"... he'll be able to pop for a bottle of Herradura Selección Suprema Extra Anejo for that eventual margarita."
Are yOu tRyiNg to maKe me aPoplECtic? [breath slowly, relax, inhale, exhale] What kind of heathen would suggest such a thing? Repeat after me, margaritas are made with blanco or, if you must, joven. I suppose depending on which brand you have, I could forgive even a resposado. To suggest making any mixed drink with that añejo is not something I can let pass without comment.
Let us see what kind of man you are Mr. Myslewski, handbags at dawn!
I don't know where you are but those are pipe dreams < 20 miles outside of LA. Here are some real world speeds measured at real world times.
Verizon DSL = 4-6 Mbs down / 0.3 Mbs up
Time Warner Cable = 0.4-1.0 Mbs down / 0.2 Mbs up
Either way the QoS is horrible and the voip phone is almost always choppy on the other end. I only keep it because of the mobile app that allows for cheap international calls.
Sure TWC goes up dramatically at 3 am and might be reasonable at 10 am but for anyone working a normal first shift that likes to sleep when it's dark, forget it. I wish I could get the same service in this sprawling metropolis of millions as my mother who lives in a tiny town of 3,000 over a hundred miles from Boston. Oh well, only two and a half years to go.
Apple did pay dividends but they stopped paying quarterly like everyone else back in 1995. Since then there has been a "dividend" paid out in 2000 and again in 2005 in the form of a 2:1 split. Personally, I prefer the stock split type of dividend because it keeps the per share price reasonable allowing for greater control in allocation and that is especially true for those just starting out with a small portfolio.
Then again, I can certainly understand the shit or get off the pot sentiment toward a cash pile that is nearly a quarter of Apple's market cap. Who knows, maybe if they can hang on to the "mine is the biggest in the land" title for a quarter it will make them happy.
"Dallas had revealed to jurors the man had previously been accused and acquitted of rape. He was re-tried in October last year, convicted and jailed."
Is there no equivalent of "double jeopardy" in UK jurisprudence? Of course I suppose it's possible something new might have turned up so it didn't apply but it seems odd from a US perspective.
Also, it looks like El Reg missed a bit. The defendant was on trial for assault in the current case, not rape.
"has yet to announce any plans for genuine 4G (LTE) deployments"
Genuine 4G? LTE? Haven't seen 1 Gbit/s for any LTE deployments in the States. Did someone roll out a 4G candidate system like LTE Advanced while I wasn't looking? Sure "4G" LTE might be faster than the "4G" HSPA+ 42 but it's a long way from "genuine 4G".
To clarify, it would be Linuxes or more accurately Linux distributions. Linii is just wrong on so many levels I don't know where to begin. Briefly, the word ends in -ux not -us, is not Latin, is genderless, and is a proper noun. Further, -ii isn't appropriate pluralisation in any language of which I am aware. Now then, repeat after me, octopuses, octopi, octopodes.
Yes, it's the one with the pedantic grammar nazi icon on the sleeve, why?
"Maybe there is a new way to 'sneak' in to the US, all expenses paid even."
It will only be all expenses paid if he accepts the public defender assigned to the case. My guess is the U.S. Department of "Justice" is actually out to ruin him financially so he could count on the worst they can find or pony up the cash to buy someone more skilled. Either way they feel they win since their sense (a)morality is satisfied by a win and prison time or a loss and delivering financial ruin. What they don't understand is that their "example" making will do more to make a martyr in the eyes of most Americans. Sure the "mainstream" press will own the story up front but it will become pretty clear that they are just corporate lackeys owned by Disney, Vivendi, et al. Let the revulsion begin.
After a little digging around the xprize site, I notice the rules aren't quite fully fixed. For instance the competition guidelines page states:
"The winners will be the three solutions achieving the highest diagnostic score regarding a set of 15 distinct diseases in a group of 15-30 people in three days (full details will soon be available in the Competition Guidelines). This diagnosis must be performed in the hands of a consumer, independently of a healthcare worker or facility."
Pay special notice to the "will soon be available" bit as they "are still in development". How easy to do is going to come down to what 15 diseases they pick and the associated metrics that will need to be collected. It will also be a question of how squeamish they decide the "consumer" is.
"I wonder how much they spend on themselves and their lawyers, and how much on doing anything useful?"
Since what they make are legal contracts for other people to use a deceased artists works and lawsuits against people who don't have a contract, I'd say what they spend on themselves and their lawyers is approximately 100%. How that breaks down further I won't hazard guess... unless the foundation is composed of lawyers then it's trivial really.
Sure everyone is talking about Facebook and Twitter because they seem to be the big players but it seems pretty clear to me that Google+ is chasing a different and much more important rival, LinkedIn. This is Google trying to make its search as relevant as a LinkedIn search. I'm sure Google could care less about indexing Facebook or Twitter but if they could deeply probe LinkedIn they would be really happy.
Compare LinkedIn's >135M users with Facebook's 800M+ and you'll notice that a few of the Facebook accounts are there only to play games so that a user's "real" account isn't overflowing with Farm Wars & Mafiaville junk. Facebook is where folks go to kill time, microblog, and chat. LinkedIn is where folks go to do business, get leads, and job prospects so folks have a financial incentive to "keep it real" that doesn't exist on Facebook. Sure, folks will still use all their social networks for finding jobs and the like but if you're doing a search, you might not want to start on Facebook but if you do you'll probably get a few invites to sign up on LinkedIn.
It seems the wii has its own market niche leaning strongly on fitness games but I also assume that some of the zumba and just dance sales were the kinect version. It would be interesting to know how those two split as a comparison of wii vs kinect and perhaps kinect vs regular xbox controller. It does seem pretty clear that couch potato play is more popular than either wii or kinect but perhaps we just need a title like "Battle of Yoga Masters 4: the Kama Sutra Warrior".
I think the allure of sports games is that it allows fans to feel they have a greater sense of participation. Of course it means buying the next version next year because of the updated player list, imagine the humiliation when your mates come over to play only to point out that the roster for the sports team from their area is wrong! The horror.
It's hard to believe this is over a decade old but it seems apt.

What makes me wonder is why you assume anyone needs something to hide in order to have a desire to not have some arse sniffing corporate/government lackey following them around. I'm sure if GI Goog wanted to know what I had for lunch they can analyze my shit but that doesn't mean I won't flush the toilet.
Congrats, at only a few miles from downtown LA my old Time Warner "broadband" could be handily beaten in either direction by a good ISDN line most days. The new Verizon line is much better on the download but an ISDN would still beat it on upload speeds. Needless to say, I don't voip much over the "broadband" and do most of it over the t-mob data link.
That only happens when the house doesn't do the odds right and sets the quarter slot machine to pay out an average of $10 for every 39 pulls of the lever. Now I won't pull the lever 4 million times trying to win a million dollars but a company with half million arms might.
That said with an insurance policy being a private contract, I don't know of any law stopping any person or company from taking out a life insurance policy on anyone else at any time for any reason. The caveat is, of course, that should that policy pay out under suspicious circumstances, the police will have a rather interesting set of questions for the beneficiary. It doesn't make it less morally questionable but business wise it looks more like an anti-pension in that the company gets a monetary gain if the employee dies before retirement rather than after.
In the US, Apple would most likely have to sue at the state level or make some quick phone calls to their congressional lackeys^W legislators to get some laws passed. As it stands only about 20 states recognize rights of publicity. In California it extends for 70 years after death and in Illinois it is 100 years. In the other 30 states, you would have to sue to find out what the judges think. As for the rest of the world, I can't imagine it would be much less murky.
Of course this assumes that Steve left his rights of publicity to Apple in order for them to even have standing in the case. Alternatively, Apple might play the valiant knight and be willing to back any case the family would choose to raise. PR wise, I don't see much of an upshot to the former option but who knows, Apple certainly has been keeping the lawyers of the world well fed of late so maybe they are only concerned with stimulating the legal economy.
Sorry John, here's the big red flag back at ya. I don't see where Tony asked for cheap or "not too big". Considering "too big" is very much a personal matter and I might even surmise the smallest cheap DSLR is "too big". A quick look online shows a Rebel T3 priced nearly the same as the NEX-C3 but I'd say it wasn't small enough.
Personally speaking, the Lumix gf3 has both the missus and me wanting to take more pictures because it's something that can easily carry every day as small is my main concern. Oh, this may come as a shock but I only carry a single lens; I have others that I may break out for special occasions like weddings or a vacation to Angkor Wat but mostly it's one lens, the smallest one actually. If one day I am as good as the tool, I'll consider moving up but I expect sensor technology will easily outpace me so I may even get to move to a smaller size camera. I'll finish with the mention that the missus insisted on getting the gf3 (damn my bad luck) after using my g2 because the g2 was "too big" and is capable of taking better pictures than we are.
I really like riding tip 5;
"When you first press the safety switch, Bullet will assume an upright position as fast as it can, even if you are in the way. So don't be in the way (it can run into your ankles or run over your foot)!"
I'm assuming, considering the seat height, standing to the side and not square on while powering in on is a given.
Exactly, ideas aren't patentable, inventions are. While you don't actually have to build one you have to show that you can build one. I guess Apple's reasoning is that because they can't package a 1968 Eldorado to fit in your pocket and fuel cells can be made that small makes it more practical but by some distortion of reality doesn't make it more obvious.
Sorry Apple, this doesn't pass the sniff test. Not only is it fairly obvious but it was probably done a long time ago in some combat theater by some quick thinking soldier with half a jeep and a bullet in the battery of his SCR-300... perhaps even my Grandpa. Cheers Gramps.
"geared towards stealing the US's technology and economic secrets"
Seriously? I'll go along with the technology bit as it could be useful but why would they steal economic secrets? Oh, to use as a guide of what not to do. I get it now.
I'll leave the comment about dark visitors, lunar cycles and the missus for another day as she might read this. Oh shit!
Go ahead with a big cylindrical reel mower. Start with a 36 inch wide snow blower with tracks, change the blades, up the gearing and power it with an old air cooled VW engine. It will sure keep the lawn tidy if the second stage is up to tossing everything, even the neighbors cat, into the neighbors yard.
