Nine year-old blamed for US school system hack

kasparator

You're all missing the point slightly

I'm one of the very few people with Blackboard admin accounts in our university. The biger problem is that (if I read the article correctly) tutor's account had administrative priviledges - their system role was that of an admin, which gives you practically unlimited rights on the system.

Ordinary users can't reset passwords for other Blackboard users, this can only be done by sysadmin or account holders themselves.

Though we've had our share of Blackboard trouble this specific problem lies with giving sysadmin rights to a numpty, could happen on any system.

Not necessarily a hacker

There was no hacking or cracking involved in the database leak - it wasn't even a security hole or a backdoor. All downloaded data was available on their web server, you could simply type in the URL for the next document and Bob's your uncle. Undocumented - yes, but doesn't exactly take a rocket scientist to figure that one out.

Nevertheless - good job, I doubt they could bring any charges that would stick. Some of the published data also reveals massive discrepancies in police salaries, so many cops would side with Neo.

'tis rubbish

I'm a Latvian which is like a Lithuanian, only better which instantly makes me an expert on the matter (any matter that is) and I can confidently say - bring on the Glaswegian accent. In fact - take every mouth-breathing vowel-dropping innit'ing moron and re-educate them by forcing them to watch Trainspotting until they can speak Glaswegian. Win/win.

UK banks 'not doing enough' on internet fraud

HSBC online security is a joke

All that a customer is asked for is their login ID, DoB and random digits from their numeric security code (which never changes). All it takes to capture is a keylogger on the system - it would be interesting to know just how much money it costs them annually?

IMHO the big banks could learn a lot from smaller banks in Eastern Europe which are much less complacent when it comes to dealing with fraud. I guess they can't afford to just swallow their losses as easily.

Barclays are using PIN devices: welcome to 21st century - Latvian banks have been using them for over five years. I can only hope one day HSBC wakes up and realises what time it is.

So there, she said it

Weird people, Americans. The said "millions of families" don't get horribly offended when the inbred jackasses shoot their own classmates, they're not shocked when their army inflicts democracy on other countries and when these same families use and discard most of world's irreplacable resources. But one mention of female genitalia, taken out of context and the end is nigh... Does it make them feel better about themselves, does it help them to feel like a superior nation that alone is responsible for preserving the morality in this world?

It's hard being perfect, I know - all these other imperfect people annoy you all the time.

Waste of time

I already spent too much time reading these comments. Now back to work, eating swans and cementing English countryside.

HSBC security still a joke

Just read this and out of curiosity tried logging into HSBC - it appears they have changed the text on login page, pretty sure it was shorter just a couple of days ago:

"Your security number is a 6-10 digit number, which you may already use to help identify yourself when calling us. Please don't use family phone numbers, birthdates, simple sequences, or repetitions, which are all relatively easy to guess. We never ask you to enter or tell us your security number in full."

Trouble is - it's still a joke. Using a DoB and a static NUMERIC security number that never changes as means of authentication? Which planet are you from, HSBC? Call me cynical but it lookes like it takes massive lawsuits/financial losses to get banks to change something.

Threats like this only expose the fact that many institutions that SHOULD know better still take a pee out of their customers.

UK's 'elitist' immigration rules billed for January 2008

Yeah, sure, it's all us, eastern Europeans...

...it's not your own local council types, Vicky Pollards & Co, innit?

Having studied in a UK uni I can safely say that the majority of people slacking off were local. I dare you to go and ask any lecturer on their opions on students from eastern Europe. Sure there are few odd slackers, and yes, being immigrant I'd say UK laws need tightening, but please, don't blame it all on migrants, that's just stupid. I pay all my taxes unlike some of the sweatpant wearing indigenous crowd.
