Sony

In the early 90's, I had a Sony mobile (getting too old to remember the model) that was a dead ringer for this, except it was dark green and you couldn't see the numbers in the dark.

'orses

I've got a 1909 Strand Magazine that compares 'orses to the new-fandangled motor-cars. The comparison revealed that 'orses needed to be replaced every 30 miles on a long journey, left a lot of smelly environmental keepsakes around (24 tons daily in London apparently), were very dangerous at one end due to 'teeth' and at the other with 'hooves', tended to violently react to strange noises/lights/animals/humans/americans, needed overnight covering and tending/feeding 24/7/365. Oh, and tended to die a lot.

In cars 'all' you theoretically had to worry about was carrying a spare can of petrol.

Advance

"You can be sure on a design like this, incredible attention has been paid to saving every ounze in weight as possible."

It's a technology demonstration. Of course everything is going to be lined up to give it the best chance.

Once they can prove the technology can do something they can ask for more budget. Once other companies cotton on to the fact there is a market you'll get lighter materials, better photo-cells, more efficient motors, lighter and longer lasting batteries etc. All of which might be useful in some other areas as well.

Let's review this in ten years, m'kay?

Only a few months...

Every time I hear the phrase "it shortened the war by x months/years" a shiver runs up my spine. German rocket and aircraft technology was so far advanced we could have had REAL problems dealing with the ground-to-air and air-to-air missiles against our bomber fleets, which until D-Day was the only realistic way of striking back. Very, very close-run thing

If RAF Bomber Command and the USAF had not created huge logistical and militarily intensive problems for Germany by their aggressive bombing campaigns, simultaneously keeping a large proportion of the Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe away from the Russians on the Eastern front, then that German research and engineering almost certainly would have given them the ability to completely change the course of the war. Remember that next time someone says 'War Crime'.

Without full air-superiority the D-Day landings might have evolved into the slogging war of attrition that Churchill and his WWI experienced Generals most feared. It nearly happened in Normandy! How much longer would the war have taken? What weapons would Germany been able to bring to bear or develop in the meantime? Remember they had several projects that were aimed at bombing America. A winged A4 (V2) on top of a larger first stage and Horten HO 229 Flying Wing were only the start.

Perhaps an unconditional surrender of Germany might not have been possible, a brokered peace or cease-fire being the probable alternative. Many American Generals would then have been quite happy to ally with Germany against who they saw as the 'real' problem, Soviet Russia.

Cases

Given the many 3rd companies making a living supplying accessories to the iPhone/iTouch who see a huge market for the iPad, what's the betting that someone will design a clip on case with a webcam in it and connection/power via the docking port? Put a pull-out stand on it and voila, instant video conferencing with no nasal passages dominating the proceedings.

Lesson from recent history

"It is absolutely bog-standard nazi strategy to lie and manufacture a supposed threat. You have seen it time and again in history; they even bloody admitted it for crying out loud, there's that faomous quote from Goebbels about how the population can always be led to war."

Methinks you are being a little economic with history here, as the majority of the terror groups based in Europe who actually blew people up and fired guns at people over the past 50 years were left-wing. The Red Army Faction (RAF), Baader-Meinhof, ETA, PIRA, CIRA, RIRA, INLA, INRA, The Red Brigades, FRC (Italy), Epanastatikos Agonas (Greece), ELF (UK), The Angry Brigade (UK), Red Terror (Spain), among many others. I think little old Belgium had their own left-wing terror group at one time, which says a lot.

The quote is actually from Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

NuLabour to a T, I reckon.

Makes you wonder if 911 was just an excuse, doesn't it?

And....

Let us not also forget that the 64Gb model would need different production runs, the need to be kept apart from the other models, more space on the shelves and yes, a little bit more profit for Apple (the company that has done more in three years to kick-start the phone industry than all the others put together have done in 10 years), its distributors and the retail shops to share between them.

Of course they make more money out of it, otherwise WHY DO IT?

I did it!

Did this about a year ago when I upgraded to ADSL-2 8Mb/sec line (not BT Broadband).

Before I put it in and after the line had had it's run-in period (10 days), about 6Mb/sec.

After, about 11Mb/sec with a 1.5Mb/sec upload speed.

Very, very well worth it.

All OS's are not the same

I'm writing this on a Apple Mag G4 tower. It has had sucessively OS 9, OS X 10.0 (Dual Boot with OS 9), OS X 10.1 (Dual Boot with OS 9),OS X 10.2 (Dual Boot with OS 9), OS X 10.3 Panther (Dual Boot with OS 9), OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and OS X 10.5 (Leopard). At no point has the machine slowed down or had any other problem associated with installing a new OS over the top of the old one.

On another machine (Mac Pro Tower) I wanted a larger hard drive, so I installed 10.5 on a second drive and just used the built-in Migration Assistant to move all my applications and data across from the original 10.4 drive. Any Apple programs that were updated in 10.5 were left behind on the 10.4 drive automatically.

Mac users look on in fascinated wonder at the self-imposed cluster-fuck that is Windows. Mac OS is not perfect, but it's light years ahead of anything MS can do or what Windows users can aspire to.
