine, both have decent enough UIs and no involvement from 3rd parties.

The consoles run forks of BSD, but have lots of support and supported applications, applications running from 50GB games to BBC IPlayer.

So my advice is ignore the TV Smart features and plug in a decent Freeview.HD / Freesat HD PVR

and a well supported games console.

Why games consoles?

PLENTY of support.

Plenty of grunt.

Not likely to get plug pulled as there are 10s of millions out there.

"BBC Cancelled it."

"So they cancel my favourite sport, a fun fantasy series and an interesting SciFi series?"

"Yes. And now the shocker."

"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Why do we need the BBC?"

"Exactly."

Re: ECUs and Injectors

I have come across ECUs having the injectors coded to it, as there were a range of tolerances and these were used to improve fueling

MJI Silver badge

Re: As I've commented previously (Lucrelout)

Gearboxes are better with an ECU, compare a modern controlled torque converter box with a 1960s or 70s version.

Often VERY similar boxes, but computer control enables learning, alternate shift patterns, different maps for different engines.

MJI Silver badge

Re: 2000 TD5 Defender

But you have the important ECU for the engine, and that is it.

Anyway who cares about the windows and the like when you have a fun engine under the bonnet.

For the people who do not understand here goes.

Apart from ECUs failing (buy a spare coded to your injectors) only a crank sensor can stop the engine.

Yes the engine looms may seep oil (keep a spare injector loom) sometimes the injector seals leak, (keep spares). But there is not much to stop his Land Rover. And it has a modern engine with excellent performance.

Oh and I paid as much for my late Discovery 2 as some people paid for Discovery 3s. My car is easier to work on and has less electronic gumpf to go wrong and I still have at least 5 ECUs!

MJI Silver badge

My PC works, and I have better things to spend money on

I did run a routine to see what could be installed, but too many games will not run on 8.x/10 according to it. (eg Half Life) Also something missing from the CPU.

I _PAID_ for XP Pro on my PC, it still works well after a full rebuild a few years ago with a quad core CPU.

My PC still works fine, apart from Linux I have to buy an OS AGAIN, but I have paid for an OS and the one I have works.

So people think I have to abandon paid for games, working PC hardware, for OSes which are strange (8.x and 10) or near end of life (7), or require all software replaced (Linux).

Well I am going to see who long my PC lasts with firewall, AV, and being carefull, off site backups of any important data and see where it goes.

I have been burnt by paying for OSes, deliberate EOL, removal of too many features, so stuff it Mint here I come. Oh and carry on the WINE experiments.

Samsung caught disabling Windows Update to run its own bloatware

Re: Windows updates I can understand their viewpoint

Because I did not know what it had done, so I looked it up on the internet, on a PC with a working network connection.

You see not everyone is an expert in operating systems, to me they are a tool, and nothing else, as long as they do not annoy me (and many do) and I can run what I like I am happy.

But I have been working in the world of Xbase now for around 30 years.
