AMD says Xbox 720 graphics to be good as Avatar

jai

this is going to get me to buy one

Avatar was visually stunning, yes. But without any kind of interesting plot to inspire me to watch it a 2nd time or buy it on dvd.

If the 720 is getting compared to Avatar, then i'll wait for the PS4 with hopefully more substantial and stimulating gameplay rather than pure visual gimmickery

70% of the increase will go to the developers.

Apple are still only taking their 30% of the price, whatever the price is.

Marathon for iPad

jai

awesomesauce

I've been looking forward to getting Marathon, but was worried that it wouldn't fair well being translated to the iPad and would seem unplayably outdated by today's standards.

Glad to hear that's not the case, so shall be giving this a go tonight.

As good as it was at the time, half the Marathon experience was the story and humour. And that's something that I don't think any FPS has ever managed to replicate. Even Halo is disappointing in this regard by comparison.

Sony to can MiniDisc Walkman

jai

RIP a sad day

Admittedly, i stopped using my Minidisc players many years ago when i got a 2nd gen ipod, but before then I'd had about 4 sony minidisc players and they were brilliant.

I agree that in this age of mp3, it's as archaic as cassette tape, but I do get a touch nostalgic everytime i see my old minidisc players gathering dust

Coder cracks iPad 2 jailbreak block

jai

why bother?

with iOS5 just around the corner, with arguably sufficient improvements to warrant upgrading to, then should you find there are any unofficial apps that you use, you'll be getting rid of them again in a couple of months.

besides, I've still yet to see any real must-have app that would really necessitate jailbreaking

Sony quietly tests PlayStation Network revamp

jai

screenshot "All change? PSN as it appears today"

That screenshot is not representative of how the PSN appears today. How it appeared 2 years ago, maybe, when items like Warhawk and Pain were likely to be on the front screen.

Admittedly, it's not _much_ different, but couldn't you have gotten a recent image?

also - it's not exacly text heavy - there's a list of menus down the side with words on them. the rest of the searching for games is via a grid of icons. i'd suggest those saying they prefer the xbox graphical interfaces are too illiterate to read the menu names

i don't see how it warrants a 90% rating.

If i spent 4.5 grand, i'd be seriously annoyed to get such a rubbish EPG and i'd be furious to discover that the glasses aren't good enough to watch a movie from start to finish without discomfort

but then, i guess maybe if you have the cash to blow 4.5k on a telly, maybe you have the cash to afford the plastic surgery to make for face fit the glasses

Star Wars fans want Sony sued over game shutdown

jai

crazy

I can understand to a point that if you've invested so much time into a game, it's a bit disappointing when it shuts down. but surely the new one looks so much better that you'd be itching to play that instead and so wouldn't be playing to ages old game anyway.

jai

still got mine!!

not using it though, it's an ornament that the missus wants me to get rid of. but it's staying, along with my MacPlus and angle poise G4 imac.

i swapped out the processor on my Cube with an OWC replacement. brought the performance right up to date at the time. shame, in a way, that they switched to Intel and there wasn't an way to make the Cube an Intel machine

the price was ridiculous, but then again, there was nothing else like it at the time.

and it definately wasn't style over substance. it was style AND substance.

Spam volumes show massive drop - but why?

jai

not seen any drop here either

i've had a massive increase in incoming spam over the last couple of weeks.

but i'm guessing that is because of the LulSec business, it's the same address i used for my playstation account so i'm assuming it's a result of that.

Apple strangleholds worldwide battery output

jai

you've not used one then?

I thought similar, a laptop is a laptop.

But I've had my MBA for the last 6 months and it makes a big difference being able to hold it in one hand and type with the other, when trying to work on the train squeezed on either side by two salad-dodgers.

And even at home, being able to work while sitting on the sofa and not loose the circulation in my legs, or getting up and carrying it outside holding it between finger and thumb in one hand, still open and running, while carrying a cuppa tea in the other.

Being thinner means being lighter, and being lighter just makes life a little bit easier and more enjoyable.

plus, it looks awesome :-)

DRM-free music dream haunts Apple's app-store lock-in

jai

why is this different to anything else?

so by this argument, the TLC pack I have for my Mini (pays for the first 3 mandatory services) locks me into the BMW Mini brand because, if I sell the Mini and buy a Ford, I can't get the unused free services for the new car.

It's the way the capitalist world works, and all the "open" evangalism that is currently going around isn't going to change that any time soon.

Apple closes book on iPhone-look jotter

jai

14th September 2010?

So... they have a 10 months backlog on their orders?? Sounds like a cease and desist from Apple is the least of their troubles and provides them with a get out of jail free card as they can point the blame finger and Apple instead of at their own inability to deliver the product.

RIM cuts PlayBook sales forecast, report says

jai

but who wants to do the bridge?

who really is going to want to have to use two devices at once? you'll just do your email on the blackberry. an so, why bother getting a playbook? why not get another tablet instead. or a netbook? having a native email solution on the playbook makes it a worthwhile device. without it, it's just something else to carry around from meeting to meeting

So instead of paying £128 for my OS X upgrade (because this is a full release, not the mostly transparent upgrade that Snow Leopard was), I'm going to be paying about 20 quid.

I'm sorry, but for a hundred quid, I can't quite feel sorry for the retailers.

Has Steve Jobs killed the consumer hard disk industry?

The iCloud isn't going to take all of our data from our laptops and desktop machines and thus remove the need for hard disks.

At best, it's going to facilitate easy movement of data from the hard disks attached to my iMac, across to the disk in my MacBook and the flash drives in my iPad and iPhone.

Apple aren't providing me we 4TB of space to hold all my music, apps, books, pictures, movies and tv shows. But for holding onto those media files for long term (only 1000 photos are only held online for 30 days, other data files aren't catered for), I'm going to have to do it outside of the cloud, and for that I'll still need external hard drives.

Sony unveils PlayStation telly

jai

multiplayer games?

I remember back in the day, we used to have loads of friends round, crowded around the original playstation, playing 4 player games (or even up to 8 player Micromachines by sharing the controllers between 2). good times had by all!

this "advancement" in techology is only going to let 2 people play the game at once. and anyone else in the room isn't going to be able to see a thing that's isn't at best horrible blurred, and at worst a composite of two entirely different scenes overlaid on each other.

it's a step back in multiplayer enjoyment, because half the enjoyment is for those in the room not currently playing, but waiting for their turn to do better.

but then, it's a moot point isn't it? there's feck all decent multiplayer games out at the moment that allow 2 or more players on a single machine. they're all geared at multiplayer over the internet

jai

one PS3 will be powerful enough

the PS3 can already push 3D movies to a telly, so no reason why it can't handle the double frames of this process.
