Re: Darned tech!
First seen as one of the "AI koans" from the Jargon File:
"Tom Knight and the Lisp Machine
A novice was trying to fix a broken Lisp machine by turning the power off and on.
Knight, seeing what the student was doing, spoke sternly: “You cannot fix a machine by just power-cycling it with no understanding of what is going wrong.”
Knight turned the machine off and on.
The machine worked."

> Two iomega zip drives, one with an 80 pin IDE connection and one with a USB 1 connection. Should I dump the IDE model and keep just the USB one?
I've got a parallel-port and a USB version - they came in handy when tranferring data/installing software on an old IBM PS/2 Note N33sx laptop whose floppy drive was dodgy.
"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."

Re: Oh Gawd...
I digitised the entire intro from The Prisoner for use as the startup sound on my Mac IIsi at work in about 1992. It took up most of the hard drive, as I recall...
For the SE/30 I used occasionally at the time, I had HAL 9000 saying "I am completely operational and all my circuits are functioning perfectly".
Wot, no Trio?
"Da Da Da" is surely the grandaddy of all no-effort, piss-taking synth music:
BTW, my SMS alert is Majel Barrett saying "Incoming Message", my ringtone is the phone ring sound from the Matrix and my alarm is the theme from the Twilight Zone.
Now you can tell someone to literally go f--k themselves over the internet: Remote-control mock-cock patent dies

> If these agencies are denied the means to get evidence from communication channels then there is no chance of them carrying out their legal responsibilities.
Not our problem. Police work is only easy in a police state.
> One of the primary responsibilities of democratic government is to protect the people that put them in office. If a these governments cannot do this then what do we have?
Well, we could guarantee to "protect" everyone by locking everyone up in solitary confinement from birth - some compromises are required in a free society.
Re: Last time I checked Spain was in Europe...
> That reminds me of a reddit thread a while back (not the first) where a black British guy got into an argument with an American who was insisting that he (the black guy) was African-American.
Yes, that kind of thing shows up often on /r/ShitAmericansSay. I always say that my favourite African-American is Charlize Theron...

Notwithstanding the privacy implications, apparently the Linkys also have an unfortunate habit of catching fire:
