Russia: 'We'll dump the ISS into the sea after 2020'

Eddy Ito

""knowledgeable government sources and NASA spokesmen were aghast" at Davydov's suggestion that the ISS would meet the same fate as Russia's Mir space station, which was de-orbited and sent into the sea near Christmas Island in 2000."

Aghast at what; the thought of dumping it into the sea or that someone actually said it out loud? In reality it's never been a question about dumping it into the sea, it's only about when. Hopefully we can actually finish building the damn thing before they scrap it. Unless all this money was spent to find out _if_ we could build an ISS. Actually that does sound more like the typical gubbermint project that way: allocate vast sums of money, build something grand, pat self on back for building it, walk away, look for new very expensive project while letting the last one crumble to ash, wash hands, repeat.

Now then, cocktails are in order. Yes if only to suppress my building anger and frustration at these fu^Hickle political boobs.

One-third of US consumers will buy an iPhone 5

Eddy Ito

Re: Its called the US.

Ah, so we can assume that $199 is with the $20-30 per month for 24 month contract "tax". Then again, it's likely the iPhone carriers don't have "low rent" plans that don't include a new phone every other year. But hey, it's cheaper up front anyway.

Eddy Ito

"Consumers"

Defined as what? Defined as "monkeys who answered our poll". It's well known that cell/mobile phone stats are total bullshit. Try this one on for size; ~303 million cell phones in the US for a population of ~311 million people = ~97% of the US population has cell phones... or so they tell us. What don't they say? How about ~20% of the population is age 14 or under... or perhaps that it's fairly equally divided on a per year basis in that range? That would mean that roughly 3% of the population was aged 2 years or younger. So what? Well one of two things is true... extrapolating their 97% would mean that every single person over the age of 2 years had a cell phone -OR- they have smoked enough pipe dreams for every person over the age of 2.

I'm sure I've said it before, most folks are going to carry two phones; one "smart" phone and one simple phone for voice calls. Hell, why wouldn't they when so many businesses are willing to throw one more "smart" phone tax write-off to their troops.

@DavCrav

"It's a well-known fact in science circles that the best and brightest in China (and not just China, but many countries all over the world) run away to more interesting universities very early..."

It's a fact that many of them return after their education to help raise the standards back "home" and find highly productive and profitable jobs. This is especially true given the current economic climate as costs tend to be lower and opportunities more available. In the case of China, many of the best and brightest are state sponsored with the intent of getting a world class education and bringing it back to keep the economic growth going through research, business and education.

That said, you may be right and it may not be racism but it certainly is ignorance. After all, it's a well-known fact that many people can't look past their own pride colored glasses.

Apps overrated in mobile web wars

Eddy Ito

What about fart apps?

Is it better to have fart web pages or fart apps? There is a reason web pages are just as good as most apps. It's because most apps are shite as they all need an internet connection. Add to that they are inherently web apps and not native apps and folks are right to figure, why bother?

Seriously, why the fuck should it be so hard to find a calendar app, even a pay app, that doesn't _require_ either exchange or google? FFS, there are even note taking apps that take notes on "the cloud" and can't do it locally. Seriously, something simple like "pick up wine / beer / milk on the way home"... oh no, it's RTM cloud app.

Lexus CT200h hybrid

Eddy Ito

Re: Lexi

To my knowledge the Matrix is a has been a US only version built in the joint Pontiac plant in California. Now that Pontiac is dead and the plant is closed, I'm guessing production has moved to Japan. That said, it seems likely that the cost of hybridizing the Matrix only makes sense when rebadged as a Lexus. I just wish they had done a hybrid Vibe so it would be several grand cheaper... then again, I'm a bit of a skinflint.

Eddy Ito
Meh

Other side of the pond

The gas only version is called a Toyota Matrix and when Pontiac was alive there was a Pontiac Vibe branded version. It's still the same car only by adding the L to the front and hybrid drive they feel a considerable price jump is warranted.

Eddy Ito

I'd wager they are making the non-profiles public. As you so cleverly pointed out, an empty profile is currently a dis-positive or null, depending on your burden of proof choice. It only seems reasonable that the GOOG can make a null profile public without saying shit to anyone and if you then happen to populate your particular null, as it is a personal null after all, that it is now public. No, I don't know why one would choose to lick it at the pub but hey, it's their choice and if they aren't totally hot, I know another pub.

How much cash?

I know Apple has a rather large bucket but is it really worth the effort of depleting it to pay the lawyers? Unless most of Apple's shareholders are lawyers working these suits then it makes perfect sense. Drive the stock price high by holding a load of cash, sell said stock off getting premium price then collect all the cash behind it in lawsuit fees while the stock price plummets and buy in low and wait for the next cash pile to grow... rinse, repeat.

VMware: We will virtualize entire world in six years

Just 2 points

1 - "the rate of virtualization for SAP suites has made the biggest jump in the past year"... I've used SAP, aptly named but perhaps it was badly configured, anyway I'm guessing that virtualization can't make a noticeable hit and perhaps it would run better. So why not virtualize?

2- The whole world in six years... someone has been drinking the coffee at infinite loop a little too long.

US Marine gets date with Meg Griffin on YouTube

Eddy Ito

@David W.

I'm thinking you replied to the wrong message. I haven't seen anyone lambaste Ms. Kunis or any other actor for that matter. My point was that if she was best known for "That 70s Show" then it is the equivalent of saying she is unknown. Much before today, I would have never recognized her name which I thought proved the point. That you admit not knowing if she is any good is perhaps a good indication that you haven't seen a sufficient body of her work to judge so she is to you, like me, unknown.

As far as "That 70s Show", I did see it... once and IIRC that was enough to tell me it wasn't worth watching again. Then again, perhaps it was Ashton Kutcher who turned me off the show, now that I have looked up the cast and found he was on it. There see, a little A.K. ribbing, not exactly a lambasting was it.

Eddy Ito

Oh... Kaayyy

No, I had neither realized she was 14 nor did/do I care. Oddly enough, I thought the Brady Bunch et al. were parodies of 70s life "fresh". Sorry, I don't see much humor or point in a parody of a caricature wrapped in a mockery of a lampoon. We'll have to agree to disagree on whether it was or even had potential to be funny.

Eddy Ito

You mean to tell me that anyone watched a thing called "That 70's Show"?!?! Gods a little fishes, it must the young Facebook crowd, no person who actually survived the 70s with their brain intact would have any interest at all.

Perhaps they could run a quick sim to explain that clusterfuck.

To think that Mommy's precious angel would pick something they enjoy, such as boozing, over things they don't particularly care for, like class and work, it... it... it simply isn't conceivable really. I mean lets examine the facts. A students perception of their own measure, be it sexual prowess, sense of humor, whatever, appears to be far better with beer goggles than without. Apple v Samsung: Jobs strikes back

Eddy Ito

Is the ITC that stupid?

If they do any checking around, including the Apple patents, they won't be giving this to much skin. It boggles the mind how quickly Apple patent 7,469,381 was pushed through while patents of others seem to languish for ages. Only a year in 2008? It was either a light year at the patent office, the patent examiner had a lot of help or Apple did. That is lightning fast for the USPTO and makes me question just how thorough they were.

The design patents are equally dubious. A bunch of pics of bricks with softened edges and little else. Apple design patent D618,677 points out the Samsung F700 under "other publications" and guess what? It's a brick with a touchscreen and rounded corners just like the iPhone. As for the tablet patent D504,889, it's beyond me how they managed to get it. Someone drew a rectangle and rounded the corners and back edges. Good thing tabricks with rounded corners and edges have been around for a while like the HP Compaq Tablet PC TC1100.

Perhaps you missed this:

http://www.apple.com/iphone/iphone-3gs/

I'll sum up for you. It is: a $49 iPhone, competing in the low end phone market, perhaps the most brilliant stroke Apple's marketing department has had and far better than changing everything again and again and over and over ad nauseum.

Oh, if the owners aren't using the web or apps, why would they get anything other than a phone? Perhaps the big reason both iPhone and Android are growing is because they have both broken the business market which is unfortunate for RIM's Blackberry.

Seriously, given this is set up as the playground for the wealthy it would behoove the likes of Apple, Microsoft, Red Hat (or a Linux consortium) and others to do something sensible like be first on the list for the domains they use as defaults. That way at least folks will know who is reading their mail... and zeroconfing a peak at all the questionably legal material going about your home network.

Apple strangleholds worldwide battery output

Facepalm

If I'm not mistaken

It's a stock image that starts on a blank background and allows for easy insertion of an object, in this case a wafer-book but it works equally well for anything narrow like a pen, mobile or remote. You can also get other positions such as holding a blank business card, one ready to drop something from between the forefinger and thumb or as if holding the handle of a bag. You can even pick your desired orientation and just tweak to fit. It's actually quite stunning how many pictures of just hands you can get for a nominal fee.

You know what this means? Some pol will undoubtedly try to get these images banned because they can't control their own sexual hand fetish. At least they will do it for the children because that lack of control could hit someone in the eye... hence the icon.

Faking reviews? You should fret about more than illegality

Eddy Ito

@AC

"Sony should be about to go out of business but it wont, its shareprice will hardly budge and people will still buy products."

Why is that? The PS3 hacking lawsuit, the PSN network data breach, the battery problems from years ago? It's a $25B company that makes many varied products; batteries, cameras, laptops, game consoles, music, movies, etc. I'd be shocked if a fault in one segment made even a ripple through the rest of the company. Perhaps if it had, they would have handled the PSN breach better and wouldn't have had their music website in Greece or the Sony Ericsson site in Canada cracked open. Seriously, did I miss something?

That said, you're absolutely right that most folks have the attention span of a gnat and buy things with little thought or reason. The saying no such thing as bad press is too often true and accounts for why simple brand recognition will sell nearly anything from pole to pol.

18 months? Lucky

On this side of the pond they insist on boning us for 24 months so we can have the privilege of paying an extra $25 per month, which doesn't go away. [Insert t-mob/@&T merger rant here]

I actually think a fair number of the Apple faithful buy a new one every year. I've met several through several friends who have bought the second hand units. I feel most of the iPhone growth is in the $49 3GS market where folks can meet an Android price, have their brand and if it will take iOS 5, eat their cake too. Frankly it's the best marketing move by Apple since they launched the iPhone 4.

Also, add to the ARM lag because Apple are designing their own chips. It's a lot easier for the Android crowd to pick the best from the growing number of available chips from companies that are all out to leapfrog each other and not be tied to a single companies design cycle.

US Senators pen Act to ban location-based stalking

Eddy Ito

Mostly harmless

A quick read shows that under the section called "Exceptions"

"A covered entity may knowingly collect, receive, record, obtain, or disclose to a nongovernmental individual or entity the geolocation information from an electronic communication device without the express authorization of the individual that is using the electronic communications device if the covered entity has a good faith belief that the collection, receipt, recording, obtaining, or disclosure is... for the sole purpose of transmitting the geolocation information to the individual or another authorized recipient, including another third party authorized under this subparagraph"

Translation: Google, Apple, Verizon, et al. only need to have a warm fuzzy about who they give the data to without doing any verification, much less a rigorous verification. "Gee, we looked them in the eye and they seemed like such nice blokes. We are the victims here because our 'good faith belief' in them was betrayed."
