You forgot the space between "GO" and "TO"...

"the security services have prevented hundreds if not thousands of terrorist attacks in the last couple of years and this is only down to the fact that they can spy on everyone and retain all the data they want."
That's nothing. I have a rock here that keeps away tigers!
It should lead to the introduction of a universal basic income - the Swiss are due to have a vote on it soon, and it would lead to large savings in admin costs as everyone would be eligible.
See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_income
Alternatively, wealth is concentrated to the 0.001% who own the robots, and everyone else gets put in camps or worse.

"Win 7 and 8 do not support some of the hardware, fingerprint scanner, wireless networking and bluetooth"
I'll bet that most recent Linux distros will support the majority of your hardware, though - take a LiveCD for a spin and find out. At least you'd be safe from zero-day exploits after next April.
My attic currently contains (among other things - in desperate need of a clearout):
1 x ZX81 (not working - might be the power supply)
1 x Amstrad CPC6128 (w/colour monitor) - worked last time I tried it (about 20 years ago)
1 x Mac IIsi & Imagewriter II (worked last time I tried it about 10 years ago)
1 x IBM N33SX (16 Mhz 386SX) laptop (pre-Thinkpad) - worked 8 years ago but backlight was dying
1 x Blueberry iMac (350 MHz PowerPC, 64Mb RAM) - still works (have run both MintPPC and MacOS 9.2.2 on it)
1 x Amiga 600 (bought at local dump^H^H^H^Hrecycling centre for £5) - worked last time I tried it 7 years ago
There's also a Compaq Contura 486SX colour laptop on permanent loan (as in, I don't expect to get it back) running Win95C (installed from floppies!).
I had a (broken) Issue 2 Spectrum, complete with box, manuals, cables, Horizons tape etc., but gave it away in the days before Ebay...still kicking myself...
I tend to recommend Bodhi, Peppermint (word processors can be installed from the Ubuntu repos, btw), and for really low-end, Crunchbang, AntiX or Slitaz.
Bitcoin mining is not really a profitable use for it - even dedicated GPUs aren't worth the effort.
As for Minecraft, a quick DuckDuckGo found this: http://www.wikihow.com/Play-Minecraft-in-Ubuntu
There are a number of low-resource Linux variants (of which Joli is/was one, based on Ubuntu originally IIRC).
If you really want a Chrome-like experience, there are the various "ChromiumOS" builds by Hexxeh: http://chromeos.hexxeh.net/
My personal preference is Bodhi, which offers a tablet-style interface if you want it. For a more XP-like interface, there's LXLE, Peppermint, Lubuntu or AntiX. Slitaz is very small and speedy for older netbooks, but with limited software repositories.
