Apple Watch 'didn't work on HAIRY FANBOIS, was stripped of sensor tech'

jai

it's reported

"Apple has scrapped certain health-monitoring technologies from its upcoming Watch, it's reported"

Who is it reported by? two journalists at the WSJ

Who first broke the rumour that the Watch would be able to do all this monitoring? the same journalists at the WSJ last June.

Evidently the WSJ's approach to journalism is to make wild, unsubstantiated claims about a future product before it's been announced. And then, when the final product doesn't fullfill those claims, to then write a story about how the company had to abandon their plans.

Jupiter Ascending – a literally laughable train wreck of a film

jai

Re: Sceptical Mila is sceptical

Bound is great fun. The Matrix, of course was amazing. V for Vendetta is brilliant. And Cloud Atlas is truely epic.

M2 & 3 suffered perhaps from trying to do too much. Should have left some of their ideas for Animatrix 2 & 3 perhaps. But they're very enjoyable if you like watching the special effects in the battles and fight scenes.

So even if Jupiter Ascending is as bad as this review makes out, i'll give it the benefit of the doubt. Their track record, for me, is firmly in the positive so far.

(Would have loved to see their original version of Assassins. It's a great film as it is, but sounds like their version would have been far more interesting)

This is the stock market you're talking about. If they don't knee-jerk react to news they do not understand, then how can anyone make any money?

Sure, a lot of "average Joe" investors have seen the value of their stock wiped out, but a couple of 1% traders are going to make a lot of money off the rapid fluctuation of this stock.

"more consumers are switching to the larger phone"

No sure I agree with the conclusion "more consumers are switching to the larger phone"

Apple's new phone forced everyone buying a new iPhone to the larger screensize. If you wanted the new shiny shiny, then the only option was the larger phone size, or the small phablet size of the 6 Plus.

Personally, it's the thinness and the lightweight of the 6 that i like. If they'd released a 6 Mini with the form of the new phones, but the screen size of the original iPhone, i'd have been more than happy with that.

Toffee, Apple? U.S. fanbois get their sticky fingers on Nork-teasing flick The Interview

jai

doesn't explain why it's not available on Sony's PSN Store. Perhaps the DNS takedown was also by Nork to stop them releasing the movie themselves?

jai

really? in this day and age, is the cinema box office takings really that much of a percentage of the films income?

after all the hype and the endless free advertising that the press gave the movie, i'd be surprised if they hadn't already made back teh $44m in just the first few days of download sales.

GTA V replay value?

i'm loving going through the single player storyline all over again. all the heists offered two options, didn't they? I'm deperately trying to remember which option i chose for each the first time i played on the PS3. Hoping i'll remember when they come up, so i can choose the other one.

but even so, ever since GTA 3, there's never been a better, more relaxing way to unwind than to just jump in a car and cruise around the streets listening to the road. And with each game since, the radio has just gotten better and better.

ah Vice City, those were the days.... </nostalgia>

Re: Always online requirement? No sale.

"no good reason to mandate an internet connection"

while that is true, i can't be bothered to go to the settings and enable/disable the wifi all the time, or get up and yank the ethernet out of the back of the ps4, so whether the game mandates it or not, these days i am in fact always online.

(obviously, if your internet provider has a tiny data cap on your usage and punishingly expensive costs if you exceed it, they yes, best to avoid online games at all)

jai

Re: Social Gaming...

i've suddenly become time-poor too. i don't quite know when it happened.

but i've found GTA Online is pretty good for infrequent visits. sure, you're not going to become world famous, but it doesn't punish you for not spending your life logged in. there aren't really any aspects that require you to grind away for hours to achieve something.

and there's a lot of fun to be had in the playlist missions if you get a good mix of other players.

Apple deliberately wiped rivals' music from iPods – iTunes court claim

jai

Re: "Unexpected files"

"most of which wasn't DRMed* and could easily be ripped to an audio player, losslessly if required"

but, not legally, yes?

jai

the issue here is actually that Real Networks reverse engineered the DRM so that they could make their DRM look-like Apple's and so be accepted by iTunes and iPods. Then, when Apple plugged the holes that they used to do this, any music in Real's DRM suddenly became invalid and so removed.

The lawsuit should be against Real for creating their DRM in a nefarious way and not just selling their track DRM-free like Amazon have been doing.

Re: Sigh. @Kaltern

"doesn't revolve around a woman"

although, in fact, it does. The whole game happens because of the relationship with Michael and his wife.

(spoilers)

Michael wouldn't have gone into witsec if it hadn't been for her and the kids, and thereby not screwed over Trevor. Even if he had decided to quit at that point, she's the one screwing around with the tennis coach, that puts Michael in the position of needing to raise cash and hence go back to the life, dragging Franklin in tow. The whole plot of the game is entirely down to Amanda and her actions.

jai

Re: Sigh. @Kaltern

"Yes to a black guy, no to a female character"

Actually, in the online mode, you can create your own characters, no? and you can choose to play a female character if you want - and there you can do all the same violent things as in the single player game.

*actually, i assume there are hookers in the online version? i'm generally too busy trying to not get shot by some 12 year old who's screaming over the voice chat than to go curb crawling. but the rest of the world is populated the same as the single player version so i don't see why not.

jai

Re: A ban?

Rockstar somehow manage it with every release. this isn't even a new game - it's just re-released for the new consoles. and yet it still gets a ban and the associated press coverage.

Re: Temperature

but they do all this amazing slingshot actions with satellites to speed them up on their way off to the far reaches on the solar system...

can't they also factor in a similar way of slingshotting in a way that bleeds off speed so that eventually they end up just orbiting the earth. and can then drop in as a normal re-entry, or dock with the ISS and go home in the next supply shuttle or something.

it's going to add a lot of time to the mission i guess....

Spotlight / Alfred

The current version of Spotlight in Yosemite has the majority of the same features as you describe for Alfred. It's much advanced on where it was a year or two ago.

The leader in this class of tool I believe is Quicksilver, although i can't speak to why that is the case as Spotlight has always done all i need it to - i'm not the target demographic for these search-for-anything-anywhere utilities.

jai

Re: MSPaint equivalent?

Well, the built-in equivalent is Preview, it'll be there in your Applications folder.

It's fine for pasting in a screenshot and resizing it, or compiling a group of images and savingn as a multi-page pdf or similar.

But if you're looking to edit/change picutres, in a photoshop type way without the bulk of photoshop, then i like Pixelmator, but i don't think it's free.

There was also Acorn, which i think was either free or very cheap. It wasn't too featured, but perfectly fine for quick editing. The latest version looks to have most features you'd expect, but i'm not sure what the price is.

jai

Re: Lots of other good products....

Also for TextWrangler, i'm a bit fan of it, although a lot of people also prefer BBEdit for their text file bothering.

Sony borks fanboi funboxes with dodgy PS4 update

jai

"have become almost routine major updates"

Aside from the above quote not making sense, it seems odd to me the the PS4, Xbox One and iPhone are the only devices in the world to have had a major update / system release.

I was pretty sure there were a gazillion other items and devices out there in the world, and so three of them having issues with an update doesn't qualify for "almost routine"

/IF/ you are inclined to use NFC for payments, then you have to trust someone not to be stealing your money while you're doing it. Personally, I'd be more inclined to trust a massive company to at least be making it as secure as possible, . The alternative is that you're placing your trust in some unknown 3rd party developer who's released a payment app for free, but for some reason, it also asks you to take a photo of your card and type in your social security number...

Apple gives fanbois The Sweetest Thing: A delete button for that U2 album

jai

1st World Problems

Peter Cohen put it best:

But the inordinate amount of actual anger directed at Apple and U2 over this is so disproportional to the actual event, I’ve started to wonder about the mental state of some of those complaining. It’s really been off the charts.

If you fall into that camp, let me speak very plainly: I have no sympathy for you. I have trouble thinking of a more self-indulgent, “first world problem” than saying “I hate this free new album I’ve been given.”

Tim Cook on pale, male Apple: 'As CEO, I'm NOT satisfied'

jai

Re: Well I am not happy with Cook.

The fact of the matter is you hire people to do the job, not skin color, not gender, not gender preference.

And from the stats that Apple released, it looks like that is exactly what they have done. If Apple were looking to even the stats at any cost, they would have done so already. Instead, they've stated that they are keen to avoid bias in their hiring, but so far, hiring the right people to do the job has led to a majority of white males.

They are damned if they do and damned if they don't, but at least they are being honest and open about it.

Sonos AXES support for Apple's iOS4 and 5

jai

On May 27th...

so... you are suggesting that in the last 2 months it is possible that lots of people have gone out and got old devices that run iOS4 and iOS5?

I doubt sufficient numbers of people have started to use the old OS in such a short space of time to have any meaningful impact upon those figures.

jai

But why should they bother with the effort? There's such a tiny amount of people using the old OS's that they probably don't care.

For a specific value of "many"

It means that many older iPads, iPhones

Where by 'many' you mean 'a small number'

A quick google shows third-party analysis that iOS 7 has achieved 90% adoption. So the number of people still using an iOS less than 6 is not a huge amount.

If you're forking out the money for Sonos kit, you can afford to upgrade your iDevice at the same time

So, one analyst is claiming that other analysts don't know what they're talking about?

He's actually done some research and looked some real numbers, which is first because from what I can tell, most analysts get their data from the tea leaves at the bottom of their chai latte, or the patterns made in goats intestines and from casting animal bones.
