Yay for iOS 6.1, grey Wi-Fi iPhone bug is fix- AWW, SNAP

jai

Re: That really is a massive fail

but is it? is it REALLY?

Anna states that "One thread has 2,700 replies"

We'll be generous and allow that every reply is from a seperate affected person, no one posted more than once to comment on whether or not they had any success with different suggestions.

During the last quarter (i.e. since iOS6 has been preinstalled on all new iPhones) Apple sold 47.8 million iPhones

[citation]http://thenextweb.com/apple/2013/01/23/tim-cook-apple-has-sold-over-500m-ios-devices-at-a-rate-of-10-per-second-in-q1-2013[/citation]

So a quick bit of maths shows that at most only 0.005649% of iPhone iOS6 users are impacted by this and are so upset by it that they've found their to the Apple website forum to complain about it.

That's not really a massive fail, it's a 0.005649% of a fail, really.

Re: Ughhh

@jb99

are you complaining about the time travelling aspect of the reboot? because, i seem to recall there was a TOS film where they came back to the 1980s and stole some fish, wasn't there?

also, you know that Abrams just directed it. he didn't write the script. if you have such a problem with the plot of the film then you should take that up with Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman

Words of wisdom from Swiss Toni

Providing fast access to the internet is very much like making love to a beautiful woman...

First, you've gotta get the lie of the land, map out the potential hot spots and make a mental note to pay them special attention later on. Then, you get your hardware out and make connection with the right sockets, and test everything is flowing in the right directions Once everything seems to be working fine, you open the doors and charge the man on the street a monthly fee to come and have a go.

Wad of BlackBerry OS 10 pics 'leaks' from RIM's inner circle

jai

print to go?

does it let you view all these different documents then?

because, i suspect for most people, my printer is nearer to my computer than it is to my phone. even at work the effort required to print a document directly from my computer is far less than emailing it to my phone and then printing it from there.

but i can see where it would be useful if the blackberry would appear on the network as a printer device. and then you could print anything to it, and it'd store the "printed" item so that you can view it later while at the airport, or hotel check-in desk or something. kinda like the Passbook idea on iOS except they haven't made it too easy to set up your own passbook items in iOS. If PrintToGo works like that, it'd be very useful.

iPhone hangs on in US, Japan, but EVERYONE ELSE bought an Android

Re: OI! Random Fanboi!

@CharlieClark

i wasn't suggesting this was a problem for an existing Android user, i'm talking about switching from non-Android OS to Android.

i'm sure calendar, pictures, software, etc are painlessly sync'd for you, when you already have an Android device. My point is, i'm already within the Apple walled garden and happy with it, i've spent time and money over the past 5 years setting it all up and buying all the apps i want. all my home devices are Apple.

My point to El Presidente was that, if i suddenly switched to an HTC, it'd be a massive PITA to have to do all that over again because i have no existing Android apps or configuration. So, if he presents me with the option of replacing my iPhone 5 with either an HTC or an iPhone5s, OF COURSE i'm going to choose the iPhone5s because i'd be up and running in seconds. If i were to switch OS, it's gonna take time before i get the phone up to a comparable state as my current phone.

Re: Apple and Android email problems?

PEBKAC?

jai

Re: OI! Random Fanboi!

iPhone 5s please

because, when i bring it home and unwrap it, all i need to do is punch in my icloud.com account name and password, and it'll sync up all my music, apps, ringtones, videos, podcasts, pictures, contacts, reminders, alarms, email accounts, safari bookmarks, etc, etc

if i get a android device, i'll have to set up most of that from scratch and buy all the apps all over again. and then have to find out how to get it to sync with all my media in iTunes

thnx - when can you deliver the 5s?

jai

UK stats

Some more detail that Anna left out, presumably to allow her to spin this story in her own way:

Samsung has held onto the number one spot in Britain, claiming 35% of smartphone sales, although Apple is now biting at its heels with 32%

So that's Samsung and Apple taking up 67% of the UK market.

Just over 6% belongs to Nokia, so that's a remaining 27% that's split up amongst all the other Android manufacturers.

Re: meh

First, If you are spending 40k on a car then you cannot buy the BMW it's costs more you see.

First, if I'm splashing 40k on a brand new car, then I almost certainly have enough cash around to be able to stretch it to 45k. If 40k is all I've got to spare in the bank, then I'm not spending all of it on a new car. At the most, I'd buy a second hand car for much less to leave a few k in the bank for emergencies like the central heating packing up in the middle of Snow Week.

jai

meh

if i'm spending 40k on a car, i'd rather spend the extra 5k and get a beamer.

but in fact, i'd rather get the car 3 years later after it's depreciated a bit, and then i guess the cost difference between the two will be greater as i imagine the Infiniti will depreciate much faster than the beamer will.

RIM's Heins beams: BB10 must walk the walk before we talk the talk

jai

Re: Scorched device policy...?

but can RIM actually afford to spend time and money on R&D of new Playbook hardware? they're best served focusing on the new phones and if those save the company, then maybe, maybe, they can return to the Playbook and try and put out hardware that appeals to more than a tiny proportion of the world. Also, margins on tablets at the price they'd have to pitch a new Playbook at are too small to be of use to RIM at this moment. So a scorched device policy would only result in even LESS people using Playbooks than there is currently.

But the phone will be different and they'll want to keep people buying new phones so that they can keep a healthy income stream.

The first new RIMs are likely to be successful, there's plenty of people that would like to try them, or are still using their old BBs and are dying for something modern. But it's getting people to keep on buying the hardware for the rest of the year and next year that might be tricky. And to encourage that, it's not inconceivable that some features of the OS upgrades will... encourage... a hardware upgrade as well.

This week's BBC MELTDOWN: Savile puppet haunts kids' TV

jai

setting a worrying precedent?

yes, it is perhaps poor taste, in light of the recent findings, but it's an episode made over 10 years ago. it's a tv show, aimed a small kids who, even 10 years ago, wouldn't have known who Jimmy Savile was, so at the time it could have only have been intended for the benefit of the parents watching the show.

what's next? do we need a Records of Department to eradicate any mention of Jimmy Savile from any tv show ever? should we have a Black List maintained to ensure Gary Glitter is never ever mentioned? or shall we be content which just giving such items an Emotional Content rating and leave it at that?

I doubt the culture is capable of change.

This happens over and over again and each time, there's outrage and shock and horror for a short while, and then they get distracted by something else and forget about it until the next atrocity is committed.

America, as a culture, just seems to accept that the cost of having their lax gun laws is that every now and again, a school full of kids or teenagers has to be wiped out. And the powers that be in America seem to be perfectly happy with that concept.

it is informative for opinions

but you're ignoring a vast array of other contributing factors.

if all the phones had the same features and cost the same price and were on the same networks, then, yes, you could say that more people prefer Android. But you need to know the numbers for a statement like that. If 90% of the Android devices sold are sub £200 phones or provided free on contract, then you're statement should be "more people with limited or no disposable income prefer the Android OS"

you can only make sweeping generalisations if all the items you are comparing are on the same level

Time has already run out for smart watches

jai

Watches are already on the decline

seen as an extension of the user’s personality

this is funny - the majority of the people i know stopped wearing watches over the past 10 years or so. these days, with a decent phone in your pocket, there's no need.

In fact, the only reason i wear a watch now is because it's a 6gen iPod Nano and i listen to podcasts on it.

Yes, the big expensive shiny shiny watches are seen more as jewellery and a reflection of the wearer, but I can see smart watches unlocking the market of people who stopped wearing watches because they've no need of a time telling device when their phone will do that, and instead people who want a lightweight, convenient interface to the phone in their pocket, of which time telling is just a minor, mostly unused function... in the same way that the phone function of a smart phone is likely it's least used feature.

Re: downloads

For sure, it's not great on a 30mb or 50mb connection either. But surely 1mb connections are the minority of gamers these days, so for you there's still the physical product, which costs twice the price of the digital download. So you either pay more, and play as soon as you get home from shops or amazon deliver it, or you buy it digitally and leave it downloading in the background for several days.

At the moment, you can get Hitman for 18 quid in the supermarket (and probably later cash it in at Game for $5+) for pay £44 for a digital download. That doesn't make any economical sense to me at all.

jai

Re: Santa

Could mean that pre-next-gen titles such as GTA5 will be on 1 BR instead of swapping between several DVDs.

You should play MGS4 - there's a rahter funny bit in it that harkens back to the disc swapping in MGS1 on the PSX.

jai

downloads

I don't know why there aren't more games available as direct downloads. Surely this will be addressed with the next gens.

I know the prices are currently prohibitive, which explains why people aren't downloading them, but surely it makes sense to the game developers and publishers to try to sell the games direct via digital download? Especially on consoles where it should be easy to lock the download to the users account, negating piracy fears.

Then all they need to do is drop the price. At the moment it is greedy, charging full RRP for a digital version when the digital version has none of the associated costs on a physical product. AND the user can't then sell on the game to the 2nd-hand market, which is a primary problem for the games publishers as they only get the money from the first sale and see nothing from all the subsequent 2nd-hand sales. If they dropped the price of the digital versions to nearer the 2nd-hand market prices, they'd get their share of all those sales and kill the 2nd-hand market at the same time.

and they don't even have to get their hands on it. they just need to brush past you close enough to leech all your NFC-available data (credit cards, address book, contents of fridge) without you even noticing.

jai

trying desperately to find a use for NFC

This all sounds a bit desperate to me. They've got this tech, it's great, but people aren't using it enough, so they're desperately trying to find more uses for it.

Like the fridge idea:

while a phone tapped against the fridge can present recipe suggestions based on what's in the appliance

but how does the fridge know what is inside it?

LG reckons barcode-reading software on a smartphone

So... why the need for any NFC in the fridge? if i've scanned the barcodes via my phone, then my phone knows what's in the fridge and can suggest recipes without needing to go anywhere near the kitchen. and when none of them appeal (beer + eggs + cadbury's cream eggs is a challenge even for Heston Blumenthal) then i'll just order from Dominos via the phone instead. don't need to leave the sofa at all until the doorbell rings, and more importantly, never needed to make use of NFC at all.

Devs: 'Pirates are flogging OUR stuff on BlackBerry's App World'

jai

Re: Why aren't they doing it themselves?

As evidenced by this article, not all Android apps run smoothly on BB. So why bother with having to support the handful of BB users? To adequately support it, you'd need to buy the hardware and divert time and resources away from your support of the Android platform. I suspect most devs just aren't willing to take the chance until there's proof that the majority of RIM10 users aren't other developers (and pirates it would seem).

Bendy screens are the future, screams maker of bendy screens

one issue with the AC's advise too - ignoring that this is an old, underspecced work pc which is tightly locked down preventing the possibility of installing an alternative web browser, let alone a new OS - if i did switch to his preferred OS, i'd need to look for a new job, as we run a lot of proprietary software, written many years ago, no doubt highly inefficient and the main reason for the poor performance, which may or may not run under emulation in something like wine but regardless, there is neither the budget nor resources to fully regression test and prove that. which is why we're still running everything under WinXP and only recently purchased servers run anything as new as WinServer2008!

the other issue is, i am, to use the parlance of someone posting above, a mac jerk, so if i was going to be switching OS's here at work, it wouldn't be in the direction of the penguin-botherers.

jai

Not convinced.

I currently have... 21 windows open on this PC, one of those is Firefox with a dozen tabs as well. And it's a fairly light day today at work and I've been quite focused in the things I'm working on. Some days there's far more than that and the pc struggles to handle it.

I can't see how having 50 paper screens scattered over my desk is going to be an improvement. I'll have to tidy them up and stack them on top of each other - which'll copy the data between them and screw everything right up!

I think there's probably a cool use case for bendy screens like this, but i don't think they've identified it yet.

Buying a petabyte of storage for YOURSELF? First, you'll need a fridge

jai

Does it really need all that much stuff?

First, you'll need a fridge. Plus a few hundred thousand quid, a reinforced floor

You can get 20tb with one of these:

http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?id=10607

So you'd only need somewhere to store 50 of those - and $109,950 to buy them.

Yes, sure, this probably isn't the ideal enterprise solution, but when talking about personal use, if you decided you absolutely had to have a petabyte of data, and you have a spare room or basement space, you could do it. AND if you set it up in your basement, you'd probably never need to heat your house :)
