Feds drop bid for warrantless access to Yahoo! mail

The FBI has likely gotten into the account, read the mail and decided it doesn't need it for prosecution.

Fecal matter impacts rotary turbine!

They shouldn't stop at the school, they should also go after the individuals who I'm sure will claim they were "just doing their jobs".

The district is going to be in a world of hurt when some student takes a 'sexting' pic and it winds up on the net with a ready excuse that it was taken remotely. Oh yes, the poor fan will seize with the amount of shit that's going to be on it.

I'm thinking you Brits have the right idea with the Cayman Trough expedition. Sure the whole "to the stars" rhetoric sounds fanciful and dreamy but on the practical scale, it's doubtful we'll ever become some other planets "E.T." Although I'm sure it will make a nice movie one day.

"I'm sorry, Dave."

I don't know if it will work as there isn't much of an imperative for the computer to recognize faces and read body language. It may be those things are hard wired from birth. It's to the benefit of a cat, or person for that matter, to know the difference between a vicious dog and a kind person or read a single face for anger or happiness. I just don't know what's in it for a metal box. Really, what can happen, it gets shut off?

Offensive apps

Apple doesn't ban offensive apps. How else can one explain iTunes? I know plenty of people who are offended by some of the music and movies sold there. Personally, I'd say don't buy it if you're offended, but I guess there is a reason they call it a double standard.

NHS blames computer error for transplant fouls

Eddy Ito

Re: Act of God

I think you are confused between error and failure. Here's the thing, a computer is just like a hammer or gun. Imagine, "yes doctor, my thumb is smashed because my hammer made an error" or "I'm sorry officer, the gun had an error and it just shot him dead". You see, it's possible the handle of the hammer broke at an inopportune time and smashed the thumb and it's equally possible that the safety mechanism on the gun broke during unsafe handling. But you see those are failures not errors. Likewise a large rock fallen from the heavens can cause a computer failure upon impact but not an error. Consider the origin of the phrase, "to err is human".

Adobe man to Apple: 'Go screw yourself'

Eddy Ito

A bit haughty

Don't you love a clash of egos? It's always fun theater but I suspect Mr. Brimelow is fully aware that Adobe isn't the main focus. He must know the new conditions are there to sell Mac computers and create a homogeneous development ecosphere. It isn't like the iPhone SDK will be running on Windows, Linux, Solaris, etc.

This is just another step in the vendor lock-in line dance providing end to end platform purity. You can also be sure the SDK will be setting some sort of "Genuine Win^H^H^HMac" flag to make preliminary app store screening easier. All your app are belong to Apple.

Re: Topography is quite hard, apparently

First, I think you meant geography as topography generally isn't concerned with people or politics. That is topography is concerned only with physical attributes of a space and not the drawing of imaginary lines differentiating my dirt from your dirt.

"Let me guess: you're from the States"

Well it isn't like he'd expect you to know where Teec Nos Pos is. That said, it's true general edjumacation isn't a strong suit here in the states but then what would you expect from an education system based on a government monopoly? Given the constant complaining about poor education, I'm amazed by some peoples desire for a government run health care system. Sure it might work in Denmark! or even The Netherlands ;-) but compare gubbermints and ask yourself if you really want Mitch McConnell or Nancy Pelosi pulling the strings.

WTF?

Mix metaphors much?

"Open-source is communist in the way that free healthcare is communist. It's not; it just makes sense."

First there is no such thing as "free healthcare" inasmuch as even a free lunch is just one paid for by someone else. Second there is no correlation between the two, which is probably a good thing. Finally "just makes sense" doesn't imply something isn't communist any more than green apples imply ravens are black.

"Did you catch the key word?"

The key word is common, from which both communism and community are derived. Note that the former is a style of governance for a group of people and the latter is a fish of a different color.

Open source allows common people to take their fork and go home, that is, away from the current community and start one anew. That is not so with free health care, which looks very like a monopoly unless you're a freetard or philanthropist.

Murdoch tells old media to 'stand up' to Google, Bing

Eddy Ito
Pirate

Business model? We've heard of it.

Is it me or does Murdoch sound a bit like RIAA? Perhaps they could get their respective heads out of their collective arses and realize that the internet is one case where convenience to the consumer doesn't equate to a higher price. That is partly because the convenience to the producer is far greater and cuts out more middlemen... rather it would be if they could solve their cranio-rectal disease.

Oh, I see, they _are_ the middlemen. Perhaps a man in the middle attack would be appropriate.

Normal Human Being™ reviews the iPad

Eddy Ito

Begging the question

"A NHB does not require the use of complex spreadsheets on their portable media companion device."

Does an NHB require a portable media companion device at all? The "TARGET" you describe is looking for a toy and not a tool. The question to be seen will be how many folks will want another toy and at what price. It seems, to me, that it is far easier to justify an upgrade than an addition. In the long run it will take a fair bit of revolution and magic to change the marginal uptake history of tablets in general, regardless of capability.

"When you're alone and life is making you lonely, You can always go - downtown"

You see the whole point of going downtown is to be with people, queuing up would seem to accomplish that. Personally, I don't see how standing about among a bunch of people you don't know with the ultimate goal of buying a whatsit thistime magically makes loneliness go away especially when it's a device to assist in melting away the rest of reality, but there you go. On the other hand if you're an impatient antisocial freak trying to avoid the throng you can hit the mall and be fishing by noon... who knew.

Oh the clouds are clearing, time to get my antisocial freak on and drown some worms. Ta.

"The US legal system REQUIRES they protect their patents."

Of course it does, the US legal system was created by lawyers and it's mostly lawyers that push patents. Is it any wonder that so many obvious and just shite patents go through? Apple uncloaks deep details of its 11 iPad apps

Eddy Ito

Calling Bovine Excrement

"Bluetooth is still a no no in terms of general connectivity. You can only communicate with other iPhoneOS devices via bluetooth, not with anything else."

Sorry but I've had several people link their ipods and iphones, via bluetooth, with my cars head unit to stream audio and the last time I checked my sony xplod wasn't running iPhoneOS. What you mean by general connectivity is there is no BT sync or file transfer but then why would you with WiFi on board? Yes I know, like everything else, you need an app for that and in this case one is called Air Sharing. Jailbreak not required but money is.

Yes, I do find it a tad ironic that Apple historically was first in including the nice features, e.g. CD/DVD burning, in the desktop OS and yet they leave so many basics out of the handheld OS. It's funny what competition, or a lack thereof, will do.

Badgers

re: hm

"It's a choice between rights holders and the general public."

You seem to imply a difference where none exists. It isn't as if the so called "rights holders" have special rights that aren't available to "the general public". You seem to make a distinction between rights based on ease of upkeep and multiplication inasmuch as it is easier to maintain and duplicate a recording than it is to maintain and duplicate a boat. Then again, that partially gets reflected in the purchase price. What seems to be the problem is the recording industry doesn't understand that the value of a CD full of music or a DVD or BD movie is lower than it was even a year ago. If the industries kept pace in pricing and technology, they would probably have better profits from higher sales and happier customers. This all carries through and perhaps paying 40 Megadollars for a leading actor isn't going to remain an option for long but so what, the ego of some of these people could use a working over by badgers' paws.

French suspect grilled over Obama Twitter hack

Dear Mr. President,

In the future, when answering a security question such as "What is your mother's maiden name?" Lie. It's ok, it really is. Why? Well, if you put Dunham, it isn't really that secure now is it? How did I know that? It's easy, there is this thing called Google and while nobody really knows how it works, it finds all kinds of things like that. No, you shouldn't worry about it, you have more pressing things such as how to maintain a Democrat majority after that whole health care fiasco. Yes, it really was and your opponents are screaming on the outside but have that smug joyous inner smile. Now then, stop wasting perfectly good tax dollars having the FBI coordinate with French police over a silly twit and take a basic lesson in online security.

felony made easy

It's all in that "suspicion of" bit; proving that you don't actually need to commit a crime to be treated like a criminal. That way they can make the charges look like it was worse (or better) than it really was. In the long run they get what they want, to wit ditch and publicly disgrace the teacher without actually giving parents a reason to really make a stink about the schools lackadaisical attitude toward the care of the chitterlings. Oh, the teacher will probably wind up with a minor conviction of public drunkenness or some such.

MIT boffins on track of portable 60-watt seawater desalinator

Eddy Ito

2000 PPM!?!

I can't imagine anyone would actually call that desalinated. A concentration like that puts it squarely in the middle of the brackish camp as it's a bit over 5% the concentration of plain ocean water. I suspect, like everything else, it's far easier to get the first ~95% of the salt out and a damn site harder to get that last 4.85%.
