"later this month"
so.... that would be next week then?
(seeing as the non-public beta had a release last Friday, it's unlikely to be another release so soon this week).

I'm confused. El Reg has spent the last 2 years telling us that 2012 was PEAK Apple and it's all doom and gloom for the company since.
But they've totally failed to tell us that the stock price has been on the rise again recently. I suspect El Reg was delibrately spreading the PEAK Apple sub-headline in order to drive down the price so they could buy up cheap stock. And now they have a big pile of stock, they're telling us the price is on the rise in the hope we also buy more and push the price higher.
Skullduggery and duplicity are afoot!
"The Sun is a great clock, if you have clues. When it's dark, SLEEP"
it's not really a great clock, is it? a clock should be consistent.
the sun rose at 5am this morning. it will set at 21:12 tonight - although it's not actually "dark" until well past 10pm.
but in January, the sun doesn't rise until 8am and it sets at 16:19. Your so-called "Sun" clock either requires that we all are allowed to work felxible hours during the year, or that our bosses don't mind if we fall asleep at our desks on winter afternoons (at least, without having to hide it)
and steals said mined products from the US private space
well, that's just plain stealing. doesn't matter if you're on the ground or in space, whether you're american or more sophisticated. you'd have to intercept, board, probably overcome-if-not-kill the crew, make off with the booty. we'll be bringing back the old piracy laws and setting up a Eastern Galaxy Trading Company to patrol the murky depths of the starry skies. Pirates of the Capricon Cluster......
So, when Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch was sniping in 2008's Shooter, as far as I can tell from Google (am working this Saturday, so can't take the time to re-watch the movie to double check before i post), they were only talking about distances around 1800m.
So was the movie that being uncharacteristically modest (for Hollywood) in it's claims? Or was 1800 at the higher end of the records back then, but in the last 6 years the distances have increased?
I may be wrong
yes, i think you are. the way i understood the patent was that (if enabled) the phone wouldn't require you to unlock the screen via pin or fingerprint sensor if it knows that you are at home. in your home, for most people, it's unlikely that you're phone has been stolen, so the security measures are a pain in the neck.
also, i would expect this feature, if it ever appears, is a user option. so if you don't trust the people you live with, you don't have to enable it.
In the worlds before The Doctor, primal chaos reigned.
The Timelords sought order.
But a Tardis can fly only with its Eye of Harmony.
The Timelords and Daleks fought again and yet again,
As endless aeons wheeled and passed.
Time and the pure essences of Gallifrey,
the moisture of the Earth,
the powers of the sun and the moon,
All worked upon a certain policebox, old as creation.
And it became transparent and vanished.
That policebox was named "The Tardis".
Timothy Dalton, the Timelord Rassilon, said,
"In the final days of Earth, everyone had bad dreams."
A wave of the sonic, caused the doors to open.
From it then came The Doctor.
The nature of The Doctor was irrepressible!
I'm sure i saw an episode of Columbo or Diagnosis Murder or some other daytime 80s police proceedural where the wrong'un of the episode did exactly that with a camera to photograph the security keypad on a door so they could break in a kill the victim.
Just because it's new technology, does not mean it is a new threat.
did someone cut your iPhone 4 in half or something?
that size is only 50% bigger than the iPod Nano (6th gen) that worked very well on a watch strap. if there's any truth in this rumour then i suspect we'll see a rectangular screen, so the screen will be aboutsize as the 7th gen ipod nano. if so, then it's going to curve around your wrist i guess.
well, that already happened with iPhones. but turns out, the miscreants weren't actually killing people's phones - they'd just phished their account ids and passwords and then activated the kill switch. which many were able to by-pass by a simple phone reset.
So as long as Microsoft and Google implement it in a secure manner, it should remain sufficiently difficult for your miscreants to do it.
+1 for Sophos. Have it on all of mine - seems to run nice and quitely in the background, routinely picks up malware in email attachements and zaps them, never hear from it the rest of the time. and it's free, but uses the same virus definitions as the paid-for windows software does
you might want to look again, from a slide in yesterday's presentation:
- First 5GB free
- 20GB for $0.99 per month
- 200GB for $3.99 per month
- Tiers available up to 1TB
so the 200GB tier works out at half the price of the OneDrive's current plan ($100 per year).
If you're a multiplatform user, you're not their target demographic. Also, you're post on El Reg, whom Apple ignore, so they're blissfully unaware of your objection.
For those of us who drink heartily from the Kool Aid and only use iStuff, this is a great update. I just wish the dev site was up so I could download the betas already.
More interesting is the No Comment one at the same time, but in the big room that the keynote was in. Surely that's for further details on something that will only be revealed during the Keynote itself.
Or perhaps it's Tim Cook, blatantly wearing the unannounced iWatch, standing in front of a 100" TV with an Apple logo on the case, wearing a pair of Ray-bans that you can just make out the inverted image of an iOS screen displayed on the inside of the lenses, but just spending an hour replying "No comment" to every question...
Apple may have a few years before the need a big new thing, but the tech news websites can't wait that long! If they don't have some clickbait Apple-related headlines to publish, they might loose out on advertising revenue to the entertainment websites revealing what f**ktapes-star "celebrity" has had to eat this week.
You speak like he makes all these film single handedly. Yes, he's directing it, what we'll see on the screen comes from his vision, but there's a HUGE number of studio executives that'll be reviewing everything he does. He hasn't got carte blanche to do what he likes here, like he probably had with the tv shows.
Not saying it won't be a train wreck, but i think there are a lot of people other than Abrams who are going to have a hand in what we get to see. If it's rubbish, they all need to be blamed. And if we're pleasantly surprised that it's enjoyable, then they all need to be congratulated.
that pesky @ and "
it's funny - i have exactly the same problem when i'm here at work using a PC keyboard.
it makes NO sense having the single quote and the double quote keys on completely opposite sides of the keyboard.
you'll notice the colon and semi-colon are on the same key. so why not quote and double-quote?!?!?
Which was ever moving away from using an Apple device
FIFY
if she hadn't switched phones, none of this would have been a problem, and all of you lot wouldn't have had such high blood pressure over the last day while reading this article and comments :)
they're places referenced in Dante's Inferno. i was subtly implying that it'll be a cold day in hell before Apple create an iMessage app for Android.
Although, as I discovered and 's water music pointed out - when you get to the very heart of hell, it's actually already a frozen mass of ice.
Maybe that means Dante was predicting that there will be an iMessage app on 'droid after all....
yeah - admittedly i was skimming wikipedia, and it only really mentions that the 9th circle is where it gets really cold. i couldn't see if the 8th circle was much more than temperate.
seems strange. it seems that as long as you're not traitorous (and therefore end up in the 9th circle) then if you're on the road to hell already, it's probably best to go as bad as you can, at least then you'll get tollerable weather conditions while you're there. the mildly evil get burnt. Judas gets frozen. but those in between get a nice warm summers day.
if she hasn't told them that she's changed to a phone that is incompatible with iMessage (i.e. deregistered her number from iMessage) then how are Apple to know?
that's like complaining that your utilities bills are still being direct debit'ed from an old bank account, causing it to go into overdraft, because you didn't inform them to switch to your new account.
Could be that, now that she's left the church, none of her apple-wielding friends want to send txts to her :)
But seriously - claiming $5m seems a bit excessive? If she's expecting to recieve messages that are worth that much money to her, shouldn't she be relying on a different method of communication than txting?
And also, $5m for not researching how to switch phone beforehand - it's a lot of money to claim for what is essentially user error.
once you take away fan appeal
but that would make many sequels merely average. Empire and Jedi would be just average sci-fi without the fan appeal of building on what the first film did.
Godfather 2 might be able to stand on its own.
And Aliens also would work by itself. although, it's still appealing to sci-fi fans, so if you removed that....
i watched Episodes 1 to 3 almost back to back a couple of weeks ago, and was suprised to find that Jar Jar and Anakin being annoying weren't half as much as i remembered them being from the first time i saw it.
Yes, they're still annoying, but i think on watching it additional times, you're able to blank them out and focus on the rest of the films. The huge space battle at the start of Ep 3, for example, is fantastic (blanking out the weird missiles that turn into droids with laser cutters...)
Anyway - i liked what he did with Star Trek, am optimistic that the new movies will be more Empire than Phantom Menace
+1 that the app can't sync what's been listened to and what hasn't.
But despite that, i like the Podcast interface and it makes it much easier to organise your podcast subscriptions.
I've abandoned the podcast maangement within iTunes on the desktop. I just use the Podcast app on the phone to manage the subscriptions and it works verywell, downloading the newest shows when they become available, or for those with a large back catalogue, keeping three (or a number of your choice) of un-listened-to episodes on the phone whenever I have wifi connection.
So yes, the integration between the two isn't great. But I'm glad they did create a seperate app as now i no longer have to ensure i sync with iTunes before i go to work each morning as the phone's already updated it content before i wake up.
Philips are tragically late too. Surely it would have been far better a couple of years ago, in the height of Wii-mania, when Nintendo would have been happy to pay a large settlement. Now, is it even worth the cost of the lawyers to settle and avoid the impact to what few Wii U's they might sell?
a better solution is just to wait for someone else to do all that, AND record the two hidden tracks, and upload the .ogg files to usenet or something, then download and play on your digital device
although, i doubt i'll bother. if Mr White is so concerned with retro, he won't be wanting any of my modern money and i'm all out of shillings and pence.
The Bloomberg report - and the rest of the internet - places far more emphasis on the music streaming side of Beats' business
To be fair, so too did the original report on April Fools day:
http://lefsetz.com/wordpress/index.php/archives/2014/04/01/apple-buys-beats/
Have any of the other sites to report on this confirmed that they've done further research to see if there is anything more to this story than an April Fools joke?
The most pointless and useless of the current versions of social networking.
This is the mistake that everyone has made (especially all those who bought the shares).
Twitter isn't really a social network. That's just a small part of it. It's really a media platform. The real value is not in letting you (the average Joe on the street) tell your friends what you're currently doing in under 140 characters. That is what Facebook is for.
The value in Twitter is to the celebrities. It's a simple way for them to broadcast messages to their fans, who are all following them, without having to pay attention to what any of those fans are doing, or asking back. And when they have something to sell, it's perfect direct marketing to the precise audience who are going to be buying it.
I actively use Twitter, reading tweets of people i'm interested in or sites who's news i want to follow. I don't tweet anything myself and only a couple of the people that i follow do i actually know in real life. and none of them really tweet anything either.
I think there is a real market for Twitter, if used for this kind of thing. and as such, it works well the way that the BBC and even El Reg make use of it. it's almost the inverse of Facebook. But unfortunatley it has been labelled a social network, so everyone assumes it's identical to Facebook.
Days of Future Past? But why is it so bad? the plot for the film comes from the story arc in the comics that had that same title. so the title for the film seems rather apt, telling you exactly which plotline from the comic it is adapting to the film.
and considering the plot is all about the people in the future going back into the past to fix the errors made there and so save everyone from persecution in the future, it's not too bad. it's much along the lines of Back to the Future, as a grammatically convoluted title goes.
