Wrist SLAP: Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch hands-on

jai

Re: Wrong on so many levels...

6. It has to be turned on each time you want to use it.

i've been using an iPod nano on a watch strap for the last 18 months or so and it's surprising how much of a problem it isn't having to turn it on to check the time on a watch.

just goes to show, i guess, how rarely i find myself needing to know the time (sitting in front of a computer for the majority of every day, it's far easier just to look in the bottom/top corner of the screen depending on if i'm at work/home

but the rest of points i totally agree with

not Android, i mean KitKat - i'm going to go get one now!

Re: Cheapskate

well a single donation is only going to be news for a very short time, and it isn't going to encourage others to donate

this way, as you say, it encourages more of us to put our hands in our pockets too in order to assure the museum gets £2mil to spend instead of just one.

nostalgia

i loved this game when i was a kid. possibly the first game i paid for with my own money?

i spent ages playing it on the mac - no idea what i was doing and i don't think i really got very far. but days and days of going round and round in seeming circles suddenly rewarded when i discovered something i'd previously missed that opened a new area and then i'd repeat the process of wondering what i should be doing next.

i liked the iOS re-release too - i think i instantly seemed to get further in that after a few hours than i ever did as a kid. i feel i've accomplished something in growing up :)

That's a bit of a stretch, isn't it? Surely it was Debra Fischer of Yale University in Nature magazine that previous revealed that, as stated in the El Reg article you linked to. All El Reg did was regurgitate the news.

How much will Apple cough for ebook conspiracy? Trial starts May 2014

jai

Apparently the calculation works out to be about 500 million bucks:

http://www.macrumors.com/2013/07/25/apple-could-owe-500-million-after-being-found-guilty-in-e-book-antitrust-case/

It's a lot of money, but it's not exactly going to cause Apple any pain, considering the mountain of cash they have in the bank.

More painful to them will be the restrictions on being able to enter into similar contracts again in the next 5 years, particularly if they're looking to expand the TV show distribution and iRadio, etc etc.

Microsoft cuts number of countries that will have Xbox One by Christmas

jai

But why?

It can't be because the demand is so great that all their inventory is going to be taken up by those countries that are getting it on release, surely?

Peak Apple? HOGWASH! Apple is 'extremely undervalued,' says Icahn

jai

false "facts" within the article

Apple's shares have been sliding into the doldrums since the death of its adulated cofounder, Steve Jobs. Its stock price has shed around 22 per cent in the past year

I'm sorry, but THAT is hogwash right there.

Jobs died on the 5th October where AAPL stock was priced at 377.37

Today, the stock is priced at 489.

The "Peak" above 700 that you keep referring to was 6 months ago - well after he died, and well within Cook's reign.

jai

Re: @Frank14 Parasites

the trouble is the market is too stupid to realise they're being manipulated.

PEAK Apple: Cupertino's hopes died with Steve Jobs, says Larry Ellison

jai

poor comparison

the Apple of the 90's is not the Apple we have now.

and Tim Cook is certainly not John Scully.

the only thing that's the same between the Apple of the 90s and the Apple of today is that Jobs isn't running it. Everything else about the two moments in time is different. And for someone like Ellison, whom so many people seem to hold in high regard, not to realise that, is rather telling.

I suspect he knew that was the only way he'd get any headline action. Nobody reports the uncontroversial any more. Peak Apple? Peak journalism more like.

gotta applaud Netflix for this move.

Publishers stand behind Apple in ebook price-fixing fight

jai

Re: Oh the irony

i think the publishers fear is that Amazon are now free to discount books as much as they like, because there's no competition. so the publishers will see all their profits disappear now.

Also, as Apple are now banned from using this model for 5 years, they'll be entering a price war with amazon to get the ebook business, so the two of them will drive ebook pricing through the floor.

great for customers, yes

but rubbish for authors, who'll get even less after the publishers take their cut

Re: $695!

Apple patents laser, incandescent projector for laptops, smartphones

jai

Re: what happened to pico?

but that's the thing. projectors only really work well in a dark room and projecting on a white screen. my friend as one bolted to the ceiling in his lounge. great for watching movies, yes, but a pain in the proverbial to spend the time clearing space, setting it up, to watch, and even then, it's only great for the two people sitting in the right place, for the rest that are off to the side it's like sitting too far near the front at the cinema. takes the fun out of just having a quick game on the playstation.

whereas the screen on your phone/tablet/laptop works in all light conditions and is usable in any room of the house, regardless of the ghastly patterned wallpaper your mum put up.

South Korea: We're 'concerned' that Obama saved Apple from ban

I suspect this the White House was thinking less of "Apple vs Samsung" and more "America (f$%k yeah!) vs anyone else"

There's not many american voters in South Korea...

Tick-tock, Apple: Obama has just days to stop US iPhone iPad sales ban

jai

Well the iPad2 is still for sale from Apple. And the iPhone 4 & 4S.

But presumable, only until the next iPhone and iPad models are released in a month or two. So Apple aren't really going to feel much pain if the ban goes ahead.

Also, I thought I read previously that it's a ban on importing these items, not on selling the stock currently already within the US.

But yes, if it helps to deter the ridiculous patent lawsuits, then it would seem like a good thing.

Smartwatch makers: You need apps to beat Apple

jai

Re: Well..

Well.. that's you.

Me, I do want apps on my watch. I want my phone to be the device that does the internet connection and any heavy processing, and the watch to be my first interface to the phone. if i need more detail than the watch provides, then I can pull out the phone and view the equivalent app on the bigger screen.

charging two devices? I'm already charging a phone, a tablet, a laptop, and my ipod nano which is on a wriststrap and acts as a watch and podcast player, so another device wouldn't really impact my daily schedule. in fact, it'd replace my use for the ipod nano and so there wouldn't be any difference.

But that's me. We're all different.

xbox marketing

marketing now rests with a completely different operation

Dead STEVE JOBS was a CROOK – judge

jai

@ David Neil Re: Article title

And how exactly do you libel the dead?

Take your time

I wasn't saying that Jobs was being libeled, I'm saying it is the Judge, whose words are being misquoted in the article headline, but still attributed to the Judge as having said them. Actually, perhaps libel isn't the correct legal term there?

But essentially El Reg is declaring that the judge outright said that Steve Jobs is a criminal.

Whereas, from what i've read elsewhere on this comments page, the judge accused Apple's management team, but did not specify Jobs by name. That's not what the article headline implies. So, wouldn't the judge have recourse to claim that El Reg is defaming her by implying she's the type of person to defame the deceased?

jai

@Squander Two Re: "Did the judge actually call out Steve Jobs personally as being a criminal?"

But that's the assistant attorney general in charge, Bill Baer, that's saying that. the article headline specifically says it's the judge specifically.

I'm not arguing whether or not Jobs is guilty of attempting price fixing, as the evidence suggests he was, I'm arguing the misreporting of the facts in the headline that suggests the Judge specifically called out a dead person and branded them a criminal.
