Did you know? The FBI investigated Gamergate. Now you can read the agents' thrilling dossier

Truckle The Uncivil - there are ways of joining a debate without coming across as a flinchingly defensive, closeted rapist.

"Your post in itself is abuse. Not violent abuse, not individual abuse but abuse of men as a class. The very definition of prejudice and bigotry.", expressing attitudes like this is a great way for heterosexual males to limit their sexual horizons to "self-abuse".

Storage greybeard: DevOps, plagiarism and horrible wrongness

charles paul

If you enjoyed this ignorant article, then you are an ignoramus.

"

Fix Bad Stuff

Stop Bad Stuff happening

Do Good Stuff

Make Good Stuff easier to do

It turns out that my teams are already pretty much working in this way; some folks spend more time dealing with the Bad Stuff and some spend more time dealing with the Good Stuff."

StorageBod is obviously an insecure curmudgeon with, with providence and grace, will be shuffled out of the IT workforce hopefully sooner rather than later. Jokers like this are familiar to all devops consultants... nod nod nod, and let them go on with their spiel about how things are already running perfectly - it doesn't matter because the CTO already gave you carte blanche to remove their raison d'etre with 50 lines of python.

DevOps: The spotty faced yoof waiting to blossom

"I fail to see what specific relationship DevOps has with automation." Is the author being sarcastic, or just clueless?

Microsoft's cringey 'Hey bae <3' recruiter email translated by El Reg

charles paul

Oh man... the mistake Microsoft made is assuming that all of their interns would be cool... Who would be offended by an email like this? (aside from people who are offended by urban slang and getting drunk on Monday nights...)

Big turds for whoever shared this email.

Finally, someone has an intelligent comment about the range of shot.

Fallout: New Vegas

non-linear?

Is this game truly non-linear (like Fallout 1 or 2)? If not, I think I will pass... Fallout 3 turned to pure suck when it became apparent that the player character was being guide-railed towards completing some complicated "Final Quest".

Linear Polarization

The head tilting problem only comes into effect with passive systems using linear polarization. RealD, the system used on the silver-screen, uses circular polarization to get around this exact problem.

Paramount prepares to scale Dune

FAIL

1974 Dune

"""The first attempt to translate Dune to the big screen was in 1974, when a French consortium bought the rights. It planned a "10-hour feature adaptation", with the remarkable list of David Carradine, Geraldine Chaplin, Salvador Dali, Alain Delon, Mick Jagger, Gloria Swanson and Orson Welles linked to the project."""

How could you forget to mention HR Giger, Jean Giraud, Pink Floyd and Alejandro Jodorowsky? :)

Satellites crash over Siberia: Iridium bird destroyed

Thumb Down

NORAD should have known

Here's a game I wrote to calculate the approx time/location of the collision.

Source here: http://evil-wire.org/~epsas/collision.py

Plugging TLEs from last week still shows that the satellites would be uncomfortably close.

Projects like SOCRATES are supposed to find out about these "conjunctions" before they happen. Assuming that the Iridium satellite still had fuel, they must have had the time to move the satellite out of the Cosmos' orbit.

Israelis offer radical new rat-based urban renewal scheme

Thumb Down

Anybody who has lived in New Orleans knows...

That the rats don't use city streets, they get from place to place by the telephone and power lines.

Also, New Orleans is laid out strangely because a river bends it's way through it's center - also, there is a "grid"... it is just skewed to better match the contours of the river.

It looks like this book is for real (or a really really elaborate net-hoax).

MAN MADE OYSTERS

Oysters are so beautiful, it is a shame to throw away the shells after just one meal. Resavour the feeling of a silky succulent oyster slipping down your throat by using the shells as semen serving dishes.

Hotmail ran topless in 2000

In 2000, a client of mine had a cage between Hotmail and Hotmail's cooling fans. These cooling fans were large industrial HVAC units that blasted 50 degree air at 30 mph or so. Needless to say, we were in the wind-tunnel every time we had to work on our servers.

Why the tremendous HVAC? Well, the Hotmail engineers had torn all the covers off of their 2U servers to save heat.

It was a sight back in the day to see thousands of bare motherboards blinking in a cage...

Ballonets, BlauGas, Helium & Rigid Airships

The second picture seems to suggest that the rigid airframe of the Zeppelin will extend just around the diameter of the COSH torii?

Sans the need for ballonet & water/blaugas ballast, I am curious as to the cubic volume of cargo this Zep could transport.

What about the airframe & superstructure: Aluminum-Titanium Alloys? Maybe they have a huge oven in the works to bake carbon fiber segments for the airframe?
