Technical problems mar Barclays' PINSentry roll-out

jai
Flame

totally useless

so if you get mugged and someone nicks your bank card, it's likely you'll also be carrying your pinsentry so they'll take that too

although apparently any pinsentry unit will work with your card

i don't see how that makes it more secure - it's just the same as if i loose my bank card at the moment and someone picks it up

if someone has been able to phish your name, account details, the nth letter from your 'secret' passcode, the mothers maiden name and the age your cat died when you were a kid, then surely it's not beyond their means to have also cloned your bank card the last time you used it to buy petrol.

if most people use it at home, then what added security is it going to give? only to someone sitting outside snooping on your wifi i guess. but any man-in-the-middle systems won't be compromised by this

am also seriously thinking of ditching Barclays - i moved all my current accounts to an online bank because of those bloody stupid adverts and only keep the Barclays for the cashing cheques. am thinking of ditching that too now

terrible shame

one of the greatest British authors of all time? tis a sad blow to the nation - but as Ben said, Pterry's not gone yet, there are more books in the pipeline, and he's taking the new optimistically so we should too.

i've been to a few signings and everytime am awe-struck by the incredible numbers of people who turned up to queue in line, and the fact that Pterry would sit there and sign books until everyone was seen. i don't know of any other author, especially the successful ones, who appreciate their fans as much as Pratchett does.

all the best wishes to Terry and his family - here's hoping things go as well as possible, in these circumstances

Transformers director blames MS for HD DVD/Blu-ray format war

association with a strong brand???

"BD has the capacity advantage, while HD DVD has the benefit of being associated with a very strong brand: DVD"

since when is DVD a brand name? and i'm sure the movie buying public aren't so stupid as to be scared away from BluRay because it is a new name, but they'll flock towards HD DVD because they recognise the last 3 letters in the name??

that would only work if DVDs were no longer available and also if they could play HD DVDs in their old DVD players.

all three formats are disc technology. everyone is familiar with this "brand" of media because CD did all of the work there back in the 80s

delivery drivers

you guys are missing the whole point about delivery drivers. they won't use the signal to "drive to the 15th floor"

they'll use it to work out how many stairs they'll have to climb in order to deliver the parcel, and then just leave a We Called And You Were Out card stuck under the ground floor door

or just loose the parcel at the sorting office and save all the time and effort involved in driving to the block of flats in the first place

Apple's Leopard leaps into action

re BSOD

the issue is also with Logitec - their mouse control panel software has been found to install a part of that same 3rd party program without telling the user about it. so even people who never installed Unsanity's ApplicationEnhancer software also ran afoul of the bsod.

3rd party shareware blowing up on a new OS, you kind of expect it, it goes with the territory. and that's why you always upgrade to their latest versions because you never know what bugs they've fixed

But a company like Logitech, you'd have hoped they'd go to the effort of writing the code themselves, instead of using a core part of a 3rd-party shareware hack. At the very least, they should have released updates to their control panel software everytime that Unsanity updated theirs.

am just glad when my MX1000 gave up the ghost i replaced it with a wireless mighty mouse and not another Logitech mouse

Apple's Leopard rejects latest version of Java

jai

@buckmelter

"This is a show stopper for me, and I will have to revert to 10.4, since my job as a software engineer for Sun requires Java 6"

what professional developer worth their salt would upgrade their key development environment without first testing it on a backup/test machine? and who upgrades a work environment on the first weekend of a new OS being available anyway?

anyone with half a brain will wait for all the bugs to be ironed out by consumers and possibly for the first patch to come out and then try it out on a test environment before going ahead and upgrading their production machine.

Tool opens iPhone, iPod Touch via web

jai

possibly a bad idea

"The code uses a known vulnerability with firmware 1.1.1, which it subsequently patches."

so if it fixes the vulnerability, then how would you go about reversing the changes if you no longer wish to use the not-really-all-that-amazing-3rd-party-apps afterwards? and when Apple release 1.1.x with the killer must-have enhancement that you want, how do you go about applying a hack to revert your iPhone to pre-hack status? surely only a hardware reset which'll wipe all your data

also, while you have to respect there is some technical complexity probably involved in opening the machines via a web interface, it just makes it too easy doesn't it? which means that Apple will be bound to step in to fix it, which ultimately means it'll make it harder for the machines to be hacked in the future

(my main gripe here is that by the time i get my hands on an iPhone at the UK launch next month, it'll be impossible for me to load 3rd party apps and it'll all be the fault of this AppSnap!! damn their eyes!!)

How many $$$s does Apple make from an iPhone?

jai

re: Selling a service???

Apple don't sell a service to you the user. And you don't pay Apple for any service.

Apple sell you the hardware.

AT&T (and soon O2 and Orange etc) sell you the service of being able to use the phone networks and make calls and data transfers and voicemail etc etc. And you pay AT&T for that.

AT&T then decide to hand part of what you paid them to Apple in order to make sure that none of their rivals are allowed to sell the iPhone as well. It's AT&Ts choice to pay Apple the chunk of your monthly payment but it means they get the majority of the iphone purchasers on their network, so they're happy.

jai

so keen to stop unlocking?

i'm confused why everyone keeps on harping on about Apple being so keen to crack down on the unlocking of the iPhone.

they've only released a single upgrade so far that broke phones which had been unlocked, and they gave fair warning beforehand that they thought there was a risk that hacked iphones would not be compatible with the upgrade.

in addition, the 1.1.1 firmware has been hacked for over 2 weeks now and yet Apple haven't rushed out 1.1.2 to fix the tiff exploit that is required to hack the iphone in the first place which allows you to unlock it.

seems to me if they were as keen as you claim they are, they'd have rushed out a patch the day after the hackers first annouced they could crack 1.1.1

Motorola: Apple will not open the iPhone

jai

whole new pricing tier

"There are [people] who are willing to pay a lot for a phone."

But the thing is, Motorola can't just put out a Razr3 and charge 400quid for it - people are willing to pay a high price for a phone, but it has to do lots of things and it has to work easily.

i bought a SE M600i when they first came out and the software on that keeps crashing and needing to be reset. cos it was cheap i've coped with it for the last year. but i'd be livid if i'd paid 400 quid for it and it didn't work

Orange's Apple deal to bear unlocked iPhones

jai
Jobs Halo

re: I wonder how the iTunes Update...

"... will affect legally unlocked French iPhones. Will they stop functioning?"

it won't make a difference. the apple update broke the current unlocked iPhones because they had been unlocked by using a hack that exploited a hole the OS. the update plugged that hole and so broke the hack - hence bricking the phone.

but these phones will be unlocked by apple's own code, so any updates to the software after they're released in france will acount for that

however, there's nothign to say that if you buy a french orange iphone and then try to run it in the uk on vodaphone that the next apple update won't brick it also, but i think it's unlikely

The iPhone arrives, but is O2 being taken for a ride?

jai

re: n95

the point is, all the problems with n95 may be solvable by running patches or unbranding the phone or whatever. they all require some research on the web and mucking about with the phone.

the iPhone, like all things Apple, just works

no need for any mucking about to make it do what it is supposed to do

you might think that means its only suitable for non-techy types who don't know how to tinker with their phones

personally, i'd rather spend that time tinkering with the phone to make it do more interesting things, functions that it wasn't meant to do, not wasting the time fixing the bugs that the manufacturor couldn't be bother to fix

jai

re: so...

that's all very well, if you want a chunky brick of an n95 that's gonna weigh down your pockets

i'll be getting an iPhone cos my current phone, SE M600i, is rubbish and keeps on freezing whenever i try and do anything more than send a txt message and totally fails to function if the battery level gets below 20%

that said, i'm probably not very indicative of the average iPhone customer because i'll be getting a iPod Touch at the end of the month anyway and probably end up carrying both around with me.

DLO HomeDock Music Remote wireless iPod dock

re: title

i'm not sure where Dave got the idea that the author of the article was comparing an iPod to HiFi quality sound.

the only time hi-fi is mentioned is on the first page where it is clear that it is referring to your home audio entertainment system (be that a surround sound system, a compact "mini hi-fi", or some kind of insanely expensive seperate component system which these days is only used but the sort of sad audiophile freak who gets their rocks off pretending that they can actually hear and appreciate sounds outside of the hearing range of most normal people.

HiFi used to mean High Fidelity and was a classification of the quality of sound. These days it's just slang for whatever kit you use to make noise come out the speakers

you refer to the BeoLink 5000 i think. which did indeed have a transparent lcd display at the top of the remote control to tell you what av source you had selected and the channel etc that was playing. however it wasn't touch sensitive. it did have buttons on front and back, but they were normal buttons on the main part of the controller, not used via the lcd display

Warner Bros to remake Enter the Dragon

jai

bloody sacrilidge!!!

i can't beleive they have to front to try and remake such an iconic and classic movie as this. it's going to get slated, no matter how good it might be, because it won't be as good as everyone thinks they remember the original being. were no lessons learnt from the Itallian Job and Precinct 13 and all the others. modern film techniques and special effects are no match for the nostalgia that people feel for these classics.

Jason Bourne disses James Bond

jai

motion sickness

can we not have Eva Green AND Julia Stiles? together with Angelina and Kate as a quartet of pvc-clad goth vampiresses from the Dr Who discussion?

anyway, Bond is terrific entertainment. you don't need to think too much and get emotionally involved with the dilema and consence of the character - just sit back and watch the big set explosions and the funky gadgets

Bourne maybe a more realistic trained psychopathic killer, but not so entertaining. and thankfully it seems Bond films have the budget to afford a steadycam for the cameramen so that the audience isn't afflicted with motion sickness during the action pieces. honestly, at times it's hard to see any action on the screen in the Bourne films because the camera is jerking around so much

NASA inks deal for Shuttle replacements

jai

space elevators

space elevators are the answer. no need for gob loads of fuel being spent in getting to low orbit and discarding loads of rocket boosters. just a nice steady (kinda slow) ride to the outer atmosphere. okay, so it's probably technically a little difficult to get one to work, but it's a one-off payment for many years of continued use - it's green and affordable. instead of creating more landfill sites, we could ship all our rubbish up them when they're not being used to send up people and spy satellites and stuff, and then fire the garbage into the sun.

and it'd be cool - they could build a resturant at the top or something. maybe it could stop halfway down and people could skydive or bungie the rest of the way. no reason why the space and entertainment and extreme sports industries can't work in harmony is there?
