Numbers don't lie: Apple's ascent eviscerates Microsoft

jai

Re: What's the best statement of mock surprise?

really? Tunnocks? I'm British, I spent several years living in Scotland, i recognise the product by its picture but i'd never have known was a Tunnocks was if i hadn't clicked the link to wikipedia.

Hostess cakes, however, i know about, not least from their reference in Zombieland. So in this case, i'd say a Sno Ball trumps a Tunnocks

in either case, it's redundant. everyone calls that model of iMac to iLamp anyway, since neither of the sugary foodstuffs have a screen sticking out of them on an angle-pose neck.

Did your iPhone 'just stop working' - or did you drop it in your BEER?

jai

poor reporting

I think what Anna failed to make clear is that, even though Apple have been using this for ages (since the very first iPhone i think) the patent office has only now got around to approving their patent application for it.

Europe's prang-phone-in-every-car to cost €5m per life saved

jai

who's paying for this?

ringing up a €12.5bn bill

is the EU going to be paying for this then? or will the car manufacturers just be adding €200 to the cost of each vehicle and then keeping half of it for themselves?

Samsung asks for US Galaxy Nexus ban to be lifted pending appeal

jai

if Samsung appeal

shouldn't Samsung have to post a bail money as well then, seeing that if the trial does find that they were infringing the product, then they should have to post money equal to the revenue that Apple has lost as a result.

Not saying I agree either way with the product ban, just saying that if that's the way it works (posting money to cover the potential loss) then surely it should work both ways?

Oh wait, i forgot, lawyers and patents... there's nothing fair or logical invovled

Apple lobs pocket change to Proview, ending Chinese IPAD name row

jai

Re: Don't understand

Not sure they're gonna survive. Apparently Proview were hoping to hold out for $400 million which they need to save themselves from bankruptcy.

16 mil might be just enough to pay off their most pressing creditors, but they're not back in the black yet.

Re: new tablet battleground? really?

If they thought there was going to be a big market for it they'd have done what was necessary to make the marketplace available in the UK and EU.

But they haven't yet, which suggests they do not feel the market is there (yet?) to make it worth the effort at bringing the marketplace and the Fire to this side of the pond.

jai

new tablet battleground? really?

This article talks about the 7" market being up for grabs...

Playbook died on arrival.

Fire was a big hit initially, but as mentioned above, how big has it really been in 2012? if it was doing that well, surely they'd have brought it to the uk by now.

The Nexus 7 has only just appeared, we've no idea if it'll go the same way as the Playbook.

And the iPad Mini is pure rumourware.

I think it's a little early to be talking about a "new tablet battleground"

You need more than one involved party for a battleground.

Come back with this article in November or December - then we'll be able to see if there's a battleground over the 7" market, or if the Fire and the Nexus follow the Playbook into the long dark night...

how does that work? there's nothing in the rules that says paper has to be shown as palm up, or that rock is anything more than a clenched fist - you can have your hand horizontal (so your wrist would be the same as if showing paper with palm down) or vertical and so wrist is in same orientation as scissors.

In fact, no reason why paper has to be shown horizontally either.

Google Nexus 7 price, details confirmed in pre-I/O leak

jai

WTF? NFC?

So it's got a front camera, and no rear camera. That make sense, since who really wants to use a tablet sized device to take photographs (other than Galaxy S3 users, obviously).

But by the same measure, who's going to want to carry around a tablet and use that to pay for coffee and underground tickets? I can see NFC being a great addition to a phone, but on a tablet? really?

Samsung frees fanboys from iPhone with freeware

jai

using iTunes to manage the Galaxy?

didn't Palm try to do something much like that? Although in that case, they were making the Pre look like an iPhone to iTunes weren't they? And had to constantly release updates to keep working around Apple's own updates?

I take it this uses a different method? I can see how they can migrate the data, but how to they get the Galaxy to show in iTunes to allow users to manage it?

Assange's Ecuador asylum bid has violated £200k UK bail, say cops

jai

@Zombie Womble Re: breach of bail conditions?

I think the penalty of rape charges in Sweeden is not quite the same as the penalty of blasphemy in Iran. It's a bit much to say the two are the same isn't it?

Yes, innocent until proven guilty, I totally agree. But the whole point is that you have to fight allegations, not run away from them. And when his first attempt to run away failed, avoiding extradition from the UK, he's now run away from that too by seeking asylum. These are not the actions of a man who believes himself to be innocent. His own actions are proving him guilty.

jai

breach of bail conditions?

so if he's violated his bail conditions, that means the £200k isn't returned? And presumably he gets locked up until he's extradited then?

So all these people are gonna loose the money they gave him?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/wikileaks/9343739/Julian-Assange-celebrities-could-lose-thousands-from-WikiLeaks-founders-bail-breach.html

Serves them right, really. If the charges were just relating to the wikileaks stuff, then fair enough. But helping someone try and avoid these allegation of rape and molestation makes you almost complicit in the acts he's accused of. And judging from his concerted efforts to avoid the allegations, seems likely he believes himself guilty of them.

Sony slams Nintendo Wii U functionality

jai

Not sure that the Vita is going to be as amazing as they make out - it has the potential, but I suspect they'll fail to deliver the key killer features that'll make it an invaluable piece of your day, or they'll take ages to do it.

That said, they're right about the Wii U controller. It's far too big and clumsy and it's going to be the only device in the world that isn't multi-touch enabled.

But damnit, i still want to play Lego Undercover....

Microsoft takes on tablets with keyboard-equipped Surface

jai

Deja Zune?

Still, at least they've thought outside the box. This is not so much a tablet, then, as a ultra book with detachable keyboard? It's a good idea, but you're not going to be able to type on that keyboard on the train unless you're in the posh carriages with the tables.

ethernet

I've had my 11" since it's release in 2010 and i can tell you exactly how many times i've needed to plug an ethernet cable into it - that number is one less than the times i've wished to do so, which was once when it would have saved me walking from the lounge to the other room to use my iMac to check the network.

Sure i can see that you might prefer an ethernet connection if using it in an office every day for work, but then in that case, you surely should be using a MacBookPro instead.

Apple 13in MacBook Pro to fall into line this autumn

jai

price point

the price of the 15" mbpwrd is high, but you can kinda justify it to yourself (if not to the missus, but then she's unlikely to spot that it's a new laptop if you hide the boxes).

but for a 13" machine, the price is going to have to be a lot closer to the current 13" price point. Will the cost of the screens really come down enough for that to happen by October? That seems a little soon to me.

And does this suggest that perhaps there might also be a 17" mbpwrd next year with the pro desktops get their refresh?

Supreme Court dismisses Assange bid to reopen extradition case

sought for questioning?

He's wanted in Sweeden for questioning only?

Surely no one puts this much effort into avoiding questioning unless they're really blatantly guilty of the rape and harassment charges and they know full well they don't stand a chance once the trial begins.

I'd say his efforts to avoid cooperating with the authorities so far should be more than enough to demonstrate his guilt and convict him of the crime. Let him hang!

Apple's Retina Macs: A little too elite?

jai

this can't be the problem that you make it out to be

use an external drive. thunderbolt offers enough speed to be very nearly as good as an internal drive, surely.

also, if editing video is that important, surely you're already doing it on a desktop MacPro, or you're using an old-style MacBook Pro with an external large screen. No one is doing this quality video editing on the train on the way the work are they??

Bye, bye Apple. Now Facebook's the global app kingmaker

jai

but, are they not popular, because they are good?

so good&popular sustains good&popular then.

whereas goodBUTunknown apps have a hard time becoming popular.

But this is the way of all things. When you used to buy things from shops on the street (back in the dark ages) the same true, no? popular products would get prime placement in the shop and the rest of the products are hidden away on the shelves.
