Sony PlayStation Vita sales crawl

Re: Show me the games

Stuff Mario - annoying little plumber - never been a fan, prefered blue hedgehogs but mainly early FPS.

I'd say Nathan Drake is more of a pull for adults than the above annoying plumber.

Finances are the restrictor at the moment, otherwith UC:GA would be mine.

When we get a Vita Killzone Mercenary will be ours too.

Need to get two then.... arghhhh three

Re: Citizen Kaned

I made Commander in Chief two weeks ago.

Now playing just for fun rather than concentrating on levelling.

I reckon about one third to one half of high level (top 5000) players uses Move.

We use slightly different techniques, and it is easier to shoot while sidestepping.

Still playing 2011 games

I am still playing catchup with my games, 2012 has not been as good as 2011.

Trying to finish not the last Assassins Creed game but the one before, one of my boys bought Skyrim but it doesn't excite me at all.

The most recent release I have enjoyed was Uncharted 3!!!!

Also I am fed up of Move knocking, it works incredibly well in FPSs, I will not buy a FPS on console without Move support now, pity there are only 2 decent Move supported FPSs, and only one has a decent multiplayer.

Scarily bad compared to the opposition.

Poor front suspension, cart spring rear suspension

I much prefered the Avenger in that market place, good suspension, great seats, tough well designed 1600 pushrod lump with 8 port head and well oversquare.

Why the Steam hate?

It works, it works well and has good games on it

MJI Silver badge

Re: Gabe!

Steam - yes I like it, easy to buy games and get them updated, installation was trivial.

As to a MS market place with games - will it have such games as Half Life saga on it?

Just look at the top end studios, how many of them use digital distribution? Basically for good games you find 90% of them on Steam (Valve, some EA and others).

Other major studios are mainly console based, and disc based, so you would never see games from the like of Naughty Dog on MS market place.

I decided a while ago that if I build another PC for home to use Linux.

Big biz 'struggling' to dump Windows XP

MJI Silver badge

Re: Dinosaurs companies

Idiot!

It takes that long to develop a system. Are you saying a system should be rewritten every 5 years then dumped?

OK I am now going to scare you!

I have converted code between languages, currently 3 or 4 generations.

I changed a lot of BCPL to Clipper about 18 years ago, this took me a couple of days search and replace worked very well.

When looking at Window I reconverted the same code again twice in fact.

Alaska XBase++ was easy, but we found it difficult to develop in - at the time screens were design then compile with no route back, a nightmare to maintain.

We then used what we should have started with Visual Objects, so there you go code well over 20 years old - so older than you!

Re: Run any where as long as....

As before we need to use a VGA graphic mode - we use it to increase the amount data on the screen, also to provide some graphics such as shape drawing.

And then there is the IP interlayer, uses a 32bit Windows conversion layer as there was no DOS IP stack, IPX was native (and faster).

The client server database we used originated as a Netware reindexing routine then became the DOS languages best database, now available on all 3 PC server platforms, and for most Windows languages and ONE DOS language.

I expect you can guess this is a set of Clipper applications, I think there will be working Clipper applications in 20 years still working.

Database - the only successfull DBF based one Advantage Xbase Database Server.

IE6 for when it is needed - everything else Firefox, my last XP work PC still has IE6 but it is nerver used

Re: We have customers

However the users have to stop at XP

Vista - no full screen DOS mode, ours uses 30 line VESA mode

7 - no Netbios, ours uses a client server database, this means no communications.

They are happy - don't want to spend a lot on the Windows application

MJI Silver badge

Who are still using dos applications.

They do not want to upgrade as they are happy with it and do not want to move - or pay to move.

Luckily we use the same database for both

With HD TV at 1440x1080i and most BD at 1920x1080p it seems silly to restrict these TVs, upscale SDTV, downscale HDTV, BluRay, and almost everything else, suitable for some games I suppose.

My TV upscales 1440x1080 to 1920x1080 fine

Why British TV drama is crap – and why this matters to tech firms

MJI Silver badge

BBC now get shot down for trying

eg Outcasts - was quite good, I would have watched S2

new Survivors - was OK, original was good AFAIR

It appears to be unless the ratings are good the programme gets pulled. Just remember the first series of Only Fools & Horses was a bit of a flop.

As to David Jason in everything - to me he will always be 75% Del Boy 25% Granville.

As to newer programmes - I do like Moffatts work Sherlock is good, but not enough, I liked Jeckyl, DW is variable but "Blink" is a classic.

I was amazed ITV did Downton Abbey - not lowbrow enough for them I thought, no shouty presenters, I generally dislike ITV programmes in recently years.

MJI Silver badge

Re: British TV drama is NOT crap

Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes, possibly the best drama of the last decade.

Thanks for reminding me of Hustle

Sherlock is great, talking of how about the better episodes of Doctor Who.

Downton is good at what it does.

So possibly the best drama of the last decade, the best episode of a SciFi series, both British

I have a home deck a Walkman and a car head unit (with 10 CD changer in boot).

My music storage is a ice cream tub full of MDs

MJI Silver badge

Re: How is it crippled?

Rememebr their history - it evolved.

They had CD Tape and MD Walkmans, the first HDD Walkmans were sort of based on the MD ones. MD uses ATRAC which sounds better than similar rate MP3, so the first HDs were basically using a HDD as a giant MD.

They finally went MP3 with AFAIR the HD5, and was at the time the audiophiles choice of PMP.

I own a MD Walkman, see no need to change to a MP3 player as I use it rarely.

Re:measmyself

Interesting, & good voice acting, well guess what.

Some of the best games of this generation have some of the best console graphics.

I still remember when I first played Uncharted 2, that ticks every box there is, only seen two console games with better graphics and one is Uncharted 3, good game but just doesn't have the same wow because the wow came with Uncharted 2 - that said the ships graveyard is absolutely fantastic.

Re: another PS3?

You are Barry Shitpeas and ICMFP

PS3 vs XBox360

Well from what I have read from various places

X360 has a better graphics chip which is better when used in a similar fashion to a PC game, but the PS3 can offload a LOT of processing to the Cell, which nullifies this when used in an Uncharted fashion.

The Cell is substatially more powerfull than the Xenon, and the interchip link between the Cell & RSX is a lot faster than the link between Xenon & Xenos.

It seems like PS3 is about 10% to 20% more powerfull than the 360, but unless you are Naughty Dog or Guerilla 360 is easier to exploit.

Holding back - yes I have seen it - example is Rage, this has two regions, with a slow transfer between them, this coincides with the 360 disc swap, would have been nicer as one area.

Poor PS3 ports - seen these too.

Multiplatforms looking good, yes they can, but seem to lack something compared to the best exclusives, best 3 so far in my opinion Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, Uncharted 2, and the quality of Killzone 3s multiplayer is something to behold, so much detail and such a fun game.
