US Appeal Court slaps Apple for trying to shake antitrust monitor

jai

"Court slaps Apple"?

It's not really a slap, is it?

The court have restricted the monitor to only asking questions and for evidence that relates to the business he is there to monitor.

Surely this was the strategy of Apple's legal team. Ask for something outrageous, like getting rid of the monitor all together, and instead the court has agreed to what they really want, which is the monitor not having carte blanche on what he can look at.

Re: Floppy Eject

And we all know software never fails

Sure, if there was a crash, you're floppy disk was still in there when the machine booted. And if it wasn't a bootable disk, the machine would automatically eject it, and then it would continue to boot. What's the problem?

jai

Re: Wired ethernet is not a rarity for laptops

in our office, only the ethernet ports that are in use are enabled. ethernet is all locked down, i guess they don't want anyone just wandering in and plugging their laptop into the network.

and even then, they're hidden under floor panels or in the cable runs underneath the middle of each set of desks, so even if you can get the networks team to switch one on for you, it's a right pain in the proverbal to find out what it's number is, let alone get an ethernet cable plugged in.

whereas the wireless shows up, and works with the same user/pass that i log into my work pc with.

far, far easier to use for the general user.

jai

Re: Floppy Eject

Oops I left the disk in the MAC when I powered off. Darn now I have to power up again.

Not a problem with a Mac, because when you powered it down, it would eject the disc before it shut down. That's because the eject was software driven, not reliant upon a mechanical device.

@jb99

Because at least in part it's *his* company

Are you sure you aren't confusing the difference between shares and stock?

The headline says shares - although possibly El Reg is confusing the two?

Or maybe it's Icann that's confused the two and thinks he has more rights than he really does.

Stock means you have a piece of ownership. Shares just mean you've given the company some money in the past to increase it's capital then, in the hope that in the future the company is worth more so you'll receive more money back when the share matures (or you sell it on to someone else for a profit in the mean time).

Shares - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Share_%28finance%29

Stock - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stock

Which makes no financial sense.

Not only is he suggesting they give it away, to people including himself, but that they incur debt by borrowing to do it.

I understand his motives. He just wants to get richer, quicker, instead of running the risk that the market's natural movements may devalue his stock or may increase it's value, but both other a period of time.

What I don't understand is why any company in the past has paid attention to him?

It's not like they owe him anything is it? That how buying stock works. Your reward for taking the risk in investing is if the market goes up before you sell them.

Re: highly dubious

I don't think they have consistent design direction.

but the point about the lightening connector makes sense, no?

they moved the headphone jack to the bottom because there is space there - it also means, if you put the phone in your trouser pocket while listening on head/earphones, the phone is upside down in your pocket - so when you reach in to take it out and look at it, it is the right way up in your hand.

that's the kind of weird attention to detail that Apple love. would seem odd for them to abandon in within one design iteration, no?

jai

highly dubious

Weren't these already disproved yesterday? All the features on these photos resemble the pre-iPhone5 design.

http://www.macrumors.com/2014/01/08/iphone-6-frame-photos/

- The part appears to be a midframe such as that found in earlier iPhone models, allowing components to be attached to both sides of the part before being enclosed in the device's shell. Apple did away with midframe components as of the iPhone 5, opting for a unibody rear shell design that allows components to be mounted directly to the shell, yielding a thinner design. A return to a design requiring a midframe part would seem unlikely given Apple's emphasis on thinness.

- The frame seems to show accommodation for a headphone jack at the same end of the device where a circular feature presumably corresponding to the device's rear camera is positioned, undoubtedly the top end. With the shift to the narrower Lightning connector in the iPhone 5, Apple shifted the location of the iPhone's headphone jack to the bottom edge of the device, matching the position seen on the iPod touch since its launch and allowing the headphone cable to naturally fall so as to not interfere with viewing of the device's screen. Moving the headphone jack back to the top edge of the device for the iPhone 6 appears unlikely, though not impossible.

In the face of those apparent inconsistencies with Apple's design direction, there is essentially no evidence in favor of this part being from an iPhone, leaving only the original poster's claim as support. The part is rather unremarkable with what appears to be fairly poor finish quality, meaning that it could be from one of any number of devices in the Asian supply chain.
