So a quick bit of maths shows that at most only 0.005649% of iPhone iOS6 users are impacted by this and are so upset by it that they've found their to the Apple website forum to complain about it.

That's not really a massive fail, it's a 0.005649% of a fail, really.

are you complaining about the time travelling aspect of the reboot? because, i seem to recall there was a TOS film where they came back to the 1980s and stole some fish, wasn't there?

also, you know that Abrams just directed it. he didn't write the script. if you have such a problem with the plot of the film then you should take that up with Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman

i wasn't suggesting this was a problem for an existing Android user, i'm talking about switching from non-Android OS to Android.

i'm sure calendar, pictures, software, etc are painlessly sync'd for you, when you already have an Android device. My point is, i'm already within the Apple walled garden and happy with it, i've spent time and money over the past 5 years setting it all up and buying all the apps i want. all my home devices are Apple.

My point to El Presidente was that, if i suddenly switched to an HTC, it'd be a massive PITA to have to do all that over again because i have no existing Android apps or configuration. So, if he presents me with the option of replacing my iPhone 5 with either an HTC or an iPhone5s, OF COURSE i'm going to choose the iPhone5s because i'd be up and running in seconds. If i were to switch OS, it's gonna take time before i get the phone up to a comparable state as my current phone.

First, If you are spending 40k on a car then you cannot buy the BMW it's costs more you see.

First, if I'm splashing 40k on a brand new car, then I almost certainly have enough cash around to be able to stretch it to 45k. If 40k is all I've got to spare in the bank, then I'm not spending all of it on a new car. At the most, I'd buy a second hand car for much less to leave a few k in the bank for emergencies like the central heating packing up in the middle of Snow Week.

but can RIM actually afford to spend time and money on R&D of new Playbook hardware? they're best served focusing on the new phones and if those save the company, then maybe, maybe, they can return to the Playbook and try and put out hardware that appeals to more than a tiny proportion of the world. Also, margins on tablets at the price they'd have to pitch a new Playbook at are too small to be of use to RIM at this moment. So a scorched device policy would only result in even LESS people using Playbooks than there is currently.

But the phone will be different and they'll want to keep people buying new phones so that they can keep a healthy income stream.

The first new RIMs are likely to be successful, there's plenty of people that would like to try them, or are still using their old BBs and are dying for something modern. But it's getting people to keep on buying the hardware for the rest of the year and next year that might be tricky. And to encourage that, it's not inconceivable that some features of the OS upgrades will... encourage... a hardware upgrade as well.

I doubt the culture is capable of change.

This happens over and over again and each time, there's outrage and shock and horror for a short while, and then they get distracted by something else and forget about it until the next atrocity is committed.

America, as a culture, just seems to accept that the cost of having their lax gun laws is that every now and again, a school full of kids or teenagers has to be wiped out. And the powers that be in America seem to be perfectly happy with that concept.

but you're ignoring a vast array of other contributing factors.

if all the phones had the same features and cost the same price and were on the same networks, then, yes, you could say that more people prefer Android. But you need to know the numbers for a statement like that. If 90% of the Android devices sold are sub £200 phones or provided free on contract, then you're statement should be "more people with limited or no disposable income prefer the Android OS"

you can only make sweeping generalisations if all the items you are comparing are on the same level

For sure, it's not great on a 30mb or 50mb connection either. But surely 1mb connections are the minority of gamers these days, so for you there's still the physical product, which costs twice the price of the digital download. So you either pay more, and play as soon as you get home from shops or amazon deliver it, or you buy it digitally and leave it downloading in the background for several days.

At the moment, you can get Hitman for 18 quid in the supermarket (and probably later cash it in at Game for $5+) for pay £44 for a digital download. That doesn't make any economical sense to me at all.

and they don't even have to get their hands on it. they just need to brush past you close enough to leech all your NFC-available data (credit cards, address book, contents of fridge) without you even noticing.

As evidenced by this article, not all Android apps run smoothly on BB. So why bother with having to support the handful of BB users? To adequately support it, you'd need to buy the hardware and divert time and resources away from your support of the Android platform. I suspect most devs just aren't willing to take the chance until there's proof that the majority of RIM10 users aren't other developers (and pirates it would seem).

Console gamers would be the ideal market for this, 'cept they'll dislike it because it's a PC gaming rig at heart.

While I'm sure lots of people will sign up for more info, I wonder exactly how many will translate into real sales.

one issue with the AC's advise too - ignoring that this is an old, underspecced work pc which is tightly locked down preventing the possibility of installing an alternative web browser, let alone a new OS - if i did switch to his preferred OS, i'd need to look for a new job, as we run a lot of proprietary software, written many years ago, no doubt highly inefficient and the main reason for the poor performance, which may or may not run under emulation in something like wine but regardless, there is neither the budget nor resources to fully regression test and prove that. which is why we're still running everything under WinXP and only recently purchased servers run anything as new as WinServer2008!

the other issue is, i am, to use the parlance of someone posting above, a mac jerk, so if i was going to be switching OS's here at work, it wouldn't be in the direction of the penguin-botherers.

yes, because Samsung, Google, Microsoft, and any of the other firms who's court cases have been reported here haven't tried to appeal any of the rulings that went against them, did they? Samsung ponied up that $1 billion fine super quick, didn't they?
