>Imagine a world without religion, imagne the peace......

No way ! If there was no religion then all the bun fights between Intel/AMD fans, the Windoze/Linux sniping etc. would all become more important ! Face it, no matter how hard we try we just love to argue and bitch :)

Mind you, certain peoples devotion to the Church of Jobs would mean that the CoS would have an instant replacement :D

Strange moment

Got issued a nice shiny new HP Compaq laptop last week by my employers ( a well known telecoms company). On the underneath is a MS licence certificate thingy for Vista but what a suprise, it boots to XP !

XP or Vista, I really dont care, its better than the Win98 laptop I had up till then :)

>Apple has for years by default left all check boxes checked in it's Software Update application, it just seems Mac users don't get so dazzled and confused by it though, where as it seems wayyyy too complex for some Windows users to figure out though.

Yeah, confused about why Apple would want to update an app that isnt installed ? Two choices here, either

A) Apple are arrogant SOB's who want to force me to download Safari

or

B)Apples programmers are incompetent and cant write a couple of lines of code that would check for the presence of Sadfari

After my constant battles over the years with Quicktimes habit of trying to slip processes into the start up routines, Im forced to conclude A is the answer.

Intel: laptop/desktop crossover coming sooner than expected

@<no title> AC

>Not sure how skilled I'd be at building myself a laptop

Thats the point, its an end of an era where hombrews were fun and powerful and yet could be made for less than Dell etc.

Strictly utility from here on in, the next ten years will probably see the end of one of the most cherished aspects of home/soho computing e.g. the ability to tailor and build/customise the PC that suits you.

> just wondering what that better phone you mention is...

In my case, one which will run two essential apps properly, Memory Map and TomTom. But of course neither is available for the Jesus phone (or any other apps of worth come to think of it).

Anyway I thought the Iphoney's had run their course over this and were less defensive nowadays :)

Adobe launches 'free' Flash-only media player

Graham Lockley

Of the Troll...

Im afraid he is one of a very rare species, the platform-agnostic troll. As part of their rites of passage / coming of age / mating ritual they feel a compelling urge to prove that everyone else in the world is stupid/nerdy/misguided. Eventually the testes lower into a mature position and the hormonal imbalance is righted and they slowly adopt a fanbois colouration of their chosen platform, becoming indistinguishable from other NERDS. Enjoy this rare sight ladies and gentlemen.

On the other hand, his frequent use of the term 'nerd' could indicate that he is an O2 PR slug. :)

Varying Mileage

>Hitachi seem to me to be the most reliable drives around.

Just goes to show how personal bias/experience can colour these things.

After a bad experience of IBM/Hitachi drives repeatedly failing (and a few Samsungs too) I am loathe to touch either manufacturers drives .

Personal choice has always been for Maxtors with Seagate being second choice alongside WD.

The good thing is though, looking at the review, I am pleasantly suprised at how close they are to each other, we never had it so good :)

Mozilla plugs 10 security holes in Firefox

Graham Lockley

Huh ?

Such vituperation nowadays in the pages of the venomous Vulture !!

(Yeah I've been watching V for Vendetta again)

Personally FF and NoScript (don't use any other plugins) suit my browsing habits 90% of the time and don't seem to hog resources unduly.

Ive used Opera since the early days and like it lots but maybe I'm just too lazy to promote it from No.2 to No.1 on my machines (yea IE is third and when I get round to trying out Safari, possibly fourth)

@Phillip - 1/10 for that effort, troll school is turning out such poor graduates nowadays. 10,000 lines on my desk in the morning saying 'I must learn to troll in a more subtle manner'

Wii 2.1 sound system

Graham Lockley

Looks ok to me

@Adam

'most people have 5.1 surround systems now.'

I disagree, most people I know rely on whatever sound comes out of the TV. The people I do know with 5.1 are either film enthusiasts or fools who enjoy showing off toys they dont really understand/appreciate.

My grandaughter has a Wii and I may consider this set up as a gift because to an 11 year old it looks good and sounds better than the stereo sound from the tv.

@Liam

We arent all serious about sound, why do you think MP3's are so popular ? Good enough for whats needed.

Vista SP1 on track for mid-March release?

Graham Lockley

Fools rush in

Bitter experience of MS's previous Service Packs means I will be quietly sitting back and watching the forums etc. for news of which apps/drivers/hardware get broken by this pack. In about 6 months I will start to consider the option but not before and I will still continue to dual boot with XP. Take your time MS.

Apple tells iPhone vendors not to reveal sales figures

Graham Lockley

Wrong!

'With regard to the tariff, do those £35 a month tariffs, with the N95 (for example) free, include data. Err, no. You pay more for that.'

My T-mobile tariif (with Web n Walk) comes to £32 a month. In real terms, unlimited data usage (even to the point where I have actually used it as a modem for my lappy at times) along with more voice and MMS/texts than I can use in a month.

You may like the phone (after my 30 mins of playing with one the over all feel I got was 'Fischer-Price') but dont pretend the tarrif/bundle is anything less than a rip off.

Mobe snap murderers face justice

Graham Lockley

Here we go again

'hang the son of a bitch and good riddance'

Some moron kills someone in a particularly stupid/sadistic way and suddenly the hang em/ flog em brigade comes crawling out of the woodwork.

Two questions:

1. Does executing the murderer bring the victim back to life ?

Answer: Of course not, end result is two people dead rather than one

2.Does pardoning an innocent man who was executed make him feel happier ?

Answer: Of course it does, makes the Tyburn Jig seem like a happy dance.

Didnt take long for this thread to hit LaLa Land did it ?

As the old adage says, the only way to make a computer completely safe is to leave it turned off.

I dont care how often Apple fans and Linux fans say otherwise, its the obscurity of the OS that protects them most.

Fine looking phone

and Im sure its a joy to use but you want me to pay how much for it ? I have been on various contracts for more years than I care to think and had a slew of (at the time) very desirable phone/pda combos but never paid more than £100 (and that was for one phone only, most were a lot less). I will be out of contract in the next few months and O2 have as good a chance as the others of getting my custom. What they wont get is my name on any contract that involves that much of a premium for the handset alone. Stick it out for a maximum of £100 and I MIGHT consider it.

Still too much at half the price, £50-60 max with the ability to let me plunder Project Gutenberg and similar for the free texts and I would get one today. If this were to happen then I can see a future for the device but sadly I doubt it will.

Wii-like motion-control games to come to the PS2

Graham Lockley

@Anonymous Coward

'Hedley - you are the epitome of whats wrong with the current gaming market. photo realistic graphics does not a good game guarantee.'

I think you are missing the point here, the graphic quality wasnt mentioned, its the STYLE. I have to agree that a lot of the Wii's games are a little off putting simply because the graphical style is unpalatable, the gameplay may be superb but if the graphical style doesnt engage the player then it doesnt work for them.

Gene Simmons blames college kids for ruining music biz

Graham Lockley

What ?

Since when did Gene Simmons and music have anything to do with each other ?

Kiss were a perfect example of style over substance, most people cant name a Kiss song but when prompted will recall ' long tongue, big boots, make-up' etc.

Kiss would have died today because the music was never a strong point, it was all image, so Simmons tirade has no grounding in reality

Nintendo confirms Wii DVD support coming

Graham Lockley

To the PS3 owner...

'if it wasnt for wanting to finish zelda i dont think the wii would get used. after the initial 'oooh the controller is good' you realise its a step back in technology terms compared to PCs, ps3 and xb360'

I assume you are own from that statement (apologies if not). The Wii is selling (out) at the moment for two reasons.

1. Price : Recently overheard someone mutter and point at the PS3 (after being told there were no Wii's in stock) 'Im not paying that for a bloody games console'

2. Word of mouth : People are telling each other about how much fun they had with friends playing Wii games. These are what might be termed 'non-gamers' and in all likelihood, in a year or two the Wii will be gathering dust as the novelty has worn off.

Give the Wii the ability to play DVD movies though and it will continue to be used, with the chance of an odd game being bought increased.

In other words, why should HD manufacturers be allowed to count differently from all the other component makers !
