Dear Google and Facebook: You don't want Skype

Eddy Ito
Badgers

Obviously

If Google gets Skype they will record all your conversations and create a searchable database so the NSA can keep track of everything you say and they will sell companies data on your inner most pseudo-private desires in the hopes you won't be too pissed when they call during dinner hours.

Facebook controlling Skype would be much different. Your friends would video/voice spam you with every "must have" for the game of the week they play. Simultaneously everyone will be able to keep track of every bloody sound you make and of course, they will sell companies data on your inner most pseudo-private desires in the hopes you won't be too pissed when they call during dinner hours.

Either way within about two years there will be inet-nannies demanding that the gubbermint "do something", probably "for the children" and the good old congress critters, in the interest of being reelected, will certainly "do something" stupid and ineffective like make a "Do Not Skype" database that will require you to sign up and inform the folks in East Buttfuck what handle to send the majority of their skype spam to. Of course, the usual suspects will be exempt from the don't bugger list based on how much political influence they have or can afford. Typically they are, in order, political parties looking for donations/ support, religiosity groups looking for donations/ support, police and fire groups who want you to enjoy their balls as much as they do and any odd sales fucker you made the mistake of saying hello to in your travels.

End of the tether: Google plays nice with carriers

Eddy Ito
Badgers

So it begins

The carriers are just making a grasp to prevent slipping into the abyss of commodity service. Can it be long now? Soon wireless internet will make the same slide as wired internet that terminates in an endpoint and from there you connect whatever you damn well please. They may take our :80, :25 and :142 as we give them the :79 but they'll never take OUR FREEDOM!

Apple thinks Intel is fab?

Somewhat surprised

Here I'd figure Apple would be suing Intel over the latest line of "i" series processors. How can anyone but Apple have an i-device?

Stolen smart-meter SIM leads to outrageous 3G bill

Eddy Ito
Grenade

Doesn't make sense

Why would a company put an unlimited 3G SIM into a device that has to transmit... what, maybe 1 KiB per month? Shirley... or is it Sheila, the smart thing to do would have been an arrangement for a limited data PAYG arrangement that was renewable every few years. FFS, it isn't like they were getting a family plan with an emergency mob for grammy, the usage would be pretty much fixed given the number of meters... oh yeah, fixed meters and frankly GPRS would work just fine.

It's good I'm not a judge, I'd tell both companies to split the A$200k as a lesson on the cost of stupid.

Apple confirms white iPhone 4 on sale tomorrow

Eddy Ito

Basically

This is Apple saying; "yeah we can't get the 4G antenna right on the iPhone 5 and we won't be getting any parts for the iPhone 5 from Japan for another six months so here's a shiny _new_ iPhone color to keep our name in the press for the graduation season. Don't worry, if we have any more hangups when fall comes around, we've got a shiny _new_ black iMac and a polished nickel iPad 2.01 to sell to the kiddies when they go back to school."

Note to Mozilla: We don't get the Firefox billboards

Exactly right

To realize the truth of this all you need to do is drive down I-5, that's "the" 5 to all you SoCal monkeys in the 'hood. Every single person is looking to get one space ahead especially when entering the freeway. It doesn't matter that it causes congestion behind them because they are getting it "for free". ET, phone back: Alien quest seeks earthling coders

Eddy Ito
Alien

To point out the obvious

"The data was three days old by the time Ehman spotted Wow!, meaning that if it were a message, the sender could have moved on for lack of a reply."

"Could have"? Let's allow for a bit of reality here. If it had come from the closest Terebellum star, Omega Sagittarii, the message wasn't 3 days old it was more like 78 years old so... yeah it's quite likely the sender has, without a very impressive lifespan, probably shuffled off by the time Ehman saw it.

Equally, if it had come from some space schooner much closer to us, say under a light year, it is disappointing that they are either so daft as to not have a proper comprehension of physics to go the last mile in their herculean undertaking or so egotistical as to automatically assume we would instantly know WTF 6EQUJ5 means (for the record my statistical analysis shows it to mean "mostly harmless"). In either case, all I can say is, good! We have plenty of halfwits in the case of the former and plenty of pols if it's the latter. Then again, maybe 6EQUJ5 is just the sound Voyager makes when impacting the only other intelligent life in the 'verse.

Nude Florida man in gunfight with police SWAT robot

Eddy Ito

Once wasn't enough

I don't know the reporter was a gun fanatic nor do I know "rack" is highly technical jargon but presumably the reporter meant he pulled the bolt back to load the first round into the chamber but failed and had to "rack" it again. Of course this means the gun was likely unloaded before Mr. Nude retrieved it and the TV crew did everything they could to make it sound more than it was.

I will have to give the props to the reporter for describing it as an AK47 rifle and not, as Mr. Page has done, calling it an "assault rifle" which would require it to be select fire and the owner to have undergone a rather extensive approval process in order to make it legal. Since there was no mention of the nude guy being charged with illegally possessing a Title 2 firearm we can safely assume it was not an assault rifle and was functionally no different from a Winchester SXR or Remmington 750 and that it got its moniker based solely on the "it looks mean" basis.

US Navy laser cannon used to set boat aflame

Eddy Ito

Needs an audio track

Can the laser at least have some kind of sound effect? It isn't that I don't like the sizzle of steaks on the grill but I'm thinking something with a bit more gusto. You know just to get the attention of the bad guys and show that you aren't playing. Yes, being taken out silently from little more than a dot on the horizon does put the fear of the all powerful into a person but then they might just chalk up a burnt motor to bad luck. On the other hand, there's just something about the sound of an M61 Vulcan or a GAU-8 Avenger that says; "excuse me, just a moment of your time".

DARPA wants secure Droids, iPads, iPhones

Eddy Ito
FAIL

A neat trick

Don't the DARPA sect understand that this may be a feat more difficult than mere VTOL jeeps or flying submarines that transmogrify into a fleet of armored battle bots you can carry in your pocket? Seriously how do they expect to lock down an operating system that is built upon selling the spy data it continuously collects? Then again, perhaps they do understand, the "pre-boot environment" would effectively be a container that separates the pretty OS from the data needing security, it could even lie to the location interface so software running on the OS couldn't track the user's movement. But if you're going to go through that kind of hassle why not just write a secure OS with emulation capabilities to run the iOS/Android software?

Blind greed, stupid attorney & lazy troll == lost cause

I predict this suit goes down in flames, as it rightly should. This scatter gun strategy of targeting so many at once I believe is going to severely bite them in the arse. I always thought trolling 101 taught folks to pick them off one at a time because paying off was cheaper than fighting. That math changes when the fight is split 30+ ways. The defendants should right now be assembling and petitioning the court to get these suits joined, unless of course the plaintiff was stupid enough to file a single suit against all these companies. It is one thing for each company to fight it out alone but to beg them to gang up and split the cost of pounding you into troll burger takes either minimal brains or maximal testicles.

I'd say 12.1 miles should do it as you aren't exploring or using any marine resources so the 200 mile Exclusive Economic Zone shouldn't apply.

"The internal consistency of the United States telecoms regulator is astounding!"

If what you're saying is that they have concrete in their colons, to whom do you expect they will ultimately give that tough shit?

Eddy Ito
WTF?

Still not clear

On one hand, we have AT&T which is the new name for Southwestern Bell Corp after it was split from AT&T and then swallowed 22 other split off bell companies and the original AT&T. On the other hand we have Verizon which was formed Bell Atlantic merging with GTE (the other phone company at the time of the AT&T breakup) and basically owns most of the other bell companies along with MCI and others.

Now then, post acquisition we would have AT&T and Verizon which, in theory, would be different from the time of the original breakup when we had AT&T and a smaller GTE. Oh, now I see, that is completely different because Verizon isn't GTE... no wait.

Judge to music industry: 'Worth trillions? Forget it'

Easy answer

The best the music biz should be able to hope for is the equivalent of a reverse class action. The difference being that instead of each claimant getting about $8, each defendant would cough up that amount. Seems reasonable to me, assuming they win of course.

Download data versus piracy claims: the figures don’t add up

Eddy Ito

Simple math

According to theGOOG here: http://code.google.com/speed/articles/web-metrics.html the average web page is 312KB. Adding the averages of 185KB for images, 66KB for scripts and 27 KB for stylesheets gives a total download size of 590KB per page. Assuming an average of 6.5GB per month give a basic estimate of about 11000 pages per month or about 366 pages per day. This might seem like a lot even when split among the users on a single line but add in the likes of the Facebook Farm Mafia and what do you get? I'm fairly certain Google doesn't have its spiders playing games of Facebook or anywhere else, but I could be wrong.

Make streaming a felony: Obama

Eddy Ito

And people wonder

Anyone who wonders why we have severe political shifts in the House and Senate every few years only has to actually look at actions taken by either party. Yes, the people of the US want change but they aren't really looking to merely trade Halliburton for Time Warner. I'm certain the Tea Party will do well in the next few years, at least until they are in power and decide that more legislation has to be written to benefit... if I had to guess now, the Evangelical Chu... wait, doesn't everyone already know this is just astroturf laid down by the religious right under the banner of excessive gov't giveaways to corporations that don't get automatic tax immunity?

Eddy Ito

Unfortunately

Long gone are the majority of forced labor prisons. Most prisons for white collar workers are more akin to summer camps with stiffer curfews and nearly no prison actually produces any useful product of labor regardless of collar colour. Add to that, increasing prison enrollment would put a greater strain on budgets and the people covering those budgets don't have the money anyway. Most of this will undoubtedly be handled with fines, payable to everyone's least favorite Uncle, in the hopes of curtailing the current coffer conundrum.

Asian soup peril menaces bionic shark

Shark!

Can't say, I don't eat protestants. I will say that shark, particularly mako, is occasionally sold as swordfish by less than honorable fishmongers and restaurants. That said, I'm sure Ms. Bee would want me to tell you probably shouldn't eat either shark or swordfish due to the high levels of mercury. Besides, most of them are caught on long lines now and aren't the freshest thing going.

"stunt eaters"... precious. Oh goody, bangers and mash... again.

Eddy Ito
Pint

Pity

I rather like shark steaks, depending on the model of course, and never could distinguish between shark fin soup and gelatin based versions but then I don't really like it that much to actually pay for it myself. The way I look at it is rendered connective tissue is rendered connective tissue and once isolated can be flavored with anything, it doesn't matter if it's bonito flakes or lamb or chicken and I'd bet most people couldn't tell the difference regardless of where the thickener came from. That said, I imagine it's like buying rabbit, you want to make sure the feet and/or head is still on it to make sure you aren't just getting charged a premium for the stray tabby down the block.

Now then, the mention of Humbolt squid has given me a wonderful idea for dinner. Thanks Peter Clarke 1, I'll have the bar fender hold an ale for you.

Poor spelling is perhaps the single largest bane of good coding. I can't tell you how many times I've seen "foo" and "bar" initialized as different variables. FFS, it's "FUBAR"! How is anyone down the road going to maintain a steaming heap like that? To make matters worse, they are often commented out and that's frequently both printf statements! Programmers, an infuriating lot!

Re: Anarchist vs. Libertarian

@h4rm0ny,

Clearly you don't know the difference between the Tea Party and Libertarians. You see the Tea Party is a faction of the Republican party. Your assertion that "Libertarians are anti-abortion and other such things" is clearly, being generous, misguided. You seem to believe that a Tea Party member and a Libertarian is merely a distinction without a difference but you couldn't be further from reality. The truth is that the Libertarian position on abortion is, hang on to your socks, government should keep their snotty noses out of people's medical choices. Notice that this doesn't stop any given Libertarian from holding a personal opinion either way, merely that it isn't within the purview of government to force either on you.

In general, if you are looking to find the a position on anything ask yourself a simple question; who is better equipped to make decisions about you, your lifestyle, your family and your belongings? Choose one.

A. You and government isn't needed.

D. Government, but you get to pick from a small number of lifestyle options.

R. Government, but you get to pick from a small number of ways to spend your money.

L. You but government is a necessary evil to prevent others from forcing their decisions on you.

@AC

To get back to AC's answer, the difference seems to be one of extremity. Libertarians recognize a need for government as a check against the encroachment on an individuals rights by another entity. Anarchism doesn't seem go that far and I'll assume the theory says the greedy thugs are held in check by the rest of the populous. But then I'm a libertarian muppet and not an h4rm0nious one.

Eddy Ito
WTF?

Re: Allow me to help out your memory

1. Market regulation should be to prevent coercion, fraud and collusion. If the markets were actually open, meaning without overbearing regulations designed to heighten barriers to entry, we shouldn't have to care if some "spin out of control" as others businesses will crop up to replace them that may be more stable. Acceptable risk/ reward ratios being determined by the customers rather than government. Of course that would mean institutions like banks would have to open their books for inspection but instead we have the Fed which keeps books closed because they worry if the public actually knew how bad things were there would be runs on banks on a weekly basis.

2. The private sector would be happy to provide highways in the same way they did railroads. Unfortunately, most people would balk at having to pay a toll that actually covered the cost of maintaining the road plus a small profit. The result is the cost gets hidden in taxes and acts as a subsidy to the auto industry because folks don't realize the actual cost of driving and make less than ideal choices of vehicles as a result.

3. You finally win one but remember who actually did the work to break up the phone monopoly and opened up the world to invent devices like the iPhone, Droid X, etc. It was MCI who did all the legwork before government woke up 8 months later. Without that the internet as we know it is much less useful and would probably be run by @&T.

4. Environmental policy to promote breathable air: don't bother seeing South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China.

5. High school? Too funny. Only university is acceptable.

6. Socialism? Really? So-so Security isn't something anyone should count on in the long run as Ponzi schemes have a way of running out. Mediocre^H^H^H^Hcare is... I think I've made my point. Oh, for future reference, citing two of the most regressive taxes US citizens are burdened with isn't a great way to make a point. You are aware only poor people pay them, no?

7. You are really just restating #1 here aren't you? The difference is using terms like "Labor" and "us" to bring it home. Ok, let's do the old arguement; "If you don't like you're job, work somewhere else." "But there is nowhere else in this, or any other, economy!" Now can we see that regulations which have raised the barrier to entry into any given market don't help anyone, especially workers?

We finally agree on one thing, it would be easy to go on and on. I've fixed this for you; "The problem with the pro-government crowd is that their members keep holding political office. Being that I'm so sure that government doesn't work, why should I trust it to run me?"

Godson: China shuns US silicon with faux x86 superchip

Eddy Ito

x86 and/or x64?

Interesting choice given they probably use a Linux variant and, as stated in another post, Linux is already a MIPS native. So the question is why? Will we be seeing Godson cloud servers running Windows code for so many clever cloud terminals? Perhaps SaaS never had it so good.
