"Where does the US gov't have the right to determine what app a corporation should allow"
From that FDR guy, you remember, the President who bitch slapped the Supremes into being his personal arse lickers. In case you forgot, they can and will tell you exactly what to do and when to do it. If you would like to look it up kindly see Wickard v. Filburn and Gonzales v. Raich. Oddly enough, so many people are fooled into loving a guy who prolonged the depression far longer than necessary and robbed them of so many basic rights. But hey, he gave us So-So Security. I guess a switch in time does save nine but fucks the rest of us.
Not many could be fooled by these scams. There aren't perhaps but 4 people, rational ones anyway, who would actually open any message from or routed through the domain of any political party. If I could be on a "do not call" list that included political parties, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Come election season, the political pushers become bigger pests than cockroaches in Miami, pity you can't treat them the same way.
The only appropriate icon for the two party political cartel. "O Lord, bless this thy hand grenade, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy."
So much for the "rule of thumb" then. Although I suppose it is worse as a smaller cane can be swung faster and deliver more energy on impact due to the whole velocity squared thing.
That said, this kind of thuggery should end. The police there should take a view of how it works here. One of the big reasons people don't trust gubbermint is the police doing things wrong and getting a pass for it. When cops can do wrong without consequences, the citizenry doesn't see much reason why they shouldn't also. When it escalates to using fear and intimidation through video surveillance, you know the police have lost everything resembling goodwill with the public.
Finally, in the interest of bridging this social injustice, I hereby open my home to all female models, Malaysian or not. Come one, come all, come multiple times if you like. That's right ladies, there are plenty of rooms, no need to shove. Yes, just like a bridge, no canes, no morals, just weight limits.
So which is it then? a.) The older versions would stop working. b.) The copies they already have would stop working. c.) People might find out they don't need to upgrade after all.
Is it really an issue to ask for a file in 2003 format or even 97 for that matter? People ask me to resend files in different formats all the time. Sure you are bound to run into some dolt who can't figure out what "Save As" does but that must be rare by now.
As for MS, suck it in, stand tall and hand "eye for an eye" the license money. You can cry in your beer later.
Chris C is pretty much on the mark. You can check his numbers yourself. Simply go here:

plug in 02110 for the zip code, Boston. Then on the next page select "male" and enter a birth date such as 07/04/1970 and notice the cheapest option is about $265 per month. Here is a shortened link to the penalty phase, http://tinyurl.com/kw83dn
In short, if Chris C makes $32,500 and doesn't get coverage or even has a lapse of coverage for about two months, he will be fined over $1000.
Chris C, do what I do, pay the $1068 to the state and assume that gives you state coverage since you are paying for it. It's a lot cheaper than the $3180 Blue double Cross charges.
Here in the US, the right portrays it like Obama wants nationalized health care and the left says it is really private care and not much different from what we have. Comparisons to the UK health system are completely pointless because the Democrat plan is much closer to what we have here in Massachusetts which is a mandating of health insurance paid for by the individual. Where I am, you, your employer or both pay for the insurance or you are fined $1000. I don't know what the fine is for the employer but I shudder at the thought of the costs to a small mom and pop operation.
It's funny how much offense is taken at the smoke and mirrors generated by our two party political cartel.
I have to join the "OS drives the iron" camp. A hypervisor that sits directly on the iron is the OS even if all it does is serve up virtual images of the iron, VMs. The VMs are then just standardized APIs, if you will, that run programs even when those programs are what is typically considered an OS. I'll let others argue about what functionality "needs" to be built in what.
What I want to know is what is the OS when a hyperviser is sitting on a cluster of a pair of VM cluster nodes spread across a cluster pair of real nodes? It could be go beyond pairs but trying to ask the question using thousands of nodes and levels would go pear shaped and I'd confuse myself. Ah, a nice frosty beverage... or two.
What gets spent on healthcare has practically nothing to do with who pays. It's the bloody ambulance chasing lawyers and their "I'm a victim" clients driving a doc's insurance rates up to stupid levels and the asinine parents who insist on taking their little "bundle of joy" chitlins to the docs, or worse the ER , every bloody time they get the sniffles and insists on getting the latest and greatest antibiotic that will be useless against the virus their little petrie dish is spreading around.
That said, much of what both sides say on the subject is utter bollocks. The part I don't like is this mandatory insurance crap based on the theory that if you force healthy or wealthy people to buy insurance then costs will be lowered for everybody. I'm sorry the concept of fining someone who is willing to pay his own medical bills isn't freedom of choice. They feel by calling it "buying insurance" people will feel better about it than if it was called what it really is, Medicare 2.0. Other than that, I have no opinion on the subject except to say that Singapore has a nice system, can't we start with that?
Let's get this straight, putting some numbers to this efficiency bit, and lets be generous,
Convert fuel to electricity at the power plant, 45%.
Send electricity down the wires, through a transformer and out the mains, 90%
Convert to DC to charge battery, 90%
Battery efficiency, 90%
Convert back to AC to drive motor, 90%
Motor efficiency, 90%
Total efficiency fuel to motor output, 26.6%
Efficiency of average petrol IC engine, 25%
Learning the meaning of the phrase "nibbled to death", priceless.
Ok, I have questions. I RTFA over at the telegraph
"... allows its meaning to remain in tact but..." intact? probably a typo and not on her. But still,
"People deliberately use words like this when they don't need to." Ok, stop the bus, back it up... words like what??
If this is what qualifies as Piled High & Deep on that side of the pond deez daze, you have my sympatees. Take what comfort you can from knowing it isn't any betta on dis side. Perhaps it's a good thing we're all too lazy to get jiggy, more of the same clearly isn't working.
A pint, B cuz meeza nd 1.
Assuming the judge didn't seal the materials pertaining to the case, I don't see how this wouldn't fall into the public domain. I agree that it's probably illegitimate to sell or give the materials to a publisher who will resell them for profit given the typical behavior of publishers.
Then again, they charge stupid money over here for a copy of things codified into law like the National Electric Code. Don't want to break the law? Pay up to find out how to stay legal.
Actually, it should be expected, it is the 9th circuit after all. Generally things that come out of there are one of two things. Either a groundbreaking affirmation of civil rights or some whacky, spaced out, overreaching decision that only a few select other people who did the same drugs that day can wrap their head around.
That's all? They're doing much better than I figured. What's a few G£ among friends, nee taxpayers. It's all very simple, allow me to explain this to you.
[Dons policy-wonk hat]
Just think how far productivity would have fallen without all of that spending! There would have been crime in the streets, rampant unemployment and banks would have failed everywhere! Is that really what you want?
Send the parts out. The only chance Dell really has it to threaten to pull operations and cut ties with Taiwan based suppliers. The question is, are they a big enough fish for Taiwan to really care and can they afford the impact it will have in China as well. Dell needs to remember that many of the Chinese companies have ties across the strait and there is a good chance that a loss of face in Taiwan will have the same result in China.
Their best bet is to try to soften the blow by pulling the old infomercial / eBay tactic...

I assume the patent examiner didn't actually read the patent or, more likely, just wake from a tequila coma. Then again, perhaps it's just the constant overexposure to bullshit legalese wording that turns ones brain into a leathery ulcerated mass that continuously weeps smegma.
Actually, the latter would explain both the legal and political systems in this country.
Then iPhones should be outlawed. It's nice when tired pseudo-logic works both ways.
"... a local or international hacker could potentially initiate commands (such as a denial of service attack) that could..." blah blah blah.
What's to stop an international hacker anyway? Does Apple understand the concept of jurisdiction, I know the US DOJ doesn't, but does Apple? What about the Copywrong Office? Gits, the lot of them.
And monkeys could potentially fly out Apple's arse.
The tweet clearly falls into the "fair comment" bin. Unless Horizon can show actual malice, they are headed down shit creek sans paddle, ooh look... rapids. Add to that the fact they will have to show they have been damaged, I think this is different from UK law where I understand alleged damages are sufficient. Libel doesn't take place if everyone who reads it shrugs and says "so what" because no damage was done. Furthermore, their own comments have effectively immunized everyone else by making it so no further damage can be done to their reputation, so party on!
*disclaimer, Damn it Jim, I'm a commentard, not a lawyer!
Now, about that shit creek without a paddle icon.
After all they are probably just lying again. Are we expected to believe it is really different because the CIC has a (D) after his name instead of an (R)? Come on now, I was born in the morning but it wasn't _this_ morning. Sure, they say they cancelled an secret program that didn't exist, didn't do anything, wasn't implemented and wasn't legal, what's not to believe? Oh yeah, the most powerful people in Congress claim weren't informed, no credibility problems there. Sometimes, I think they do this shit just to create "conspiracy theorists" so they can point a finger and say, "who are you going to believe, us or that paranoid whacko conspiracy nut?"
I need another drink, it's 5 o'clock somewhere. Can you hear me now, Director?
One open manhole at a time. I hope the lass has learned something from this and that it isn't which speed dial button is for the lawyer.
Clearly the DEP boys should have rushed over, grabbed the girl, called the cops and pressed trespassing charges. Perhaps if they are smart they will as a counter to the "I for one, am shocked" lawsuit the mum is planning. Yes, yes, the DEP workers made a mistake; but careless, unthinking and untrained falls far short of negligent which is undoubtedly what the mum is going to cry. At some point folks need to be responsible for themselves so I don't see what is wrong with expecting a modicum of attention from people walking down the street. Then again, being mostly a country bumpkin I'm accustomed to watch where I'm going since you never know where a gopher hole, dead tree or steaming pile of shit is going to turn up.
Heck, my folks would have sent me straight back to the scene, dirty clothes and all, to apologize to the men for getting in their way and causing a disruption and ask to go back in to find my other shoe. Only then would I be told to wash my clothes, by hand because "you aren't putting those filthy things in my washer", and be unceremoniously hosed off, buck naked, in the front yard before I was even allowed in the house... Ah... good times...
Big Brother because apparently we can't watch out for ourselves.
That said, I don't see how this works. Is it the cussing that creates the biological response or the biological response generating the cussing? Big fucking deal, the amygdala is linked to cussing and increases in heart rate. That doesn't tell us diddly-squat about how they are linked, now does it? Oh look, we have A and notice B therefore B is because of A, I thought these were scientists.
Could it be that those with a more reactive amygdala are more prone to opt for cussing? Perhaps this study could be turned into something more useful like finding an easy way to distinguish "Type A" personalities from "Type B" personalities and so forth. I know I will sleep better at night knowing some dumb arse scientist got his clock cleaned after randomly whacking people with a stick.
Here I figured this guy was 20 at best but his LinkedIn profile says he got a H.S. diploma in 1993. Come to find out he claims to have studied little but MS databases since. Now it makes sense that so many of his posts reflect a love of databases and VB... no really... VB. Why I bet he wrote a whole database engine in VB to replace Jet and it was probably fas', fas' like bullet.
Ok, we need another icon. Either "LOL" "ROFL" "HFH" or something like that.
I think the whole purpose is to toss it against the netbook market wall and see what sticks. If it looks firm and googooey [or is that googui?], clings well and doesn't drip too fast then some money might be thrown into real PC class machines and applications.
Then again what would it take to go full bore, really? Hmm, lets embed an X server in Chrome! Viola! The cheeky cellos at "The GOOG" now have the whole stinking pile of X apps ready to run, including Firefox oddly enough. I wouldn't go so far as to call it Chrome OS but perhaps more along the lines of ChromeX or X-Chrome or iChrome-X or Xhrome or a panoply of happy shiny X-names... pity they won't all be shown on ESPN.
Besides, who in their right mind is going to play Crysis on a 9" screen at 4 frames per minute?
Dear GOOG, since the whole X in a browser thing was my idea, can I have a corner office with a six figure salary? Ok, how about just a barrel of cash? A small bucket? A cup of $100's? Cab fare home? A penny for my thoughts?
Amazing, the banks might learn they are all using basically the same software sold to them by their mutual friends <aside> who also probably work with or are the data thieves. Then again, maybe they just all laid off their internal secrecy staff.
Somehow I think this should have previously fallen under some "obstruction of justice" statute. After all, willfully withholding evidence from a criminal investigation would land a citizen in the pokey on collaboration or conspiracy charges at least.
