Truth over the lesser of two evils

Part of the role of journalists is to critically analyse the facts rather than to just parrot information they are presented with. If you would only attack this report with the same gusto as if it were an Apple product.

Acquiescence is silently condoning their claims which are encouraging a rift in international relations. Being critical makes you pro-truth not pro-Russian. The Russians (government not people) are equally guilty of deception, from evidently fake MH370 satellite photos to bloodless "assassinations" of ambassadors.

Your internet history on sale to highest bidder: US Congress votes to shred ISP privacy rules

YARR
Flame

Is it April 1st yet?

What a ridiculous law! If this had been in the headlines sooner there would have been time to co-ordinate a legal protest in the public interest. I can't see how anyone representing the public could have passed such an obtrusive law - our internet history should be considered private information except what you choose to share.

What's to stop someone buying this data and publishing it for all to see? If everyone could see their neighbour's internet history that would surely wake people up to demand their privacy. Any ISP that promises not to share your internet history without charging a premium will corner the market. But I guess not everyone has a choice of ISP.

So are you advocating the fate of a country is decided solely by outsiders who must have unrestricted freedom to move there? Those living there who built, contributed and defended their country have no right to decide what their country is to become?

Must we never question the immigrant or the coloniser? Why effort did they make to positively change their homeland before they decided they had to leave? How will they / do they intend to change the country they are moving to? Is there not a trade-off between the interests of the immigrant and the resident population? A trade takes place when both parties benefit, why not the same for immigration?

Should the resident population of a country be free to decide their future, or must the immigration criteria for all countries be restricted to economic reasons only? Is the only legitimate ideal for a nation to be greater prosperity? What happens when everyone in a nation is content with their level of prosperity? If different people have different ideals, should they not divide into nations that reflect their different ideals?

The naming conventions could get confusing, I'd call it the zero-two or zero-three etc.

New UK laws address driverless cars insurance and liability

YARR

Re: Sounds rather flawed to me

The idea that someone has to maintain their car (including software) properly is just extending the MOT process to include software and patching.

Wrong analogy. Software does not degrade through use like hardware. Network connected devices need software updates to guard against network-borne attacks. Non-networked devices only need software updates to fix bugs that affect their operation (or changes to their operating environment).

If software updates are legally required for non-networked devices, that would be a legal admission that the old code was not fit for purpose - the software equivalent of a product recall. In this case, the software vendor would then become liable for past accidents involving vehicles that ran the old code. To avoid such liability, the software vendor cannot admit that the old code is unsafe, just less efficient or less functional.

If vehicles had to run the latest code by law, your car would not allow you to start a journey until it had checked for updates. Also it would have to maintain constant network access while driving to stay up to date. The moment a bug is reported in the code, to avoid liability they would have to transmit a network message to halt all vehicles until a fix has been produced, and downloaded to your vehicle.

To maximise road safety, computers must control the whole environment - i.e. human drivers, cyclists, and maybe pedestrians are prevented from using the road. To attain this they may use soft methods like artificially increased insurance premiums for human drivers, despite there being no inherent reason why human drivers should be more dangerous (write off more value + cause more injuries / fatalities) than than at present. A free market for insurers would keep premiums for human drivers comparable to what they are now.

However when accidents occur between human drivers v self-driving vehicles, drivers will be in opposition with corporate lawyers so are more likely to lose legal cases. That said, corporate lawyers may deliberately accept liability at first to win public support, then turn up the pressure when there are few human drivers left on the road.

humans will need to merge themselves with machines, lest they are replaced by them

If machines out-class humans, but they receive no compensation, then the cost of buying their products and services will fall. As our cost of living falls, we wont have to work as much, so the remaining human-jobs can be shared out, giving us all more free time. The age of retirement should start to fall and we can all enjoy more of our lives doing what we want to do, rather than what someone-who-has-more-money-than-us wants us to do. Eventually no one will have to work and we wont need money.

The idea that humans will become obsolete assumes there is a need for ever more work to be done, but human need is the motive for work, so when our needs are met we wont have to work. The only reason this wont happen is if a few greedy people demand to control how everyone else spends their time, by continuing to use money to limit access to resources that should be in abundance / or intentionally destroying them through conflict.

Ethical according to whom?

Is there an agreed standard on what is ethical? As explained earlier in this thread, people often hold self-contradictory ethical views without realising it.

Historically a nation is a local population who defend an exclusive territory to provide for their current and future needs. A nation guarantees a distinct people a future place in the world, and independence, regardless of their wealth or material aspirations.

In modern America, Americans have no say over who can become American or indeed whether anyone else should have that right. Current politically-correct laws and globalist ethics / propaganda side with immigrants. Americans have no say over who can colonise their country, and consequently the future face of their nation, despite being the people who have historically invested in and defended their nation.

Is it unethical if a current majority within a country are opposed to being displaced, such as America's present Christian majority being replaced by Muslims in coming decades? Should larger populations in global terms have an assumed right to displace smaller populations who are presently a majority in their own countries? Should the wealthiest be able to acquire ever more property from those poorer than them? A nation defended remains the collective property of a population and guarantees freedom from slavery by a wealthy elite, or dispossession by outsiders.

Another article quoting Julian Assange and Craig Murray:

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/dec/10/cia-concludes-russia-interfered-to-help-trump-win-election-report

Craig Murray, the former UK ambassador to Uzbekistan, who is a close associate of Assange, called the CIA claims “bullshit”, adding: “They are absolutely making it up.”

“I know who leaked them,” Murray said. “I’ve met the person who leaked them, and they are certainly not Russian and it’s an insider. It’s a leak, not a hack; the two are different things.

“If what the CIA are saying is true, and the CIA’s statement refers to people who are known to be linked to the Russian state, they would have arrested someone if it was someone inside the United States.

“America has not been shy about arresting whistleblowers and it’s not been shy about extraditing hackers. They plainly have no knowledge whatsoever.”

So we can all rest assured that the new "Countering Disinformation And Propaganda Act” and "fake-news" filtering wont be mis-used to cover inconvenient truths.

Facebook hires Hillary Clinton to lead assault on fake news*

YARR
Big Brother

Problem - Reaction - Solution & fake v false

All TBTB have to do to introduce soft censorship is plant some fake news stories of their own. So be very suspicious - demand Hillary explain exactly which "fake news" she means so we can trace their origin.

Secondly - what is a clear definition of "fake news" as opposed to "false news" (which the MSM is full of when it parrots news from one source). If fake news is defined as intentionally false (like satire), then will fake-news censorship permit unintentionally false news or cases where the facts are in dispute? How can you tell if news is deliberately false?

Often the first reporter on a scene will report what they or others witness, but these "facts" are later "corrected" with what we are told to believe. The original news story is then false. The facts concerning many events like acts of terrorism or the downing of MH17 often remain in dispute - so will "fake news" filtering block alternative news articles that cover events from a different perspective?

Re: Trumpity Trump

@ A/C 1

You don't get to "believe" in science or not. It's not a fucking belief system, like politics or religion.

Science is an unbiased search for truth based on evidence, always open to new ideas. But most modern scientific research is funded by governments and corporations so the areas of research are directed by the motives of people with political agendas or the self-interest of a wealthy few. Working scientists depend on this funding for their living so are disinclined to oppose those funding their research. Surveys of scientific opinion can be easily biased using techniques like loaded questions, limited choice answers, ignoring responses that don't answer certain questions etc. to present a false impression of scientific consensus. If climate change was established Science they wouldn't need to conduct any surveys. Science-ism is when an agenda is presented as scientific, when it isn't established Science.

The few who speak out are usually those who are no longer dependent on this centralised funding. Here Johnny Ball presents a viewpoint which is opposed to the climate change fear being pushed through the education system.

Re: Utterly shameful

'hate' is rather overused, but in the case of the Daily Heil, I think 'hate' is a mild word. The foul acidic, lying bile that spews out of the Mail can't be described any other way

It's not my intention to defend the DM, but when I look at it I just see an unexceptional but top-selling paper targeted at a particular segment of the population. It's news stories seem distinctly ordinary to me, with the odd alarmist story for sensationalism. I can think of many things more deserving of being labelled "hate", for example the endless commenters spreading their seemingly unjustified hatred towards the DM on these forums. I guess everyone has to have their own oppositional 'hate' target to validate the moral righteousness of their own opinion, though it be a fictional construct of their own mind.

then what's the right word to use for a 'newspaper' which goes to absurd lengths to vilify people whose only sin is to have been born on a patch of land across a body of water?

Are you sure they vilify all foreigners just for being foreign, or do they justifiably vilify people who are harming the future of our country?

Illegal immigrants (who by definition have no right to come here) but arrogantly assume they can, should rightly be called imperialist invaders / occupiers who disrespect that our ancestors fought for our respective countries and not for the rights of others to take our country from us. Most foreigners respect our independence but a few (like the EU) want to dictate our laws and undermine our country.

We've started wars against whole nations of people who never invaded us (but our government just invent a reason to fight them), so when people do invade our country, we are entirely justified to be angry and want to defend our country. This isn't "hate" it's righteous defiance.

So the government had a choice, keep a load of scrap iron afloat for dubious propaganda purposes at a high cost, or flog it off and be done with it

It wasn't scrap iron before they spent a lot of money removing various systems. It was a functioning warship which could have been kept in reserve at minimal cost until it's replacement ships were commissioned. Historically foreign nations have bought our old ships and kept them operational for decades, so there's plenty of life left in them.

If the majority of the country disagrees with you, perhaps the problem is with you, not them

Perhaps. The proof is in whether their views are founded on facts and reason. Often the majority are opinionated but not well informed and not capable of good reasoning - hence democracy can result in poor decision making.

If those in authority think the public cannot be trusted they deny us our freedoms, which empowers them and dis-empowers us. Yet we are all fallible so the public have no reason to trust authority with greater powers - the more they attempt to take power away from us the greater the incentive for us to take it back.

Corporate IT recyclers will often physically destroy hard drives before selling on the computer, but when when the SSD chips are soldered to the mainboard this isn't possible. Hence computers with built in SSDs will have to be physically destroyed to protect user's data. Not so good for the environment.

Re: Brexploitation

"the value of any currency relative to any other is determined by the market" ... " It's going to be a fact of life for a long time"

The yuan is pegged to the dollar, The Chinese government can choose to intentionally overvalue or undervalue their currency to their benefit. When you allow the value of your currency to be determined by market forces, that means the wealthy have greater influence and can manipulate the currency to their benefit rather than to the benefit of your country.

YARR

Re: Brexploitation

The change in currency value was caused by currency speculators, not Brexit (political independence) which hasn't happened yet. The productivity of workers in Britain v the EU has not changed one jot, so in real value terms nothing has changed. The currency change is because we have a non-asset backed currency whose value we allow to be determined by gamblers.

Why single out Farage, when the other major political parties have all had leadership elections post-Brexit? A significant event like Brexit requires a major change in policy for each party which is usually a prime opportunity for new leadership. In the case of UKIP, Farage has achieved exactly what he set out to achieve so it's now appropriate for someone else to chart a new future for the party.

It's obvious to anyone with perception that the EU's goal is to create a superstate, centralising power for an elite and disempowering the populace. Free trade was used to convince us to join, along with false promises that we would always remain an independent country. The truth is we don't need to surrender our sovereignty to free trade. All those baseless comments claiming that Brexit is "wrong" or "silly" are meaningless without justification. If you really think that short term price rises caused by speculators are a bigger issue than who makes our laws, then I wonder is there anything you wouldn't sell off for a price?
