Vulture 2 autopilot reports for duty

M Gale

Re: Reprogramming

What have the MoD got to do with it?

Not sure, but this is the same person that suggested turning LOHAN into a conventional rocket. Uhm, while completely forgetting the "autopilot itself back to base" part of the mission.

I guess building missiles is okay, but sticking wings on them isn't.

Re: Pushrods!

I'm pretty sure an off the shelf Yagi is already available to connect directly to the transmitter.

I've heard there are some excellent parts for this available on the potato snack shelf of your nearest food emporium. I'm also told that it's impossible to stop, once you've popped.

M Gale

Re: Pushrods!

Also: If the Rx or your version of the APM has removable components

They're using a 2.4ghz setup. These things tend to hop around the band hunting for empty frequencies, which removes one of the other killers of 35Mhz gear: Interference on your chosen frequency (you also remove the loose-crystal risk for free).

Though personally I prefer Spektrum over Futaba for that stuff. Something about using two frequencies and having dual linked redundant receivers appeals to the geek in me.

M Gale

Re: Reprogramming

Then maybe you'll realize this isn't a toy and you are building a prototype cruise missile weapon.

And it should be banned, am I right?

Congratulations. Now law abiding people can't make automated toys. The sort of people interested in building explosive UAVs on the other hand, can continue to do so as they have been able to for years.

Re: Optional

I don't think playing FPS games with the controls arse-over-tit is unique to iThing users. It does seem popular amongst people who are stuck on consoles and have not yet found the awesomeness of the mouselook, though.

Maybe someone should do a study. I think you'll find a correlation between control arse-backward-ness and flight sim use. And, perhaps, spectacle rim thickness.

Got the CLOUD FEAR? Connected Data has a black 'n' blue cone to sell you

M Gale

Re: So it's not actually so-called "cloud"?

It's a hard drive with what looks like a file server and rsync in it. So yes, it's "cloud", just like renting out VMs to use up your spare cycles or giving people an API to use is also, apparently, "cloud".

Like get with the wave, man. Learn the lingo, dude. And all that other jazz.

Re: M Gale

*Coff* nothing to do with the Yahoo forums, and everything to do with "sadville", AKA Second Life, that the OP was going on about.

It's a shame the Lindens don't decentralise the thing and let people run their own sim servers. It has plenty of potential as a build-your-own-MMO engine, but it seems the damagement seems intent on wrecking it and making sure the only people left willing to splurge that much cash on a bit of virtual real-estate are rich furries and the occasional overly-optimistic business.

M Gale

Re: What! Is! This! Yahoo! Of! Which! You! Speak?!

Speaking of which, has the last one turned off the lights over there?

Oh, it's still going. But, at $1000 set-up fee and $300 a month to own a region, I don't know how long for.

You would think Linden Labs would FOSS the server software and have a certification process. Run your own damn sim on your own damn server, link it into the grid, the grid server can ping all the sims/regions and tag them with a quality level, and LL can cream the top off the Lindencash like they usually do. Turn that old PC on your DSL connection into a 16-person region, for example. Or pay Rackspace to run a full size affair. Unfortunately, it seems that sense is a rare commodity amongst Linden Labs.

That and new updates breaking deformations. Everything's going a bit Pete Tong, and people are looking at OpenSimulator, scratching their chins and thinking "hm, perhaps it's good enough".

Ultralight party balloons in WEEK-LONG marathon flight

M Gale

Re: Party balloons?

I've noticed foil balloons can stay up for a good while, myself.

I'm wondering how the probes managing to get up there without the not-too-stretchy balloons bursting though. Left the neck open so that excess pressure can leak out, perhaps?

all I had to do was root it and install Stickmount

Tell that to my mum. After she's finished slapping you for having such a dirty mouth, she'll still not have a clue what you just said.

If it requires breaking (or breaking into) the device, then it's not supported. Any more than installing Slackware on Surface RT is supported.

Windows 8.1 to freeze out small business apps

Re: control freaks..

once given the chance to really test the UI. had options between: "Works as good as W7" to "great".

I know this is only anecdotal, but the only person I've found who liked the Metro thing, was someone who had never, ever had a computer before. This was their first PC. A laptop if you must know. He asked me what I could possibly dislike about the phone interface that comes up when you hit the TIFKAM Windows button. No, no I hadn't walked in the room, saw the godawful squares and had a Pavlovian reaction, before you start on that. Just like yes, yes I really do pay for my software, despite having various Linux partitions dotted around the place and an extreme dislike of shitty DRM like Steam or WGA.

After bringing my own, six year old, crusty old AMD64 laptop around one time, and after a few "but can you do thi... oh, yes you can" comments, he had to concede that there is absolutely nothing he wants to do with his machine that I can't do better.

VMware's latest trick: Virtual gyroscopes and compasses

The utility has also been tweaked so Windows 8.1 can run as a VM in the happiest possible way, as can some recent Linuxes.

Pretty much. Like JDX above, I ain't no sysadmin. However, I've been CTRL+Cing and CTRL+Ving between Virtualbox instances and various guest/host combinations for a while now. So long as the guest extensions are installed, what's the problem?

(And Windows 8 is still a shitty guest)

I remember a friend telling me how awesome the BackOffice server he'd set up for his boss was. I told him to get that shit off the Internet now. He refused.

Within an hour, the server had been firewalled.

Microsoft's Nokia plan: WHACK APPLE AND GOOGLE

M Gale

Re: Good phones and good OS

that's the web and metro influence.

I only see this in a few places, and I regard this as either fawning fanboyism (what, Microsoft has fanboys? Stranger things have happened!) or a complete lack of ideas. Or possibly both.

M Gale

Re: RIP Nokia

Nokia will still exist, Microsoft is just buying the phone division.

So basically, they bought the only thing about Nokia that has any brand awareness whatsoever. That is, unless you're seriously contemplating buying a pair of Nokia wellies instead of your next smartphone. Whatever of Nokia is left might as well shut up shop now. Last person to leave, please turn out the lights.

Everybody saw this coming a mile off, apart from the Nokia execs it seems.

Myst: 20 years of point-and-click adventuring

M Gale

All I remember about Myst is that they used a whole bunch of pre-rendered video to make a game that could have otherwise fit onto a single floppy disk take up an entire CD ROM. Other than the FMV, it wasn't really much more advanced than Monkey Island, Sam & Max or Day of the Tentacle. It was a classic example of the "let's make it look good but play like on-rails shit" games that started coming out when CD ROMs were a new thing (well, new to the consumer market), beaten out for pure crapness only by the Simple Simon-type games such as Road Avenger.

The later games in the series, I'm not so sure about. They might have been better.

£165.09 for a Galaxy S3 on Envirofone. That's $255.81 at current exchange rates.

To get the exact same amount for an iPhone, it needs to be a 4S with 32GB. Apparently the 64GB model will not net you any extra money.

Don't forget ADAT machines. 8 track digital audio recording on a super-VHS cassette. A whole bunch cheaper than the specialist cassettes used for RDAT machines, and with more capability too.

Awesome stuff.

M Gale

Re: FM radio tuner cassette

You mean the cassette adapters that you can still buy for plugging iThings and MP3 players into old car stereos? They work quite simply, by having a play/record head pressed up against the device's play/record head and transferring the headphone signal to the amplifier in much the same way as a transformer works.

All the filtering in the world doesn't help when the grow op keeps popping the fuse of a local distrribution transformer.

If you're dragging that much juice out of the grid, you're either doing it on an industrial scale, or doing it wrong.

There's people out there running grow tents for their own personal, on less than 150 watts. Why have a 400w or 1000w High Pressure Sodium bulb + ballast combo (and associated heat) when a 100w or 200w cluster of CFL grow-lamps does the job? You can even switch between high-K veg lamps and low-K bud lamps, if you're not just using feminized autos. Even the ventilation fan you'll typically run through an £80-£90 variac at 80-100 volts or so (assuming a 230v supply) to keep the noise level down. All it needs to do is slowly cycle the air out of your tent and through the filter, and you use negative pressure to keep the stink where it belongs.

Google "autoflowering" versus "photoperiod" if you're wondering what I mean by "feminized autos". If you're on this site and don't know what a variac is... oh just google it. Also known as a variable transformer. Think Steampunk Dimmer Switch, only minus the awful hum that dimmers induce in a circuit.

Me? Well, I'm quite legally clean, otherwise I wouldn't dare make comments like these on a web site. I just happen to know a thing or two.

M Gale

Re: "manufacturing a controlled drug".

"Probably why they're doing it. Legalize on a trial basis and watch people go mad. Ban it again as dangerous because it was unregulated."

Legalize on a trial basis, watch the plan backfire as people fail to go mad and violent crime drops due to people being far too content to sit on the sofa munching pizza and cookies than go out, get leathered on cheap lager and start a riot.

The awesome thing about weed is it's not like you're going to accidentally brew methanol if you get it wrong. If it does get legalized more widely though, the thing to do is challenge the convention that "getting high on weed" == "smoking weed". The "smoking" part is the only dangerous bit, and it's entirely unnecessary.
