hurrah!

one in the eye for the sceptics! yay! that'll teach them for dumping our tea in the harbour!!

this is more like the kind of news we expect on a friday, i was getting quite worried that so many articles on the Reg today were serious, i thought maybe it was really thursday.

now, where's our friday afternoon Playmobile Porn?

Nintendo Wii US sales 3x PS3, Xbox 360

re: MGS4 is out now...

the same issue with GTA4 will apply though

i think the majority of people likely to buy a console on the strength of one title are also likely to be big enough gaming fans to have bought the PS3 already over the past year. I don't think we'll see a surge in sales just for the MGS4

IE at fault

i dunno - to me it sounds like IE is at fault really

wasn't there the big problem with Outlook automatically executing files and that's why there's so many infected spam-bots in the world?

Apple's 3G iPhone to launch 11 July

jai

@Wonderkid

i'm sorry, but have you actually used an iPhone?

it took me all of 5 minutes to get used to typing on mine

(and yes, i spend all day at work typing on a "proper keyboard" a naff standard dell one)

i find now i'm far faster on the iphone than i used to be on my other phones - even than i was on my old psion organisers whose keyboards were larger and easier to use than today's slide out keyboards

re: Err... no?

and exactly how useful was Opera on the SE's? scaled nicely did it? easy to flick around the page to find the text you want? simple to fill in text on a form and submit it?

i had Opera running on my M600i and it was not "practical for plamtop use" it was small, cramped, pages were a pain to read. it was so bad it was preferable to view WAP versions of sites than to try and navigate their real site when rendered on the tiny screen

that said - surely this article is very badly timed

it should be updated now that we've seen that 3G is only a minor part of what the iPhone2 will bring to the consumer next month

Besuited cubicle monkey trashes office

monitor leads

actually, looking at our monitors here, none of the video leads are screwed in to the connectors at the back

i don't see why a quick enough grab of the monitor wouldn't cause both the video lead and the power cable to fall out the back so it'd be easy to lob it across the office

could easily be the same in that office

still, fake or not, it's impressive he manages to throw that many CRTs and all those cubicle dividers

re: Erm? We already have video...

yes i think they're refering to the video chat being available in the middle of a game

i'm not sure video chat is important while playing a game - but being able to send a text to someone to say you're online and do they want to give you a helping hand in a team deathmatch or something, that will be cool

limited gameplay?

i'm concerned about the limited amount of gameplay

space invaders, for example, you'd have had to have drunk a damn load of beer in order to have a chance of reaching the 2nd level.

and just as you reached the critical part and needed extra precision for aiming at the mothership, you'll run out of juice... as it were

and now i think about it.... how do you fly to the left _and_ fire at the same time? some kind of stream splitting mechanism is required?

actually - this is just crying out for a Ghostbusters game, isn't it?

don't cross the streams!!!

Mobiles help UK malls track shoppers' every move

jai

flashmobs

so in theory, you could really muck up their statistics by getting 500 people to turn up at a shopping centre (what we call malls on this side of the pond) and just aimlessly wander around for 3 hours without setting foot inside a single foot

OR worse, if a company is about to launch a new product, they could hire 500 people to turn up repeatedly throughout the day and just make a bee-line to the shop that's selling the product

PS3 update fails to fix Grand Theft Auto IV woes

jai

no problems here either

i think an earlier poster was right - i think there problem isn't nearly as bad as the media makes out (obviously it's very very annoying for those few experiencing it) but since the GTA patch, i think the number of people still suffering from the freezes must be very small.

certainly, i know several people with launch day 60gb ps3's and since applying the 1.1 patch, none of us have had any trouble at all

this would suggest to me that if anyone is still having the problem, either they haven't applied the patch, or their problem is different, and as very few others have it, possibly not the fault of the game but instead down to other environmental features.

Intel: future iPhone to be Atom powered

jai
Jobs Halo

iTablet

macrumors seem to be going with the idea that it'll be a 3rd type of iphone device, more like a tablet, using the current Atom chip:

http://www.macrumors.com/2008/05/14/intel-confirms-atom-based-larger-iphone-mini-tablet/

sounds like the device would be about twice the size of an iphone - if it allowed me to screen share and control my macmini that is wired up to the tv, that would be ideal for me

but then again - with the sold-out WWDC due in just a couple of weeks, i'm expecting we'll see a lot of stories all over the web trying to guess at what will be annouced

Apple to announce handheld games console at WWDC?

jai
Jobs Halo

i'd doubt it

i'm not convinced there really is such a big handheld gaming market

and what market there is, it is more than amply catered for by the DS and the PSP.

added to which, the Mac has always had a bad name for gaming - even despite evidence to the contrary - and that's an image that Apple would find hard to shake. Sony and Nintendo have a proven history of gaming so buying a portable device from them is a safe bet. they can populate the platform with well known titles from their consoles. Apple haven't got a well known back catalog of Mac games that would transition to a handheld device.

(although, i'd sell my eyeteeh to be able to play the Marathon games on my iPhone on the way to work each morning)

one thing that does lend itself towards this theory though - how come there are STILL no games for the iPhone or the iPod Touch? could it be that developers have held off from releasing big screen versions of their iPod games because they know something is around the corner?

GTA IV PS3 fights off resolution woes in the UK

jai
Flame

can't really tell the difference

i've been playing the ps3 version since last saturday and it looks fine to me

to be honest, yes, i could see that perhaps it's displaying in 1080i or similar - but it still looks kickass great

as Joe K says - when you're actually playing the game, you're not going to know the difference. besides - i'd rather play it in slightly lower res on the PS3 without the game hanging and freezing as it's doing on the 360 version

ps. a Reg article that mentions Sony and Microsoft together - let the flame wars begin!!!

Rumour-mill rumbles on Apple, Immersion vibro iPhone pact claim

jai

how would it work

the iPhone already makes a click sound when you type a key anyway

and to be honest, i find i type faster without the sound on, because when it is there, i tend to wait a fraction of a second for the click before pressing the next key. when it's silent, i just type without any pauses.

is this suggesting that the phone will rumble each time i type a key? will there be a different rumble for each key? otherwise, what is the difference between a vibration and a key click sound?

or is it... that when you're holding your finger down on the screen and dragging it across the keyboard to get to another key - will it rumble so you can count yourself moving from key to key?

i can see how that would work - and on the odd occasion when i'm txting and driving and trying not to get arrested by the cops, it would even be slightly useful - but really, how often is anyone going to need it?

@Mark

and don't forget yourself that the 360 has been on sale for 18 months longer than the PS3

7 millions units is not that great a lead to have, given the headstart the 360 had.

i don't think the ps3 will have any trouble at all selling 7 million units over the next 18 months.

jai

re: Shop floor space

it's probably the cost. Wii games are at least a tenner cheaper than PS3/360 games aren't they? I assume that the shops are taking a percentage of the cost, rather than a flat fee per game, so they're keen to push the more expensive ones perhaps

iplayer on the xmb

I'm also with Sony on this one - i'd like to see the iPlayer as an option in the XMB, not to be accessed via the browser.

I've got a keyboard and mouse hooked up to the ps3, but it'd be much faster and easier if the iPlayer was an app on the xmb.
