if the specs are similar, and the chipset is very similar, presumably this will make it very easy for developers to write games for both systems? so perhaps no longer any need for a title to be on one device and not another perhaps?

Sony promises PC-based PlayStation 4 for Christmas
Re: Sony have dropped the ball
Thing is, when Apple show off their new shiny shiny, it's generally either available to pre-order (for delivery within the month) immediately after the show is over, or it's in their shops at the end of the week.
Sony have at least 6 months before putting the PS4 in the shops. If they show off the design now, there's plenty of time for Microsoft to copy and improve on any particularly good aspects of it.
And it's not like they have any competition at the moment - you can't go an order/pre-order a competitor's next-gen console today because you didn't get to see what the PS4 will look like.
So they can wait - If Microsoft are going to show the next Xbox at E3, then Sony can also surprise everyone at the same time by showing the PS4. And it'll be the PS4 that gets all the headlines, precisely because they've created all the hype now by not showing it.
Re: Price...
It was far too expensive for a games console, perhaps yes, but for many it was also the cheapesst blu-ray player at the time, so actually made economical sense to get one.
Or at least, that's how I rationalised spending that much money to myself.
Then again, I'm not sure the same laws apply. In a world where we're buying tablets for 500 quid just to surf the web and play "small" games, why would it seem daft to expect people to pay up a lot more for a next gen console that again is not just a games machine but also a full media centre for your living room?
I wouldn't be surprised to see both the PS4 and the next Xbox with (at least initially) asking prices similar to the expensive tablets.
Apple FINALLY fills gaping Java hole that pwned its own devs
How would you know your machine was part of a botnet these days?
install something like LittleSnitch. That'll alert you to anything new that starts communicating from your machine to the outside world.
It's a pain for the first week or so, as you get alerted to everything, and have to acknowledge the ones you're okay with and investigate the ones you're suspicious of. But after you've got it bedded in, then you know that any alert that comes up which you didn't do anything unusual to initiate is likely malware trying to dial home, and so you can kill it.
perhaps not the best idea
except, for some of us, we have to run Java to do our jobs. and if we don't, then we don't get paid, so can't pay the rent and so are thus homeless and starving to death.
so, on balance, i'd say installing Java to remove the malware was a good idea, and at the same time, following the advice in this article to be aware if someone does manage to get malware on my machine:

Boffins use DVD burner to scale graphene supercapacitors
at last a use for it!
i've got one of these dvd writers. seemed like such an awesome idea - burn a disc, and at the same time, burn the label to tell you what's on it!
sadly, the reality wasn't as good as i'd imagined it would be, and while the labels were readable, you mostly had to be in the right light holding it at the right angle. so i think i only used the Lightscribe part perhaps 3 times, it's been used as a regular dvd drive ever since.
but now! now at least i can feel that it wasn't completely wasted money! now i have something useful. if i can just get someone to employ me to make them supercapacitors....
Rid yourself of Adobe: New Firefox 19.0 gets JAVASCRIPT PDF viewer
Re: I've been trying it.
Apple's desktops have long since had native PDF ability. Since 10.2 i think.
Because of this, not only can you view pdf files with just the system tools, but also makes it very easy for any app to render a pdf doc - hence Safari has been displaying PDFs from the web for years without needing to install a plugin. A nice side effect is that because it's part of the system, any application on a Mac that uses the default Print dialog should be able to print directly to a PDF document instead of a printer.
So i assume the same Quartz code that is baked into OS X was also included in iOS from the start as well.
Clarkson: 'I WILL find and KILL the spammers who hacked me'
The headline has this text 'I WILL find and KILL the spammers who hacked me' in quotes.
I thought quotes were used when, you know, quoting what someone said. Not for when you're paraphrasing and using your own emphasis on the word KILL. And failing to include the quote from the movie which puts a more humorous angle on the rest of the quote.
Apple and world HACKED by Facebook plunderers
Here's an article that describes where to look on your mac to see if it's got the malware. Apparently the site that was hacked to distribute the malware was a "mobile developers website"
They're suggesting that the idea was to allow them to inject malicious code into the code being developed for mobiles, rather than trying to hack mobiles directly.

Bill Gates: Windows Phone strategy was 'a mistake'
Re: Gates quote
Totally agree - i think he's just trying to find something to say to give the end of the piece a positive spin.
Windows 8 - too early to call, but if it's the "key to the future" then it hasn't had the greatest of starts.
Surface - again, doesn't seem to have done anywhere near as well as they would have liked it to, but need more time to tell i guess
Bing - "people have seen is a better search product" i dunno about that. i switched from Google to Bing after all the UK tax issue, but i'm going to be switching back again because Bing just isn't as good, the top results often aren't the ones i'm trying to find.
XBox - while yes, it's been a successful product, it's at the end of it's life and hasn't really done anything in the last year, has it? Everyone is looking towards the next XBox, not the old one.
iPad? Pah. Behold the EYEPAD, patented by Sony for the 'PS4'

Android? Like Marvin the robot? Samsung eclipses Google OS - Gartner
I dunno, I'd imagine Google exec's aren't entirely happy about this news.
What happens if Samsung suddenly decide to switch their devices over to Bada instead?
If the general public are buying Samsung's because they're Samsung's and not because they are Androids, then there's the risk that Google will lose that install base.
This gives Samsung a very strong hand against Google, should they ever wish to use it.

Micron glues DDR4 RAM to flash, animates the 256GB franken-DIMM
>Holding big databases in memory
But surely the appeal of having a big database in memory is that you'd get memory speeds.
From the way I read the article, this would allow you to load the big database into memory, but you'd still be caching from the slower flash chips and so you'd still have performance not much better than holding the big database on a flash hdd and caching through your standard memory, no?

Boffins find 17,425,170-digit prime number
So basically there is no practical use for this discovery
depends, the number of calculations for this kind of thing are huge. so i suspect, the scientific drive to find these number does, in part, fund the research into making faster and faster computer systems. and eventually, that research filters down into the graphics cards that allow us to play such great looking games on our PCs and watching stunning CG fx in movies.
an i7 ?
When i was a young'un in the 80s my pa was working for Cray at the time they found the 32nd Mersenne prime.
That was a Cray 2 - the liquid cooled the size of a large fridge.
And now they're finding these exponentially larger numbers on core 2 duos and i7's like we have in our desktop machines.... which we use for reading email and playing farmville????
NASA deep space probe sends back video of 'Comet of the Century'
Re: poor FX
Can NASA make it look better? Yes, for barrels and barrels of money
while my original comment was made somewhat tongue in cheek, what i meant was, couldn't they run the video through a filter to remove all the noise and speckles? that wouldn't cost barrels and barrels of money, i'm sure something as simple and free as iMovie can both remove camera shake and despeckle the video image.
it's like they left all that in, to purposely make it look like it was a poor video sent from the middle of space.
poor FX
that looks like a scene from the worst of cheap B-Movies from the 40s!!!!
surely NASA can do better than that, at least some kind of post-processing to clear up the noise on the images.
Or are they afraid that presenting a too-clean image will incite everyone to claim it's as fake as the moon landings?

my favourite tea
best tea i've ever had is at my grandparent's house (this might be biased slightly by childhood memories of cups of tea and my Nanna's home made chocolate cake or lemon cake etc, but regardless).
i recently found out that they buy loose tea, English Breakfast and Earl Grey. And then, in an ancient square tin, my grandfather blends the two together, one part Earl Grey to 3 parts English Breakfast.
they live miles away, and after the long drive to see them, that cuppa tea is the most curative and restorative drink ever (again, an opinion perhaps influenced because of it's close association in my mind with my nanna's home baking).

Death Star UK
One interesting side effect of the Death Star kickstarter is that the guy raising it is from Leicester. This means that, should he raise the required money of the stretch goal to actually build it, it'll be a UK production, and so under our control and not under that of the sceptics.
Whether or not that makes them more or less likely to view the Earth as an Alderaan substitute depends, i guess, on your nationality.
