Microsoft encrypts explanation of borked Windows 10 encryption

Mikel

One way encryption

It's so encrypted that it can't be decrypted by anything - even the owner.

A likely problem is that the Beast hasn't worked out a back door API deal with the self encrypting drive makers yet, and so can't uphold their commitments to various TLAs to keep that back door open. People might start encrypting stuff on their PCs that Microsoft can't grant access to recover.

Booming Ballmer bellows 'bulls**t' over Microsoft's cloud revenue run rate

Mikel

Re: Quite right too...

WTF? How did that happen?

Translation: Bill finally got the last of his eggs out and it's time to kill the golden goose before it does any more harm.

A lot of people don't understand that this was his job: not to dominate technology or move Microsoft forward. It was to hold the Beast still while Bill converted his paper wealth into real money.

Google snoops on kids via Chromebooks, claims EFF in FTC filing

Mikel

Oh the horror

Google might actually also help children find things relevant to their interests! To arms! Unleash the hounds! Contact your local PTA and demand that they have a meeting about possibly forming a committee to mull sending a letter to somebody someday.

inserting the corruption and inefficiency of government into charit

Most charity appears to do more harm than good, when the donations do anything at all. Remember Haiti earthquake relief? Introduced endemic cholera to the island, little benefit for the people. The Red Cross's half billion $ accomplished essentially nothing. "Much of the money never reached people in need."

It is starting to look like charity organizations are just a scam.

As for the girl's inheritance, Zuck likely has 60 years left in him. Disregarding the extraction of real money out of paper wealth and the slings and arrows of that much outrageous fortune, she'll have the benefit of the whole lot for as long as it is likely to be important to her.

Who owns space? Looking at the US asteroid-mining act

Mikel

Re: This is not a problem for asteroids

Ceres is an asteroid. It is 1000km diameter, mostly water by volume, and completely covered in high grade ore.

Mikel

Re: Who owns space?

Shocker: everything on Earth is also "in space".

Mikel

Earth

The Earth is also the province of all mankind. The rule on Earth is the same as in space: If you can take it, it's yours for as long as you can hold it.

Android on Windows is disruptive because neither Microsoft nor Google can stop it

Mikel

No worries

El Reg seems to have missed that this week Intel has a new top dog for client - PC, mobile, IoT and Systems Architecture. Venkata Renduchintala was poached from Qualcomm, where they definitely have heard of Android. I would not worry about Intel's progress on Android from this point.

Why Microsoft yanked its latest Windows 10 update download: It hijacked privacy settings

Mikel

Again,

There are some who would defend a Windows update causing the PC to spontaneously combust. Where the motivation to do so comes from is debatable (money? devotion?) but is certainly not motivated by an enlightened and compassionate concern for your best interests.

@Donkey Molestor X

What happened to the first nine?

The railgun idea is fun, but the only place in the solar system that it works for manned flight is Ceres. You need near vacuum, low gravity, and a thousand kilometers of running room if you aren't going to turn your astronauts into pink goo. And we shall have to wait for fusion power as well, as that is a lot of juice

Intel's response

In the last hours Intel has appointed Qualcomm alum and their former nemesis, Venkata Renduchintala as president of their client, IoT and Systems Architecture Group. So IoT is getting a boss who has heard of Linux. And client too.

Hope is not dead. Intel may once again become a go-to provider of chips for people who want to be in control of what their stuff does.

Mikel

Great. Move the target to where the arrow hit. Bullseye! Bonuses all 'round!

Can't get any love from Redmond to bootstrap their IoT ambitions

Should have never expected any. Nor wanted any.

Intel is desperate to be in this game and it's a Linux game. So what do the business wizards do? Make the engineers shove Windows on. This is why we are falling in love with ARM, and now MIPS again.

Windows 10 pilot rollouts will surge in early 2016, says Gartner

Mikel

While supplies last

Like the corner furniture store that has been holding a "going out of business inventory clearance sale" for the last 20 years, this limited time offer is just marketing fantasy to get people to take action. As the end approaches it will be extended, then quietly eliminated in a magnanimous gesture of goodwill. And then people will be paid to come here and laud the generosity, elevating it with comparisons to Jonas Salk and Norman Borlaug.

Microsoft shelves 'suicidal' Android-on-Windows plan

Mikel

Tell me if you heard this one

Microsoft have untold billions and the world's brightest minds, a number one brand and all the retail relationships in the world to put this over. A billion dollars in marketing just for the launch. Miley Cyrus free concerts, Snoop, all the characters on your favorite movies and shows use it. Numerous hardware partners are slavering at the prospect of that Windows Phone Lucre. With Universal Apps every desktop developer becomes a Windows Phone developer automagically, and the new porting tools make Android and iOS developers Windows Phone developers whether they want to be or not - for a clean sweep of all the developers in the world except those Perl perverts. And webapps too, with the world's finest browser and app wrappers for every major site, bring all the world's technology to your phone. Nobody else has Cortana and that's like having an AI love slave at your beck and call. It's Powered By BING! Everybody loves Bing!

Why only a fool would bet against that much synergy.

Re: Pity

>But then, Windows is the standard, and it would be a very bold PC maker that would go ahead and dump Windows and start bringing out a line of computers running the new OS/2 Android - and expect the software industry to start selling applications for it. Bold to the point of insanity.
