RIM shot at Android: Free PlayBooks for devs

jai

emulator with SDK?

I assume the Android SDK come with some kind of emulator app?

I've messed around with the Appcelerator Titanium IDE, writing iOS apps in javascript. And from what i could gather, that would convert or wrap your code and then hand it off to either the iOS or Android SDK to compile and deploy into a emulator app running on your pc that'd show you how the app would run on a mobile. At least, that's how the iOS side worked, I assume it's the same process with the Android SDK.

Apple iPhone 5 to debut at developer gig

jai

don't see it happening

I'd like it to. My 24-month contract from when i got the iPhone4 will expire in June, so I'd be keen on upgrading to the iPhone 5 at an O2 assisted discount (rather than the full price I paid for the iPhone4)

But I don't see it myself.

They've no need to rush it out. They'll hold out until it's about a year since the 4S launch and then announce the 5. By that time the anticipation and the hype will be unbearable and we'll all be dying to queue around the block outside the Apple stores again

removal of up/down vote confirmation pages

when we click the thumb up/down vote buttons on a post, would it be possible to acknowledge the click right there within the thread, without taking us to another page, from which we then have to click to return from? At the least, have the confirmation page on a 3 second timer that'll automatically return us to the post we voted one.

But better, as the vote seem to take effect instantly now anyway, can't we just visually see the number increment when we click on it, so we know our vote has been counted?

40,000 Apple fanbois demand ethical iPhone 5

jai

how many of those 40,000 are really so concerned that they'll _not_ buy the iPhone5 if it isn't shown to be more ethical?

i doubt very many. it's all very well to sign a petition demanding these things, but are they also willing to vote with their wallets?

Boffin's blog blast births boycott of publisher Elsevier

jai

and the difference?

So if they publish via iBooks Author, then Apple owns the copyright, but they at least get 70% of the proceeds from their own work. Whereas at the moment, they publish via Elsevier and they get no money, and Elsevier owns the copyright?

Seems the iBooks Author option is at least a bit more beneficial to the authors of the works. A small step in the right direction at least.

Dumb salesmen are hurting us – Nokia CEO

jai

i've seen one!

Someone in the office has one, it's the only one I've seen. And I work in the IT dept, so you'd think there'd be a higher percentage of people in this dept that would be willing to try out the new platform. And from the quick glance i got of it, and brief demo, it did look quite interesting.

However, he's getting annoyed by it. Too few apps and some really annoying UI decisions that mean you have to take several actions when the intuitive step would be one. But that's a windows UI problem, not a Nokia one.

Playstation Vita games match PS3 software prices

jai

mobile phone games <> mobile console games...

...admittedly, so claiming that a iOS game is 1/10th the price of a Vita game isn't a fair comparison

However, equally, a mobile console game <> a ps3 game. I seriously doubt there is the longevity in the gameplay, you're not going to be getting a game the size of a Final Fantasy or a GTA4 released on the Vita. So who is going to pay 45 quid for a Vita game when the same money will get you a more fully featured game in the same franchise on the PS3?

re: It is unlikely to the point of absurdity

You, sir, have no sense of wonder or imagination at what the future could hold. Your reality must be dull and boring and I'm delighted to say I have no grasp of it whatsoever!

You stick with your mundane future, where to world of tomorrow is very much as it is today, and I shall stick with mine where I'm downloading and printing my own rocketboots and hover-boards and riding the space elevator to the upper atmosphere at the weekend for a picnic looking at the stars.

Why can't we do that with conventional rubbish? It'd save all the worry about landfill sites and so on.

All we need is a working space elevator to carry the garbage up without the need for massive energy expenditure, and then we fire it off towards the sun, which surely requires little effort as gravity will do most of the work, or, for special occasions like New Years and Guy Fawlkes Night, the garbage could be fired towards earth's atmosphere to create a spectacular lightshow across the whole country to complement the fireworks displays.

Peter 47 whined: "which _should_ also entitles you to sharing in the profits"

should? according to whom? according to just you. certainly, not according to any part of the financial markets, their regulators or the legal system. and i think they probably ought to know more about the subject than you do.

buying a share is a gamble. just because you bet on red doesn't mean the ball on the roulette wheel should land on a red number. you just hope it will.

you buy a share and you hope to take part in the companies success. you're not entitled to anything. if the share price tanks, are you going to put your hand into your pocket and help the company out, share in the losses? no, you're going to whine about the crappy investment (which was your choice).

the only thing buying a share entitles you to is that, if you sell it in the future, you'll get the market price for it, which may or may not be above what you paid for it.

iPad users 'risk shoulder pain', say US gov, Microsoft boffins

jai

no, but you read a book in exactly the same back/neck/shoulder position as you do when you use a tablet. Or rather, the otherway round, we use tablets like that, because that's what we've become accustomed to be comfortable from years of reading books (which in many cases of hardback editions, are bigger, bulkier and heavier than a tablet, and so more dangerous).

Use iBooks Author, only Apple can ever publish the result

jai

sounds worse than it is in practise?

as i understand it, the iBooks2 format is ePub3, with extensions to ensure all the whizzy embedded content and stuff work well. And no one else supports that yet, so if i make a book in iBooks Author, then the only platform anyone can read it on is going to be iBooks. And so i makes sense to sell via iBookstore, because that's where the majority of your audience is going to be shopping.

And also, the app is called iBooks Author, the clue is in the name. It's not iBooks&Kindle Author is it?

And as everyone has said, this restriction is only to the iBooks2 format file that gets generated. Nothing to stop you producing another copy of your file with a different tool that is purely epub3 compatible and missing the iBooks2 specialsauce.

speculation

The article suggests that Apple are going to enable anyone to start published text books for the education market. I don't think that's been stated anywhere. It's pure speculation.

From what I've read, Apple are going to release the tools which will enable those currently writing education books, to produce media and interactive rich textbooks that can be read in iBooks (I guess). I don't think this is for the general public.

Work from home, find a new hobby, buy a fountain - UK.gov

jai

where do i sign up?

There's no need to convince the workforce that working from home is a good idea.

I'd happily switch jobs to one that would allow me to work from home.

If they are serious about this, they need to strongly target the employers to convince them to accept and encourage remote working. Currently, the view is that if you're working from home, then you're obviously skiving, "lying on the sofa and flicking yourself off to Trica" as the saying goes.

one time pass

I've given up trying to remember passwords. Where I can, I set a long password completely at random and make no attempt to remember it. Then, the next time I need to log in, I request a new password.

There are two flaws in this approach, but I feel the freedom from having to remember random alphanumeric words that need to be changed every 30 days is worth it.

Flaw 1: I have to wait around for the new password to be generated and emailed to me.

Flaw 2: I'd be completely unable to reveal my amazon.com password even if under torture and at risk of death.

surely the pixel count on a telly is largely irrelevant, because you're comparing a 10" screen against a telly, which is likely at least 24" in size.

so even having the same number of pixels, that's a much much higher density of pixel and so much improved image.

They really should have put this in place from the get go. Apple have their HIG document and will reject your Apple if you don't follow it closely enough. That may be a bit draconian, but it serves a purpose.

Putting out a website now with these ideas on is a bit late. It's going to be ignored by the majority of developers I expect. If it had been there at the start, developers would have gotten used to referring to it as part of their dev cycle.
