Cops target climate-sceptic bloggers in three countries

jai

a bit slow?

So, those likely to be targeted by the police, were told a week ago, and so had plenty of time to move and erase any suspicious files and run a 72 times zeros to the empty space on their drives before the rozzers turn up and half-inched their hardware.

awesomesauce

recently played GTA3 again when it came out on OS X a couple of months ago. was a massive slice of nostalgia. and quite surprising how much fun the game still is. graphics, obviously, looked very dated, but will be interesting to see how they fair on the mobile screens, probably look quite reasonable.

there's no finer way to pass the time than driving around Liberty City, working for the mob, listening to Lazlo on the radio offending just about everyone.

Apple's founding contracts sold for $1.59 MILLION

jai

bad luck

so not only did he sell out of the company early and so give up what would now be 2 billion dollars, he also sold the documents in '94 and so missed out on making 1.5 million if he'd sold them today.

that guy has had a really long run of bad fortune. dude is either due a lottery win, or did something so terrible that karma has spent all his life screwing with him.

Apple TV tops connected set-top box chart

jai

Not sure about consoles.

Very few people buy a ps3 just to be able to stream media from their pc or the internet to their telly. Whereas for AppleTV and Roku and the rest, that's their primary function.

Also, the types of people (like me) who would buy an AppleTV, are also going to have at least one console connected to the telly as well. And I use both for streaming video media (AppleTV streams iTunes content, PS3 streams avi's and divx's).

So including consoles would complicate the results terribly because you'd have to account for those that bought and use multiple devices. Whereas I doubt anyone uses both a Roku and an AppleTV.

Acer CEO: No more 'cheap and unprofitable' products

jai

crossed lines?

So, if Gartner reckon that ultrabooks are over priced and the prices must be reduced, how are Acer going to return to profit? They will again be chasing a market were the profit margins get smaller and smaller. Won't they just be in the same position in two years time, but instead of stacks on unshiftable notebooks, the piles will be a bit smaller because they'll be stacks of unshiftable skinny ultrabooks?

UK.gov to require you to opt out of data-sharing plan with drug firms

jai

The danger will be in opting out

If you opt out, then the govt/nhs have to keep your records in a separate, secure confidential database, away from the more readily available one.

So you're guaranteed that someone will leave a copy of your health records unlocked on a laptop or usb drive on a train or in a taxi every 4 months. Whereas, by staying opted in, your data should be safer by obscurity, as it'll be lost amongst all the rest of the populations data which will be held in a privately run database with the correct levels of access controls and redundant backup systems.

Possibly, they've spent the last 5 years consistently "loosing" people's private health data in order to convince us that being auto-opted-in really is the better and safer choice.

Greatest ever first-person shooter* brought back to life

jai

the test of time

The game was incredibly good fun, back in the day. and the way the story was handed out to you piece by piece created the atmosphere and made it so enjoyable.

i tried Aleph One a few years ago, and it was okay.

Shall be interesting to give it another try now that it's reached a full version number, to see how it compares in these current days of gaming.

Does your smartphone run Carrier IQ? Find out here

iDevices

no, it means what apple said, that if your iDevice has iOS4 or earlier still, then you might have CarrierIQ running on there.

but as has been pointed out elsewhere, the resources that CarrierIQ is able to snoop on under iOS are much less than those it can report back when running on Android.

Hands on with Star Wars: The Old Republic

jai

very looking forward to it

I know people claim it's much like WoW and very cookie-cutter, but, it is an MMO. There's only so much you can do with that genre. The alternative would be something totally different like Eve Online, but that wouldn't appeal to as many people.

I've heard that the devs have made a concious effort to ensure the game is story driven, so not so many random pointless quests purely for the sake of leveling up. Also, no grinding mobs for the sake of levelling too. All of which appeals to me.

And to be honest, the core demographic for this game will be Star Wars nuts, so it makes sense for the story to drive the game.

I wasn't expecting to enjoy it so much, MMO's aren't really my thing, but I'm quite a fan of Star Wars, so I played it to check it out. And I really enjoyed it. Found myself logging back in for another hour or two again and again. And when I wasn't logged it, I found myself thinking about it, wondering what it'd be like when I got to the higher levels, what it'd be like to play the other classes. Whereas, with WoW, I only played the other classes out of boredom, not because I was genuinely interested in how they differed.

Can't wait for Dec 20th.

and if he's desperate for a crap, he barks and pounces on my genitals, since he's worked out that's guaranteed to get me off the sofa regardless of what is on telly

The BBC Micro turns 30

jai

A final BBC Micro, the A3000, was launched in May 1989. It was the last of the line.

"turns 30"

Are there any still in active use anywhere? A better title would "BBC Micro would turn 30 if it hadn't died 15 years ago"

Never was a big fan. Not sure if that's because we used them at school, so associated it with school work, or just because I'd been using an Apple][ since I was knee-high to a snail, and two years before I got a BBC Micro to help with school projects, my dad had brought home an Apple Mac to work on, so the idea of the command line interface seemed prehistoric to me.

it's guarenteed to be the best multiplayer fun you've ever had.

it's by the team who did Micro Machines V4 for the psOne and the incredible Mashed games for the PS2. This is basically Mashed, but with flashier graphics and physics. It's going to be awesome!!

WinPho sceptics cut Lumia 800 sales estimates in half

jai

very nice

Colleague at the office has one of these, and very nice it is too. Feels well build, and the rounded edges spark nostalgia for the way the original iPhon felt in the hand, or an old iPod nano.

Interface seemed very nice and fast, although I wondered how it would work if you have it loaded with a lot of apps. Would it still seem so easy. But then, that's not a problem until there actually are a lot of WinPho apps that are worth having, i guess.

Overall, I liked it, and if it wasn't built by Nokia, and running M$ software, and I didn't already have an iPhone, then I'd likely consider it at length, before choosing an Android or iOS phone instead.

Supercomputer Watson too thick to use Siri

jai

incompatible

"It's not just the different ways they take input that makes the two incompatible."

Is it not rather the very fact that both take (even require) input, that makes them incompatible?

Both are designed to be given some data, and then do something with it.

For a system to be compatible with Siri or Watson, it would have to be capable of coming up with a question that it wanted an answer to, without any prompting, and to be able to do something with the response, other than interpret it as a question.

Apple's cloud music service 'WIPES your iPHONE'

jai

The theory goes, if someone thinks you've illegally downloaded a music track, they'll have a record of your ip address connecting to whatever server you got the file from.

So regardless of whether you have the file on your machine or not, and regardless if you've since replaced it with a legitimate version from iCloud, or bought the CD and ripped it, they'll still sue you based on the record of the illegal download.

jai

It merits 5 thumbs down (at the time of writing) because the OP hasn't bothered to even see if that's how the system works, which it isn't.

If you loose your signal, the music files are still on your iPhone. Just as they're still on your desktop machine. And they're still in the iCloud.

But if you add a music track to your desktop machine, it'll be copied up to the iCloud and then immediately pushed down to your iPhone (if you wish)

They've never said it was an online streaming service.

jai

tags aren't used

They don't use the id tags to match the tracks, that'd be a bit daft for the very reason you point out.

From http://appculture.net/how-does-itunes-match-work/

"When iTunes on your computer looks at your songs, it takes an audio snapshot of each one so that it can compare them directly against the iTunes Store database. This way, even if you’ve mislabeled Brian Eno as The Beatles (“wow, their later work really pushed the envelope!”), iTunes will get you the right match.

The same goes for live concerts vs studio recordings: if it’s on the iTunes Store, it’ll figure it out. (A lot of people had trouble with this part initially, but as of now, it’s pretty flawless at picking the right version.)"

Leaked blower sports RIM's prospective OS, BBX

the London looks damn nice

but why are they going to take so long to bring it to market? if they release it now, they'll snap up a lot of people that were disappointed by the iPhone4S and who will otherwise get Galaxy S IIs.

Lego movie greenlighted by Warner Bros

jai

oh dear god no!!!

As a purely Lego movie, in the style of the computer games, and those fantastic short movies that were around the web a few years ago, it'd be brilliant.

But mixing in live action? It's going to be horrific. It'll be like a Power Rangers movie or worst yet, the horrific car crash that was the Garbage Pail Kids movie :(

Roger Rabbit definitely made it work, but everything else.... wait, doesn't Avatar count as a mix of animated and live action? Then again, Roger Rabbit was still better than that, so your original point still stands.

UN set to dump GMT for tech-friendly Atomic Time

jai

no, feck off!

If a leap second occurring on a regular basis causes problems, then a leap minutes every century, when people will have forgotten the last time it occurred and it catches everyone by surprise, is going to cause chaos.

If you want lighter evenings, move further south, or to europe. I've very much enjoyed waking up an hour later this week than I did last week and wish we could move the clocks backwards in the Spring too, but we can't that's would be madness. It's going to get dark in the evenings eventually in the winter anyway, no mater what time zone we're using. If we stick with BST year round, then people will start wanting a BST++ in the summer, and a BST+ in the winter and before long, we're on the same timezone as Japan. Deal with it, we live in this part of the world, this is how the daylight hours work. Feck off elsewhere if it bugs you that much.
