Re: China is not a democracy

As far as I can tell, the US isn't one either. It has always pretended to be one, but whatever it ought to be considered now, a democracy it ain't.

Actually the US has never been a democracy. In fact the word democracy doesn't even appear in the US Constitution so it's hard to understand why so many people get it wrong. Per Article IV Section 4 of the Constitution the US is a republic. Besides, two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner isn't necessarily the sort of government people should really strive for.

Re: Babysitters are for babies

So no like people working in the tv industry they are not assholes.

Right, TV folk are just self-important, narcissistic, self promoters and completely unlike these Youtubers you speak of. Oh wait...

On another note, I've concluded we're dealing with a parody of the PDP-11. Clearly lacking the skills of Ocean's 11.

Eddy Ito

Re: Get me a babysitter

@veti, I was thinking exactly the same thing. I came up with either someone is really butt hurt or it's an attempt at parody and I haven't quite figured which. At this point it's boring so I'll leave the figuring to pewdeepi or whomever.

Musk's popstar girlfriend Grimes croons about next-gen AI, plus more machine-learning news

Re: Why not instead

But I wonder what problem AI lawyers are intended to solve, and for whom?

Simple, upwards of 90% of lawyer work is simply filling out and filing forms because the entire legal code was written by lawyers and every attempt was made to intentionally obscure it from the typical person. Having AI lawyers means the real lawyers can release the paralegals in the office and save a few bucks.

Have no fear, there won't be any AIs blustering away at juries any time soon because they still haven't mastered the art of tear jerking. I'm sure they're working on it though.

What about successful suicides?

Interesting question, but since suicide isn't a crime in the US there was no need for the DOJ to track the recidivism statistics. Perhaps you should propose a study, I'm sure it's a near lock to get government funding.

Eddy Ito

Re: Waiting for The Dail Mail et al...

Why wait? It's actually worse, so much worse.

Eddy Ito

In 2014 the US. DOJ put out a recidivism study covering 30 states from 2005 to 2010 that showed sex offenders aren't any more likely than other groups to repeat offend within 5 years, the length of the study. In fact, the only two groups of offenders less likely to repeat offend were homicides and DUIs.

Study (PDF) here and there's handy tables on page 8 (Table 8) and page 9 (Tables 9 & 10) breaking it down somewhat.

Unfortunately table 10 doesn't break it out quite as far as it could but it seems that most of the recidivism arrests are "Public Order Offenses" which could simply be mean they missed the bus that takes them to their meeting with their parole officer.

The moral of the story is don't ever help the police. The cops gave up any reasonable suspicion once they admitted the windows were fine so when they ask to search your car, because they're bored and want to go fishing, the correct response is "no". It's also best to follow it up with "am I free to go?"

Re: Hostage situations...

Let's put ourselves in the cop's shoes. If you have a hostage situation, why do you think the hostage taker is going to come out alone and in plain sight to see what's up? He's either the dumbest hostage taker in the world and has unwittingly just let the hostages go, he's a hostage who's been released, or he's totally clueless as to what you're talking about and likely can't hear or understand the vague and often contradictory commands being given.

What's big, blue, and short on Intel? The supercomputer world's podium: USA tops Top500 with IBM Power9

Eddy Ito

Re: It's in the list.

Agreed, it's quite toasty indeed but still remarkable since many others in the top tier do far worse. Tianhe-2A, ranked 4th, uses twice the power and only manages half the score and only three others in the top 20 managed over 10 TFlops/Watt with Japan's ABCI coming very close at 14.4 TF/W.

Hmm... I wonder what the mark has to be to make mining bitcoin profitable.

Eddy Ito

That Summit machine is quite impressive as it also ranked 3rd on the Green 500 list turning out 14.7 GFlops/Watt. While it's a way behind the leader, Shoubu system B which turned in 17.6 GFlops/Watt, it's still quite a feat to pull off #1 overall and #3 in green especially when the Sierra machine ranked 6th on the green list at 12.7 GFlops/Watt.

As an aside, I really wish they wouldn't label the column GFlops/Watts as it potentially confuses the issue - how many watts?

Re: Inquiring minds

I think I see the problem between the EU and US. I'm pretty sure it's the common letter that causes the confusion. Let's see if I can explain graphically.

EU-----US > EU---US > EU-US > EUUS > EUS!!!

See, it's really hard to determine where one ends and the other starts.

Granted, both do it with the entire world and in a much less direct way than Russia and China do with actual land grabs but the principle is the same.

AMD's shares get in a plane, take off and soar to 12,000 ft – then throw open the door, and fall into the cool rushing air

Eddy Ito

Re: Looks like idiot machines

The thing is the GPU drop was quite predictable as it coincides with the current price of bitcoin and small miners being pushed out since the cost of electricity makes mining with GPUs unprofitable in many if not most locations.

Look back to mid August, AMD was about the same price as today and it rises to over 30 by mid September and has been dropping through October. Meanwhile BTC had just finished it's drop in mid August and has largely been flat ever since which means many non-ASIC miners are losing money on GPU based rigs.

It's pretty clear a bunch of analysts missed that even though it's much easier to buy a GPU today than it was six or nine months ago.

Historically the Chinese actually did quite well in the innovation arena. Granted they didn't keep up with the control freaks of the world and they wound up subjugated by one imperial power or another and ultimately got stuck with their own control freak in Mao. They're only really starting to try to fix that but Xi is still a control freak and hasn't grasped the concept that you can't command innovation.

It does have an odd choice of features since it does have GPS/GLONASS as well as accelerometer, gyro, and compass but apparently nothing to use them as I wouldn't call that screenshot a proper mapping app. Once it's tethered, does it send the data (NMEA?) to the device with the mapping software along the tether link or does that need a separate connection?

Either way given they're going for the minimalism vibe I'm surprised they didn't go with an e-paper display.

US mobe owners will get presidential text message at 2:18 pm Eastern Time

Eddy Ito

That's the crux of the problem. My phone has AMBER Alerts, Severe Threat Alerts, Extreme Threat Alerts, and Presidential Alerts. So in theory, the Presidential level is even worse than an Extreme Threat. What does that mean exactly? Personally, I'd rather go on about my day and be atomized rather than know 90 seconds ahead of time so I have time to kiss my arse goodbye. Let's face it, if my image is going to be etched into the stone behind me by an ICBM I'd rather future scientists see it and know that I was caught walking along instead of wondering, "Was this guy licking his balls? Why would he do it here? Wait, is that another one doing the same thing while looking at some rectangular object?"

Sorry, I just don't see the point.

Holy smokes! US watchdog sues Elon Musk after he makes hash of $420 Tesla tweet

Eddy Ito

Re: Margin Calling..

I'm kinda curious how much shorts could make given this outcome was predicted very shortly after the tweets.

Well if a short could borrow all of Tesla's stock, sell it, and then Tesla shuts down it would mean the short could make whatever the market cap was for Tesla when they sold the stock. The reason is that after the shut down the stock becomes worthless and the short wouldn't have to buy it back to return to the original lender.
