Microsoft: You liked Windows 10 so much, you'll get 2 more in 2017

MJI Silver badge

Well I have a dual boot PC, a few yours old now as it was built pre win 7, so of course original boot is XP, new boot is a latest version of Linux.

When XP is unusable (still fine in the real world courtesy of firewall, Windows embedded registry change, and a good AV) I will just go Linux. No point going newer Windows as they keep killing older software.

I really overspecced the PC (quad core, TB HDDs) and Linux runs as well as XP.

Everything about 10 puts me off, as long as I can surf web, connect to work, store photos and edit video I will be fine.

Games, abandoned PC games, not worth keep updating, it runs HL2 very well that is good enough for me.

Consoles play games well, on the telly, in their own environment. No messing with drivers, no having to use Microsoft and their constant redesigns.

Lagers

Czech lagers

Been some changes recently, noticed that Staropraman now is a generic lager.

But here is my lager advice

Premium, try Budvar, still their own company and good lager

Cheap, French lagers in small bottles from supermarkets, slake your thirst, cheap, and not bad at all. Tesco usually have lots. Not premium at all but VFM is pretty good.

Hmmmmmmmmm

I am sure that years ago Stella was different to today, now it is a generic Lager

But the ones they are merging, not sure if it would matter, most are just generics or poor quality US pop.

Why don't MS just shut down Sky?

As they actually have so much money*, surely they could find a way to bankrupt Sky, or even better News International.

Re: Transfer those tapes

I transfered about 20 or so camera tapes to PC, quality was not that bad, well it was good enough for some to be used on a retail DVD of a preserved railway a couple of years ago.

All played back on a 1982 portable

MJI Silver badge

Another Beta advantage, it stripped out Macrovision, I used to use it to copy rental DVDs pre burners

Sanyo

Hmm just like Sony then, bought in their Vhs rubbish rather than make their own.

As I have a few Sony and Sanyo made decks, the build quality of the 1980s decks was so much higher.

I managed to avoid the Vhs era, I did have one, but only for duplication. My work horse was a Sanyo M40 (still working) a Beta Hifi deck, my special machine a Sony SL-HF950 Superbeta deck.

Timeline was, watched Beta rentals, lost job, new job, mortgage, got some money, oh look brand new format called DVD. All along recording TV using those 2 Beta decks.

I have no pleasant memories of using Vhs, it was always that crappy format other people bought.

I still remember seeing someones edit master Vhs-Vhsand wondering why it looked worse than my final copy Beta->Superbeta->Beta

I enjoyed Starship Troopers film

Even swapped my DVD for free from Flipper to RSDL, even copied to video tape while it was being swapped.

A really enjoyable and well made film, nothing like the original story, but good enough to stand on its own feet.

If you hate it, I don't mind, I just like the cheesiness of it, and the overblown ridiculousness. Yes I did notice a very authortarian rule. But the use of not very well known actors and actresses stopped it becoming a vehicle for actor X.

BTW a tape copy was actually pretty good, much much better than any retail tape, worst thing was surround sound was downgraded to Prologic from 5.1.

Actually that tape was one of my best recordings ever. Showed how much better the loser in the video tape war was than the winner.

Re: A bit harsh

Funny but I loved the original series, grew to like the Picard series a lot.

Enjoyed DS9, Voyager was quite good, but a bit messy.

Enterprise was a good series with a few odd story choices.

The films were a right mish mash, but Voyage Home was the funniest by a long way. But TOS films were prefereable to STNG films.

I think long term ARM will be safe and stay in the UK.

Why?

Because they are being bought by a Japanese company and not an American one. The assets are the workforce and you cannot easily move them. The Japanese do seem to like doing business in the UK.

Ad blockers responsible for rise in upfront TV ad sales, claims report

MJI Silver badge

Re: Some of the web players are getting bad

Thing is it does show the ad videos then not show the programme, ABP was disabled on that domain.

So how come I see the ads and not the programme?

And yes torrents are the answer.

shITV help actually say you have to uninstall, good job it is only crap daytime shows which my wife could miss that normally get lost.

MJI Silver badge

Some of the web players are getting bad

And shitv are worst.

My wife likes a couple of their programmes, and occasionally due to scheduling changes, or too many things at once she misses them.

So power up a games console, BBC, C4, C5, and lots more but no shitv, why? They want mobile users not people on TVs.

Try computer, shows the adverts then will not show the show without UNINSTALLING adblocker from the PC, regardless of browser.

I got so ratty I reported them to various places including here and an official UK web watchdog (illegally inspecting my PC), well might as well mess them up.

Anyone have some greasemonkey scripts to sort this out?

End result has been that the last shitv programme I watched was Downton Abbey, so 1 series ina year because their channel is too painfull is ridiculous.

And yes I used to watch ATV a lot when I was younger, remember TISWAS?

I am watching less and less TV now, just annoys me too much.

MJI Silver badge

Re: Anyone know..

I do not watch films on ITV, a shitty little itv in the corner sees to that.

If its a film on ITV, I want to watch there are torrent sites for that.

MJI Silver badge

Re: Want people to watch your ads.

With hobby based forums often the adverts are very directed, at the users, you have the manufacturers, the shops, the magazines, all exciting you, then get blocked.

The advertisers are often small businesses with 1 to 5 employees, trying to tell us about their latest thing, but then the move to a dodgy server scuppers it for all of us.

Most hobby forums run adverts the users actually want.

Most general forums get adblocked.

MJI Silver badge

Re: Want people to watch your ads.

But they were not mentioned in the dead ads, just the link I showed, I have loads in HOSTS

Re: Want people to watch your ads.

MJI Silver badge

Want people to watch your ads.

Make better ads.

Oh and a forum I used to like ads on (VERY relevant) has gone to a blocked ad server not allowed out of any of my hosts,

I made a point of telling them too

Quite a few other posters are also of the same opinion. A lot of us block adserver.adtech.de.
